UPDATE: First Quarter 2024 Review of Temple Construction Progress

Hello again, everyone! With the final day of March coming to its' official conclusion, and as we head into April, I am pleased to provide a look back at temple construction progress through the first quarter of 2024. For this review, I have a link to what my temple construction progress report looked like on the first day of this year and a look at where things stand as the first quarter of 2024 ends. 

We are still getting regular temple construction updates every Monday, so I will be back to cover whatever that announcement is tomorrow. BREAKING TEMPLE NEWS: Provo Utah Temple Renamed; Exterior Rendering Released and Groundbreaking Set for Teton River Idaho Temple; Site Location and Initial Details Confirmed for the Jacksonville Florida Temple

Hello again, everyone! As anticipated, because yesterday was Presidents' Day in the United States, today, the First Presidency made their weekly major temple announcements. Included this week are a rename for the Provo Utah Temple, the exterior rendering released and groundbreaking set for the Teton River Idaho Temple, and the site location and preliminary information released for the Jacksonville Florida Temple. There's a lot to get into here, so let's dive right in:

The Provo Utah Temple, which will close for renovation on Saturday, will now be known as the Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple. The release states: "The Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple will be built to current seismic codes and have reconfigured rooms and energy-efficient electrical, heating, and plumbing systems." And of course, there is also the redesign, which will see its' exterior changed to match its' sister temple in Orem. It occurred to me to wonder if this name change may be in advance of a potential third temple coming to the Provo area. But the Rock Canyon name makes sense. I am grateful for this news.

We now move on to the Teton River Idaho Temple groundbreaking. As mentioned, it will be one of the largest in the Church. I heard a rumor through the Church Growth Blog that this announcement was forthcoming, so it's nice to have that confirmed. The rendering reminds me of other temples of a similar size. I will defer to any of you who would like to comment more on the exterior rendering of this temple. In the meantime, the groundbreaking for this temple has been set to occur on Saturday, June 1, with Elder Ricardo P. Gimenez presiding.

I think we will likely see other groundbreakings take place between the March 9 groundbreaking of the San Luis Potosi Mexico Temple and the June 1 groundbreaking for the Teton River Idaho Temple as announced today. As to which temples might have a groundbreaking between now and then, that's not for me to say. But the good news is that I think other groundbreakings will be announced between today and General Conference weekend, so I look forward to seeing what happens there.

We now move on to the site location and preliminary information for the Jacksonville Florida Temple, which was originally announced in October 2022. A 6.6-acre site located at 3323 Loretto Road, Jacksonville, Florida, will be the home to a single-story, 29,000-square-foot edifice. There are now only 44 announced temples that have not had any official information confirmed yet.

The Provo Utah Temple being renamed took me by complete surprise, as did the release of information about the Jacksonville Flordia Temple. As I noted earlier, I had anticipated the groundbreaking would soon be announced for the Teton River Idaho Temple, and the fact that it will be a larger temple means it makes perfect sense that a groundbreaking announced for it now will only take place in early June.

BREAKING TEMPLE NEWS: Exterior Rendering and Groundbreaking Information Released for the San Luis Potosi Mexico Temple

Hello again, everyone! Today, as expected, the next major temple construction update has been announced. I was not expecting this, but today's announcement related to the San Luis Potosi Mexico Temple. Its' exterior rendering has been released and a groundbreaking date has been set. Let's break down the details:

This temple was announced during General Conference in April 2022. Its' site location was confirmed a little over six months later, several weeks after the October 2022 General Conference. The groundbreaking will occur in just over a month, on Saturday, March 9, 2024, with Elder Sean Douglas, Second Counselor in the Mexico Area presidency, presiding thereat. 

Today's announcement gives me hope that we could see groundbreakings for other temples sooner than I've conjectured, because I wasn't anticipating today's announcement and had projected a window of late 2024 for that temple's groundbreaking. So the fact that this groundbreaking will occur in March is huge news. Also, this means that 2024's second temple groundbreaking will be taking place one month earlier than 2023's second temple groundbreaking.

So if other temples in the queue can likewise have an exterior rendering released and a groundbreaking announced simultaenously, or if others can get a site announcement confirmed, a rendering released, and a groundbreaking announced, there could be many other drastic shifts to the current queue of announced temples as we know it. And this indicates that the Church may indeed be able to do a double-digit number of groundbreakings this year. 

