Miscellaneous Musings

Hello again, everyone, and Happy Leap Day 2020! It's not often that I have a chance to post new content on February 29, so I am grateful to be able to do so today. The last couple of days, I have benn running around physically, mentally, and in other respects, focusing on a wide variety of temporal and spiritual obligations. But I wanted to post again now to share some musings I have been having in the midst of all of it. First of all, let me say right out of the gate that what I share herein are no more and no less than my own thoughts, perspectives, and ideas based on the information I currently have available. And especially where matters relating to the Church are concerned, these thoughts that I offer are subject to either confirmation, denial, or correction through official channels. So the first thing that I wanted to share relates to temples. As some of you may know, the coronavirus outbreak, particularly as it is impacting the Asian continent, has had an impact on the operation of temples, and, I am sure, is also impacting the renovation efforts on the Tokyo Japan and Hong Kong China Temples. If the crews working on either or both temples have been advised to halt those efforts out of caution in relation to that virus, the duration of the delay in being able to resume that work may in turn impact the timing of the eventual completion of that work. Therefore, I am hazarding a guess that the rededication of the Tokyo temple may be deferred until early next year, though I don't know what that might mean for the timing of the anticipated rededication of the Mesa Arizona Temple.

Above and beyond that, however, with the Church having previously announced the opening dates and rededication for the Washington D.C. Temple, I had expresed surprise that there would be just over 6 weeks between the conclusion of the open house and the day of that temple's rededication. Yesterday, I came across an interesting article from someone currently living in the D.C. area, who posited the theory that the explanation for that lengthy gap (which could also explain the timing of the earlier-than-usual announcement of the information so far in advance of the relevant dates) could be the Church wanting to keep extra time open for tours, depending on the gauged interest in the open house process.

That in turn lead me to conclude that the Church may have initially put out a rededication date, but could subsequently determine to extend the rededication of that temple across multiple dates, in a reverse of the situation we saw for the Rome Italy Temple dedication last year, where 8 days of dedication were originally alloted, with the Brethren subsequently deciding to hold sessions over only 3 of the original 8. So I wouldn't be surprised if the rededication plans for this temple are also extended. On a separate note, I would also anticipate that the dedication of the Winnipeg Manitoba Temple, with it being a smaller temple, might take place before the rededication of the Washington D.C. Temple, and when I post my latest revisions to my estimates for future temple events, all of that will be reflected therein.

Next, over the last week, as time and circumstances have allowed me to do so, I have taken time to watch the Face-to-Face event for youth on the new Children and Youth program, which featured President Dallin H. Oaks, First Counselor in the First Presidency, and his wife, Kristen. While all of the broadcast was good, one thing in particular stuck out to me, which was a statement made by President Oaks. He said that one of his personal goals he's working on is putting together 7-8 talks, which will be given in various settings over the next six months, including in the upcoming April General Conference.

That statement led me to change my thoughts about the April 2020 General Conference yet again. And I realized that perhaps what would make the upcoming conference so unique would not be an increased number of addresses given by members of the Presidency of the Seventy and Presiding Bishopric of the Church, but the First Presidency having more opportunities to speak during this General Conference than we typically see. So in my newly-revised predictions, they will include only one speaker from the Presiding Bishopric, 2 from the Presidency of the Seventy, and 5 general officers of the Church, which will allow the First Presidency members more of an opportunity to speak.

I am taking my time with the revisions to my predictions, especially in light of the thoughts that came to me as detailed in the previous paragraphs. The insights I gleaned may delay the publication of those predictions 2-3 days beyond what I originally anticipated (as I had been planning on reposting them either later today or tomorrow sometime), so you can probably expect those to now be published later this week (by no later than Thursday or Friday, but hopefully on Tuesday or Wednesday).

And I have a variety of other projects coming down the pike in the near future, some of which I have outlined, others of which will be added to the plan going forward as I determine a need for them. Above and beyond anything else, I know that we are entering an unprecedented period of time, and I can't wait to see what's next. I am hopeful that between now and the weekend of General Conference that groundbreaking arrangements may be announced for at least 2 other temples, but that too is up to the discretion of the Lord and the inspiration He gives to His prophet, President Russell M. Nelson.

To the best of my ability, I continue to monitor all Church news reports and temple developments, and will pass along all such updates ASAP after I become aware of them. That does it for now. Any and all comments are, as always, welcome and appreciated, on any post at any time, as long as such comments are made in accordance with the established guidelines. Thank you for the privilege of your time. If you enjoyed what you read here and would like to stay informed of newly added content, please feel free to subscribe. Until my next post, I wish each one of you all the best and pray that the Lord will bless you all in everything you do.