With the size of the San Luis Potosi Mexico Temple, I''m sure it could easily be constructed speedily, possibly having construction wrap up sometime in 2026 or 2027. Stay tuned for more on this as that information is released.

Final 2023 Temple Construction Progress Report

Hello again, everyone! As the final minutes of 2023 come to a close, we take a look back at the major progress made on temple construction in 2023. The highlights included 11 dedications and 2 rededications, 8 temple groundbreakings, and numerous site announcements and exterior renderings. There was also tremendous progress on temples in various phases of construction and renovation.

As a matter of review, here is what the temple construction program looked like as 2023 began, on the Saturday of the April 2023 General Conference, at the end of the first half of 2023, at the conclusion of the October 2023 General Conference weekend, and at the end of 2023. There has been tremendous progress in temple construction this year, and I've been privileged to track, report, and pass along all the updates.

As 2024 begins, my hope is for another year of double-digit dedications, double-digit groundbreakings, and many more updates in terms of site announcements, exterior renderings, and general progress updates. I have no doubt we've got significantly substantial updates coming down the pike, and I look forward to seeing that unfold and covering it all for you here.

President Jeffrey R. Holland Observes His 83rd Birthday

Hello again, everyone! With today being December 3, President Jeffrey R. Holland is observing his 83rd birthday. I know that the Lord is no respector of persons, and doesn't play favorites, but on a personal level, I wanted to reiterate again that he is one of my favorite apostles. I have a couple of familial connections to him. My dad was born and raised in St. George, and his father (Dean Stokes), was Elder Holland's home teaching companion when "young Jeff" was an Aaronic Priesthood holder. According to my dad, his father often expressed his wonder that a boy like Elder Holland had become an apostle of the Lord.

I know that at times, it may seem that some members of the Church, to varying degrees, have put the leading Brethren of the Church on a pedestal, but I am reminded in accounts, such as that which was shared by my grandfather, that these men may have been foreordained to the apostleship, but they are no different than any other member of the Church; the Lord just ordered their lives based on their personal choices in such a way that when such calls came to them, they were qualified through years of service in the Church and living what they believe. That is important for all of us to remember.

My mom is a freelance proofreader, and in the early days of her marriage to my dad, she worked on many projects for the Church Educational System. Since that occurred at the time when then-Brother Holland was the Commissioner of the CES, he was essentially my mom's "boss." And she speaks warmly of the experiences she had working with him on such projects. Personal connections aside, I wanted to share a brief biographical sketch of Elder Holland.

Jeffrey Roy Holland was born in St. George, Utah to Frank D. and Alice Bentley Holland on December 3, 1940. He served a full-time mission in the British Isles. His mission president was Marion D. Hanks, (who at that time was a member of the now-defunct First Council of the Seventy and later served in the First Quorum and Presidency of the Seventy). One of young Jeff Holland's missionary companions was Quentin L. Cook, alongside whom he would later serve in the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

Of now-President Holland, Elder Cook has remarked that it is interesting to him that he, as the previously-senior missionary companion to Elder Holland, is now the junior apostle to his former junior companion. Following the concusion of his missionary service, he attended BYU, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in English and a master’s degree in religious education. Additionally, shortly after his release from missionary service, he married his high school sweetheart, Patricia Terry, in 1963. They are the parents of a daughter and two sons, one of whom, Matthew, has served as the President of Utah Valley University and as president of the North Carolina Raliegh Mission. During General Conference in April 2020, Matthew S. Holland was sustained as a General Authority Seventy, marking the first time a fahter-and-son duo have served together as general authorities since the July 2015 death of President Boyd K. Packer. 

Once Elder Holland earned his bachelor's and master's degrees, he went on to earn a doctorate degree in American studies from Yale. He then became a professor at BYU, serving as Dean of the College of Religion. He served as Commissioner of Church Education from 1976-1980. In 1980, President Dallin H. Oaks, who was then serving as President of BYU-Provo, announced his intention to move on to other opportunities. Commissioner Holland was put in charge of the committee to find the new BYU President. 

Two days later, he was stunned when the First Presidency appointed him to that assignment. He had reportedly been favored for the position by President N. Eldon Tanner, who was then serving as First Counselor in the First Presidency, and was the protege of then-Elder Gordon B. Hinckley, who at that time was the senior member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles asssigned to the Church Board of Education. Elder Holland would go on to serve as president of BYU for 9 years himself, until his April 1, 1989 call as a General Authority and member of the First Quorum of the Seventy. 

Prior to his call to general Church service, Elder Holland also served as a bishop, counselor in a stake presidency, and regional representative. After the First Presidency was reorganized following the death of President Ezra Taft Benson, President Howard W. Hunter took immediate action to fill the apostolic vacancy. In the space of a few short hours on Thursday June 23, President Hunter issued a call to the apostleship to Elder Holland, gave him his apostolic charge, set apart and ordained him to that calling, and had him join the other 14 apostles in their weekly meeting at the temple. That action was sustained by Church membership during the Solemn Assembly that was held exactly 100 days later.

As we know, then-Elder Holland experienced significant health challenges earlier this year that reportedly almost ended his life and kept him from speaking in both General Conferences this year. Prior to that hospitalization,Elder Holland also experienced the death of his sweet wife.

As we also know, President M. Russell Ballard, Acting President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles,died on Sunday November 12, with Elder Holland set appart to succeed him in that assignment 3 days later.

President Holland has given a total of 60 addresses in General Conference.  Of those, 3 were prior to his apostolic call. The first time he spoke during General Conference was in April 1983, while he was serving as the President of Brigham Young University. He spoke alongside his son during that session. He gave two other talks following his 1989 call as a General Authority Seventy, and the remaining 57 General Conference addresses as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. 

To me, it always seems as though the talks given by President Holland are specifically focused on something I have been dealing with personally at the time. As a consequence, listening to him speak every six months is one of my favorite things about General Conference weekends, and I have keenly felt his absence from the two General Conferences this year. The last thing I want to mention about Elder Holland is that he is currently the most-senior member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and the third in seniority among all current apostles. 

He is also the third-oldest member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, and is the sixth-oldest among all living apostles. Interestingly enough, although he is the most senior of the three apostles born in 1940 (with Elders Uchtdorf and Cook being the other two), he is the youngest of the three. His apostolic seatmate, Elder Uchtdorf,  obsrved his 83rd birthday just under one month ago, with Elder Cook having done the same two months prior to that.

I am grateful for the life and ministry of Elder Holland, and for the chance I had to write this post in his honor today. BREAKING TEMPLE NEWS: Open House and Rededication Announced for Manti Utah Temple; President Jeffrey R. Holland Will Rededicate the St. George Utah Temple

Hello again, everyone! The First Presidency has announced opening arrangements for the Manti Utah Temple. A media day will be held on Monday, March 11, with VIP tours held March 11-13. The public open house will run from Thursday, March 14-Friday, April 3, excluding the Sundays of March 17, 24, and 31. The temple will be rededicated on Sunday, April 21, 2024, and will be broadcast to all units in the Manti Utah Temple district. Additional details, including who will preside at the rededication, will be released at a later date.

The Church additionally announced today that President Jeffrey R. Holland, Acting President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, will preside at the rededication of the St. George Utah Temple on December 10, 2023. I had suspected he would be involved if he was able to do so, so it's nice to have that officially confirmed. This announcement has me hopeful that President Holland might also be present for the Red Cliffs Utah Temple dedication, even though President Eyring has been assigned to preside at that event.

I'm a little surprised that we got the announcement about Manti so soon, and that it will be rededicated in April. The fact that we got this announcement while several completed temples are still awaiting theirs may suggest that getting Manti back up and running was a higher priority. This also means that mid-April may be the earliest the next temple dedication will be scheduled.

UPDATE: Third Quarter 2023 Temple Construction Progress Updates

Hello again, everyone! As the final moments of September (and thus the third quarter of 2023) wind down, it is time to take a look at where temple construction stands as of the end of this quarter. So, by way of review, let's look back at where things stood as 2023 began, on the Saturday of the April 2023 General Conference, at the end of the first half of 2023, and where things stand now.

The data largely speaks for itself. I also recognize that the last report will be outdated in about 16 hours, when, at the conclusion of the Sunday Afternoon Session of General Conference, President Nelson will likely announce new temples. The new temples will be added to both the third-quarter report and the main temple construction progress document. I am looking forward to that announcement.