Above and beyond these updates, however, tonight, the Church Temples site reported that site clearing is now officially underway for the Puebla Mexico Temple, which officially moves that temple out of the "Full-scale construction pending" status. The temple is anticipated to be dedicated sometime in 2023. That leaves the Lima Peru Los Olivos Temple as the only temple for which full-scale efforts are pending, and hopefully there will be word on that temple before the April 2020 General Conference. The news about the Puebla temple has been added to the document for which I shared the web address in my previous comment.

I continue to monitor all Church news and temple updates and will do my level best to bring word of those to you all as I become aware of such things. Thanks again, everyone!

  9. What is your prediction concerning the temporary closing of the temples in covid-19 outbreak areas (that to my knowledge remain open). When do you prefict the short closing of the Paris, Frankfurt, Rome temples, etc (and church meetings and missionaries in these regions). They have more cases than Hong Kong, Singapore, & Japan.... So when do we predict this announcement??? (And do you think the Seattle area will fall under similar circumstances?)

    1. Pills and Pillows, thanks for stopping by to request my input. Before I attempt an answer to your question, I wanted to let you know that I have not yet had a chance to look over things on the Church Growth Blog and to clarify my previously-offered position on the Church and the coronavirus. I apologize for my delay in doing so, but intend to follow through on that hopefully before the end of this week. Over the last few days, I have had some additional doctor's appointments, and my wife and I have been dealing with a variety of circumstances, including ongoing illness. Just wanted to let you know where I am at with that.

Having noted that, as far as temple closures due to concern about viruses, that is more than a little outside my area of expertise. What I can tell you, however, is that the Church has taken recent action to emphasize and highlight what is being done in the wake of the issue. And based on what I have read there, it appears that the leaders in Salt Lake have had somewhat regular contact with the presidencies of the affected Church areas invovled, so I know they are keeping informed on conditions there. If I had to hazard a guess, it would be that those conditions will continue to be evaluated, and that any decisions about reopening those temples will not be made until the Brethren are sure there is no danger in doing so.

Interestingly enough, it also appears that the virus is prompting a reexamination on the question of whether or not the Summer 2020 Olympics can go forward as scheduled. The IOC is taking a serious look at the question of whether holding the games would pose a danger to those competing or observing the games.

And it appears that the task force created in the US to monitor the situation and make recommendations based on that is taking a look at whether it would be necessary/wise to recommend the cancellation or postponement of all large-scale events. It appears as though new information about this situation is constantly being updated or changing.

That said, I know that the Church will be following and respecting the laws or guidelines of national governmental leaders in the wake of this situation. I certainly hope the temples in question can reopen soon, but it may perhaps be a little too premature to venture any kind of prediction about how soon that might occur. And given that the response to this issue is also impacting the renovation processes for the Tokyo Japan and Hong Kong China Temples, I wouldn't be surprised if the anticipated completion windows for either or both temples were pushed back.

One other thought in my lengthy reply here (sorry about my loquacity; brevity is not my strong suit): Prior to every General Conference, I publish a post containing predictiosn specific to that General Conference. I posted initial predictions for this upcoming one late last year, and have since repeatedly refined and fine-tuned them. I just completed another revison to those, and I am hosting an open commenting period on them until the first Wednesday in April. If you'd like to do so, I'd welcome you looking those over and offering any feedback. I need to completely redo the reference section of those predictions, but at least I have them up for now.

In the meantime, I again appreciate you stopping by to comment and asking for my thoughts on this question. Wish I had a more specific or inspired answer to offer you, but there it is, such as it is. My hope is to take care of clarifying my previously-expressed opinions on the Church Growth blog post in question before the end of this week. Again, my apologies for the delay on that, and thanks again for taking time to comment here. I always appreciate hearing from you.

  10. So you don't have a prediction for the European areas (or Seattle area) -- those are the areas I'm interested in as they surpass in cases what Singapore, Japan, & Hong Kong had ... So... It doesn't make sense to me why Asia would be targeted, but not Europe or US.... (Esp since Singapore has been handling this very well compared to Western countries). Why is the Church only publically enacting saftey measures in Asia, but not out West??? 🤔😬

    1. Pills and Pillow, I appreciate the chance to address your follow-up comment here. Before I try to venture an answer, i need to make a couple of things clear: I am not in any way privy to any of the decisions being made by local or general leaders, and because of that, I may not be the one best qualified to answer questions about why the Church does or does not do certain specific things in relation to certain specific situations in certain specific areas of the world. As a result, my assessment of questions of this nature will be just as imperfect as I myself am, based solely on whatever information or insight I can glean from sources available to me through my research, and from my understanding of Church procedures and practices. So I don't know whether or not I can give you a satisfactory answer, and even if I do, it is only my own assessment thereon, nothing more and nothing less.