BREAKING TEMPLE NEWS: Manhattan New York Temple to Close for Renovation; Site Locations Announced for Temples In California, Brazil, and Bolivia

Hello again, everyone! The first major temple construction announcement in months that has not been related to a temple open house has just been released. As stated in the post title, the Manhattan New York Temple will close for renovations, and sites have been announced for the San Jose California, Natal and Teresina Brazil, and La Paz Bolivia Temples. Having posted preliminary coverage of this announcement, let's now dive into the details:

We start with the Manhattan New York Temple. The 119th dedicated temple of the Church will close for extensive renovations sometime next year, and those renovations are anticipated to wrap up sometime in 2027. The renovation will include an upgrade to the meetinghouse spaces, so while renovations are underway, the congregations that meet in the chapel spaces will be hosted in neighboring meetinghouses. Members in the Manhattan New York Temple district are encouraged to worship at the Hartford Connecticut or Philadelphia Pennsylvania Temples. An updated rendering of the temple has been provided.

The La Paz Bolivia Temple, planned to be a 18,850-square-foot edifice will rise on a 3.8-acre site near the intersection of Avenida Los Sauces and Calle 8 de Calacoto in Calacoto, La Paz, Bolivia. The temple was first announced in October 2021. The Natal and Teresina Brazil Temples were just announced in April by President Nelson. The Natal Brazil Temple will be a The La Paz Bolivia Temple, planned to be a 18,850-square-foot edifice will rise on a 3.8-acre site near the intersection of Avenida Los Sauces and Calle 8 de Calacoto in Calacoto, La Paz, Bolivia. The temple was first announced in October 2021. 

The Natal and Teresina Brazil Temples were just announced in April by President Nelson. The Natal Brazil Temple, a single-story edifice of approximately 19,800 square feet, will be built on a 5.53-acre site at Av. Senador Salgado Filho (BR-101), Nova Parnamirim, Parnamirim, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. And the Teresina Brazil Temple will be a 25,420-square-foot edifice (no indication whether it will be a single- double- or triple-story temple) at Av. Cajuína and Rua Pedro Conde, Noivos, Teresina, Piaui on a 3.6-acre site.

In view of today's significant update, the number of temples with sites announced now rises to 35. And with a total number of 79 temples, 2 have groundbreakings scheduled, leaving the number of temples with no official information announced yet down at 42. With the time between now and General Conference weekend, if several more temples have initial details announced, that will lower the numbers further. I am also cautiously optimistic that groundbreaking announcements might be coming more regularly, and that site announcements and exterior renderings might be more frequent in the weeks between now and the October 2023 General Conference weekend.

With that said, that concludes my report on the temple news today. However, I wanted to provide a preview of what I've got coming between now and the weekend of the October 2023 General Conference. Elder Quentin L. Cook will be observing his 83rd birthday on September 8. The next day, President Nelson will become the first prophet/apostle to observe his 98th birthday.  

My next apostolic milestone update and the third-quarter-2023 review of temple construction progress will both be published on October 1, along with any coverage on new temples that are announced on that date, which will be the Sunday of General Conference weekend. The Monday after General Conference, I will provide a birthday tribute to Elder Ulisses Soareas, who will observe his 65th birthday on October 2, followed by an October 8 post honoring President M. Russell Ballard on his 95th birthday.

UPDATE: Overview of Temple Construction Prgoress During the Second Quarter (and First Half) of 2023

Hello again, everyone! As the final minutes of the second quarter (and first half) of 2023 move toward their inevitable conclusion, I wanted to provide an overview of temple construction progress throughout the last six months. We begin with the document showing where temple construction stood as 2023 began, on the first day of the April 2023 General Conference, and where things stand at this mid-point of 2023.

The data largely speaks for itself. While I am not surprised at the high number of temples that have already been dedicated this year, I have been surprised by the slower pace the Church has taken in announcing subsequent dedications. Again, that seems to simply be the result of supply chain issues, which will not last forever. And the temples currently in the construction queue have moved a lot both forward and backward in terms of their completion orders and estimates.

Quite frankly, I was also surprised that the St. George Utah Temple will be rededicated before the end of this year. With Elder Holland having started to return to his apostolic duties, I believe he will either preside over or accompany whomever presides over both the rededication of the St. George Utah Temple and the dedication of the Red Cliffs Utah Temple.