With that disclaimer out of the way, here is what I know. The Church operates through lines of authority, from the very general level (where any decision is sanctioned by the Savior Himself) to the very most local level (congregational leaders, who, according to general leadership, are the ones doing the "real work" in the day-to-day progress of the Church in those areas.

So based purely on that understanding, if I had to venture a guess, I'd say that our general Church leaders are still working with area, mission, and congregational leaders to assess the situation in both places and to determine what is best to be done. And that is probably the case because, in those areas, local and national governments have not issued any guidelines upon which the Church would base a sound decision.

The reality of the matter is that, in some cases, the Church can best serve the members over whom they have stewardship by waiting and by allowing those members to have the advantage of freely gathering and worshipping, until it becomes absolutely necessary, as was deemed to be the case in Asia, for restrictions or alterations to be made to business as usual.

Here in Utah, local and national news outlets were reporting specifically that local and national leaders were meeting with experts, forming task forces, and monitoring the spread of COVID-19 so they could provide the appropriate recommendations. One thing under consideration nationally, based on what I heard, is to cancel or postpone concerts, sports events, and other gatherings that would otherwise see throngs of people out and about in the open air for long periods of time. Not sure how or if that might impact any religious gatherings, but I imagine those are part of the discussion and consideration.

All in all, though, it appears to be a matter of balancing the need for caution and prevention against the need for the Church to allow people to gather and worship together. And in a case like this, there is still so much unknown, with the situation evolving on a day-to-day basis. The situation today is different than it was this time yesterday.

And as situations change, recommendations and directives change as well. So I believe it comes down to the Church wanting to be sure that the right call is made for every area. What worked in Asia may not be the right answer for Europe or for the United States. Could that too change in the future? Of course. As situations evolve and factors change, decisions and recommendations change. But what it comes down to is properly assessing the situation on an area-by-area, case-by-case basis, and making the right decisions for the right areas at the right time. FWIW, these are my thoughts on your question. I apologize if they are not helpful enough, but thank you for your interest in my assessment on this matter. Thanks, Pillis and Pilllows.

    2. Pills and Pillows, if you haven't already, I'm sure you'll be pleased to hear that the Church's official Newsroom was updated today with a note that the Rome Italy Temple has been added to the list of those temporarily being closed as a precaution in the wake of the coronavirus. Based on that, perhaps over the next few days, other European temples may be similarly closed. I am sure in those cases, the temple closures are being deliberated for implementation through a common-sense strategy that strikes the kind of balance I mentioned in my previous comments. The official release can be consulted to confirm this information:

    4. Pills and Pillows, I wanted to comment again here to let you know that, on the latest comment thread for the Church Growth Blog, I have taken steps to clarify and correct my previously-offered comments on the coronavirus. I did that in the newest thread rather than the original one because I felt more people would see it there.

I am honestly not sure whether that comment, split into two on the thread, was everything it needed to be, because I have still been dealing with minor health nuisances and I am not at my best at the moment, but I wanted to get something posted in that respect sooner rather than later. Please feel free to let me know if anything further is needed from me in that respect. Thanks for giving me the chance to set the record straight in this respect.

  14. Hello again, everyone! The Church News has reported on a recent ministry visit paid by Acting President M. Russell Ballard of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, who returned and reunited with friends in Toronto Ontario Canada, where, decades earlier, President Ballard, accompanied by his wife, served as a mission president from 1974-1977. Though he didn't know it at the time he bagan that service, he would be concluding it as a General Authority of the Church. This latest return visit was all the more poignant because President Ballard was returning without his wife. The report is well worthy of your time:

  15. On this Sabbath Day, the Church News has shared the biographies of 8 more new mission leaders who will begin their service on or around July 1:

    https://www.thechurchnews.com/callings/2020-03-08/find-out-more-about-these-8-new-mission-presidents-and-companions-176027

Among those called are 1 former area seventy and 1 former executive secretary to area seventies. Each couple has also served in a wide range of Church callings in their local congregations. As I read the biographies of these newest mission leaders, I was reminded of what a small world we really do live in.

When I began what would wind up being a 6-year tenure serving in the Mount Timpanogos Utah Temple, my shift leaders assigned one of my fellow workers to train me in my new responsibilities. The man who trained me was a Brother Demar E. Weekes, and I learned much from him and grew close to him as we served together. I believe it was within 18 months or so of when I began serving that Brother weekes' wife passed away, and he indicated to me that he would be relocating to the eastern states to live with one of his children.