And I'm cautiously optimistic that once the Saratoga Springs, Orem, Red Cliffs, Layton, and Taylorsville Utah Temples are dedicated, additional Utah temples could be announced.

I was similarly stunned that this first half of 2023 only had 4 temple groundbreakings. I'm cautiously optimistic that we could see over a dozen temple groundbreakings in this second half of 2023. And I'm sure we've got other site confirmations and exterior renderings coming down the pike in the near term, especially if the Church continues its' custom of sharing major temple construction news once a week. So I think we are in for a very busy second half of 2023.

BREAKING TEMPLE NEWS: Open House and Dedication Set for Orem Utah Temple; Closure Date Announced for Provo Utah Temple; Location and Preliminary Details Released for the Wichita Kansas Temple

 Hello again, everyone! At this 2:00 PM hour on this Tuesday, the Church has shared the next major temple construction announcement has been made, which means that Tuesday may be the new standard date for temple news going forward. What we have today is opening arrangements for the Orem Utah Temple; an official closure date for the Provo Utah Temple; and the site location and initial information for the Wichita Kansas Temple. There's a lot to break down, so let's get right into it.

We begin with the Orem Utah Temple. Following a media day on Monday, October 23, and VIP tours from Tuesday, October 24-Thursday October 26, the public open house will be held between Friday, October 27-Saturday, December 16, 2023, except for the Sundays of October 29, November 2, 9, 16, 23, and 30, and December 3 and 10. 

The dedication of that temple will follow in two sessions at 12:30 and 3:30 PM on Sunday, January 21, 2024. I was intrigued by the later times for these sessions. That may indicate that another temple dedication is anticipated to be held on that day.  No word on who will preside at that dedication, but the fact that this is the first temple dedication for 2024 is significant. 

I wouldn't be shocked if a member of the First Presidency, perhaps even President Nelson himself, presides at this dedication, but either of his counselors or any members of the Twelve with ties to that part of Utah County could be chosen for the task. At a glance, that may include President Dallin H. Oaks, or Elders D. Todd Christofferson or Ronald A. Rasband.

I also don't know what this might indicate about the timing of the dedications for the Lima Peru Los Olivos and Red Cliffs Utah Temples, but if I had to guess, one of the two might be dedicated by the end of the year, and the other might be delayed until next year. It's also possible that both will be dedicated next year on either January 14, 21, or 28. Stay tuned for further updates on this as I receive word thereof.

We now shift to the Provo Utah Temple, which, as we know, was announced to be reconstructed once the Orem Utah Temple was dedicated. Since that dedication has now been set, the Church has also announced the closure date for the Provo Utah Temple. That temple will be open through Saturday, February 24, and will close at the end of that day. I have ventured a completion estimate of late 2026 or sometime in 2027, but it could be completed sooner if construction goes smoothly and without interruption.

That brings us to the information released today about the Wichita Kansas Temple site. The temple will rise at at Lot 1 Block 1 of The Moorings Plaza Fourth Addition, Wichita, Sedgwick County, Kansas. Plans call for a single-story temple of approximately 9,950 square feet on the 6.42 acre site, and the temple may or may not use the modular design. I

t was my original understanding that the Church intended the Helena Montana, Casper Wyoming, and Elko Nevada Temples to all use the modular design, but the modular method was apparently only used on the first of those 3. The Okinawa Japan Temple was the right size for the modular design, but as far as I'm aware, that was built with normal methods. And the Casper and Elko temples were apparently built normally as well.

It's possible also that the Port Moresby Papua Nee Guinea, Port Vila Vanuatu, Tarawa Kiribati, and Torreon Mexico Temples all use the modular design as well, as could any temple with a floor plan close to 10,00 square feet. But I'm less sure on that than I once was. The Wichita Kansas Temple was one of the last two US temples announced in April 2022 that did not have any information officially confirmed. The last one is Missoula Montana. And today's announcement on the Wichita Kansas Temple means that 47 of the 79 announced temples have not had official information confirmed yet.

As I noted at the beginning of this post, with the Orem Utah Temple dedication set to occur next year, it remains to e seen how soon the Lima Peru Los Olivos and Red Cliffs Utah Temples could have official opening arrangements announced. But I'm glad we have additional information about these three temples today. Since it appears that Tuesday is the new standard day of the week for major temple updates, I will be sure to keep an eye out for those and will pass them along ASAP as time and circumstances allow.