Anyways, long story short (too late!) I was very surprised and pleased to learn that one of the newly-called mission presidents who lives here in my current resident city of Orem, Utah happens to be the son of the man who trained me in my duties almost exactly 14 years ago today. From what I know of the Brother Weekes with whom I served, his son will no doubt make a remarkable mission president.

I appreciate my ongoing opportunities to share such news and analysis thereof with you all here. Within the next week (if not sooner), I hope to have the relevant references compiled for my April 2020 General Conference predictions, which is the most recent thing I focused a post on for this blog. I am assuming that I have not gotten any feedback on those as of yet due to the fact that, without those references, it may be a little difficult for many of you to understand my rationales on the content, so I will get those done ASAP.

In the meantime, I continue to monitor all Church news updates and temple developments and will do my level best to bring word of those to you all here as I become aware of such things. As always, thanks for your continued interest and ongoing support.

  16. Hello again, everyone! The Church has once again updated the following news release:

    https://newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org/article/coronavirus-update-february-27-2020

I don't know how obvious the updates might be to some of you (I had trouble for a bit finding that information), so I thought I would help out. THe principle update I noted for this information was the expansion of the nations in which alterations have been or will soon be made to normal Sunday worship services and scheduled conferences.

With those adjustments made previously for Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, and Seattle Washington, the following additional nations were added to that part of the release today: Mongolia, Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom. There has been no word as of yet as to whether the Frankfurt and Freiberg Germany and London and Preston England Temples have closed or will close in conjunction with the adjustments to regular Church meetings, but that update could come in a day or two. I believe that would depend entirely upon the assessment of local and regional Church leaders, any recommendations from governement, educational, or civic leaders, and the determination process by the leading Brethren of the Church turns out to be. That's the latest on the Church's response to the coronavirus. I will continue to mointor all Church news updates, especially on this, and all temple developments, and will do my level best to pass word of those along to you all as I become aware of such things.

In the meantime, on a more personal note, because I have sleep apnea and am seeing a new doctor for the treatment thereof, it has been recommended that I go in for a sleep study to ascertain how my treatment of that condition is going so that anything that needs to be adjusted can be. I am scheduled to go in for that study tonight, and will not be able to post comments or replies to comments here for the duration of that study. If any of you have anything new to add between this evening and tomorrow in the mid-morning and I don't respond thereunto, that will be why. My thanks once again to you all.

The Newsroom has also reported on the 2020 Interfaith Evening, which was held in the Tabernacle at Temple Square last night, and which included musical performances from prominent religious organizations in and around Salt Lake, along with remarks or prayers from the leaders of a few different faiths, including, from our Church, remarks opening the evening (which were offered by General Authority Seventy Elder Walter F. Gonzalez) and a performance by the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square:

It doesn't look as though there were any updates from the Church today on the COVID-19 situation, but I will be sure to pass that and other Church news updates along to you all ASAP after I learn of them. There may be one or more temple updates that I need to pass along as well, which I will do later today if that is the case. In the interim, I continue to work as consistently as I can on the notes for my General Conference predictions, and I hope to havve those references completely added thereunto before the end of this week. In the meantime, my thanks once again to you all.

In addition to my life-long love for the subjects which I cover in the posts of this blog, I have long held the belief that we can disagree without becoming disagreeable. Differences of opinion are natural, while being disagreeable in expressing those differences is not. And in that sense, I have no desire to close the door on anyone who earnestly desires to contribute to the ongoing dialogue on subjects covered in the posts on this blog.

At the same time, however, I recognize that we live in a time when incivility, discourtesy, unkindness, and even cyber-bullying has regrettably become part of online interactions. With that in mind, while anyone who wishes can comment on anything if they choose to do so, I hereby reserve the right to immediately delete any comments which are critical, unkind, lack civility, or promote prodcuts, services, and values contrary to either the Church, or to the rules of online etiquette.

I'd also like to remind all who comment here that I try to respond personally to each individual comment as I feel is appropriate. Such replies are not meant to end the conversation, but to acknowledge earnest feedback as it is submitted.

And in order to better preserve the spirit and pure intentions for which this blog was established, I also hereby request that anyone not commenting with a regular user name (particularly those whose comments appear under the "Unknown" or "Anonymous" monikers, give the rest of us a name to work with in addressing any replies. If such individuals do not wish to disclose their actual given names, a pseudonym or nickname would suffice.

Any comments made by individuals who opt to not give a name by which they can ber identified may, depending on the substance and tone of such comments, be subject to deletion as well. I would respectfully ask that all of us do all we can to keep the dialogue positive, polite, and without malice or ill-will. May the Lord bless us all in our discussion of these important matters.