I likewise monitor all updates from the Church News and the Newsroom, and any other temple construction developments and will pass those along to you all as I receive word thereof. Hello again, everyone! On this Monday, the First Presidency has announced the arrangements for the open house and rededication of the St. George Utah Temple. I was surprised that the announcement has been made already, and that it is apparently the only major temple news shared today. Let's get into the details: A media day will be held on Monday, September 11, with VIP tours held from Tuesday, September 12-Friday September 15, 2023.

A public open house will follow between Saturday, September 16-Saturday, November 11, 2023. The temple will then be rededicated in two sessions (at 10:00 AM and 1:30 PM) on Sunday, December 10, 2023. Interestingly, the release doesn't say who will rededicate that temple. I believe that is the case because the Church is waiting to see whether Elder Holland will be well enough to preside at that event.

Not only was this announcement sooner than I expected but the open house and rededication windows are both a lot shorter than I anticipated. I thought the Church would have a similar-length open house to the Saratoga Springs Utah Temple, and that this temple would only be rededicated next year. But the Lord knows what He's doing in inspiring these arrangements, so I have no doubt this was inspired.

That is the only temple announcement for today. So now we have an answer on the question of the St. George Utah Temple open house and rededication. I continue to monitor all such updates and will be sure to pass word of those along to you all here as I become aware thereof. In the meantime, that does it for now. BREAKING TEMPLE NEWS: Renovations Coming to the San Diego California Temple

 Hello again, everyone! As I mentioned at the tail end of my previous post, the Newsroom officially confirmed the dedication of the Okinawa Japan temple would occur, as specified in the Japanese Newsroom release. It also specified that  Elder Gary E. Stevenson will preside at that temple's dedication. That is fitting and proper since Elder Stevenson served his mission in Japan, later served as a mission president in that same nation, and came back again to Japan following his 2008 call as a General Authority Seventy when he served in the Asia North Area presidency and later as the president thereof.

But in addition to that, the Church's Newsroom release also indicated that renovations are coming to the San Diego California Temple, which will close in July 2023. That temple was originally dedicated by President Gordon B. Hinckley, then First Counselor in the First Presidency to President Ezra Taft Benson. The dedication occurred on April 25-30, 1992. 

Though no other details of this renovation are available, I wouldn't be surprised if electrical, mechanical, and ancillary systems are updated, and it's possible that some of the furnishings and fixtures will be replaced, that rooms could be reconfigured or that parts of the temple could be altered for greater efficiency and durability. An estimated completion and open house and rededication arrangements will be provided at a later time.

BREAKING TEMPLE NEWS: President Nelson Announces 15 New Temples as the April 2023 General Conference Concludes

Hello again, everyone! In all but one of the Church's 10 previous General Conferences held since early 2018, the Sunday Afternoon Session has usually concluded with closing remarks and the announcement of new temples by our beloved prophet, President Russell M. Nelson. Today was no different. I am pleased to report that 15 new templeshave been announced in each of the following locations: 

Retalhuleu Guatemala; Iquitos Peru; Teresina & Natal Brazil; Tuguegarao City & Iloilo Philippines; Jakarta Indonesia; Hamburg Germany; Lethbridge Alberta Canada; San Jose and Bakersfield California; Springfield Missouri; Charlotte North Carolina; Winchester Virginia; and Harrisburg Pennsylvania. Today's announcement brings the total number of temples in the Church to 315, 133 (42% of which President Nelson has personally announced).

I had the following 9 locations exactly correct: Iquitos Peru, Teresina and Natal Brazil, Jakarta Indonesia, Hamburg Germany, Lehtbridge Alberta Canada, San Jose and Bakersfield California, and Charlotte North Carolina. I had the right general location but the wrong specific location for the following temples: Retalhuleu Guatemala & Tuguegaro City & Iloilo Philippines, And the following temples announced were not on my radar, but perhaps they should have been: Springfield Missouri, Winchester Virginia, and Harrisburg Pennsylvania.

As a general note, unless I am mistaken, Sister Wendy Nelson is a native of Raymond Alberta, and the temple in Lethbridge will likely serve the area in which she grew up. Matthew Martinich, who maintains the Church Growth Blog, will likely have more information on this than I could provide here. With today's announcement of new temples, the Church may or may not have another major temple construction update announced at around 2:00 PM tomorrow afternoon. 

But if such an announcement is made, I will be sure to cover it here ASAP once I learn of it. In the meantime, that does it for now. UPDATE: First Quarter 2023 Review of Temple Construction Progress

With the final day of March coming to its' official conclusion, and as we head into April, I am pleased to provide a look back at temple construction progress through the first quarter of 2023. We are still getting regular temple construction updates every Monday. I don't anticipate that this weekend's General Conference will change that, so I anticipate that Monday will mark the first major temple construction announcement since General Conference weekend. BREAKING TEMPLE NEWS: Groundbreaking Set for the Montpelier Idaho Temple; Site Location and Preliminary Details Confirmed for the Maceio Brazil Temple

 Hello again, everyone! As I mentioned a few minutes ago, there was no new temple update at 2:00. However, here we are at around 2:30, and such an update has been published. The First Presidency has announced the groundbreaking arrangements for the Montpelier Idaho Temple and the site location and initial details for the Maceió Brazil Temple. Let's get right into the details:

Ground will be broken for the Montpelier Idaho Temple on Saturday, June 17, 2023, with Elder Ryan K. Olsen, a GA Seventy, presiding. An official rendering for the temple, and additional details about the groundbreaking, will be released closer to that time. By way of review, the Montpelier Idaho Temple was announced in April 2022, with the site location and initial details confirmed just 1 month later. 

As for the Maceió Brazil Temple (which was also announced in April of last year), the single-story 19,000-square-foot temple will rise at the location of  Avenida — Dr. Durval de Góis Monteiro, S/N, Quadra 0522, Lote 0228. Project leaders will work with government officials through the planning and approvals process, and an exterior rendering will likely be released closer to the time of its groundbreaking.

I'm a little surprised about the timing for the Montpelier Idaho Temple groundbreaking. My assumption is that the Church wanted to lock in a date for the groundbreaking now and then do the work to ensure the approvals can go through so that the exterior rendering can then be released once it gets the go-ahead from the governmental leaders with whom the Church will work. I think this may be the first time (at least in a couple of decades) that the Church has set a groundbreaking for any temple without a rendering being simultaneously released or released before the groundbreaking is announced.

To get these two updates in the same announcement was exciting. It's interesting to see how these announcements have come about. I will likewise be curious to see how the scheduling of other groundbreakings, dedications, and rededications works in the months ahead. I am watching out for word on all of these updates and will do my best to pass word thereof along to you all here, in addition to all Church News and Newsroom updates as they cross my radar. 

Between now and my next update, here is a revised copy of the document showing temples for which no official information has been announced. Of the 68 temples currently announced, 38 have not yet had any official information confirmed. If the First Presidency continues to announce preliminary information about other announced temples, either in conjunction with or separate from other temple construction announcements, those numbers are likely to change in the weeks ahead.

2022 Year-End Review of Temple Construction

Hello again, everyone! In these closing minutes of 2022, I would be remiss if I failed to pass along a look back at temple construction progress during this year. First, it's worth referring back to the three-part summary of temple construction developments published by the Church News. 

The first part highlighted temple dedications and rededications, when they occurred, and who presided at each one. A total of 4 temple rededications and 5 new temple dedications took place in 2022, and the Church has already set the first three temple dedications for next year.

The second part summarized key information about the 16 temple groundbreakingss held this year, which outpaced the 12 temples that had groundbreakings last year. The Church has already set the first temple groundbreaking for 2023, and a minimum of 27 others could also have groundbreakings next year.  

The second part also highlighted the fact that there are 37 other temples worldwide that are currently under construction (5 in Utah; 8 elsewhere in the United States, 3 in Central America, 6 in South America, 3 in Africa, 8 in Asia, and the final 3 in Oceania). The article also highlighted the 3 temples currently undergoing renovation and 3 others for which renovations have been scheduled.

The final article, published earlier today, highlighted information about the announced temples. With 35 new temples announced this year, that is a new record. Of all the announced temples, 1 has a  groundbreaking scheduled, and 27 others could also have a groundbreaking in 2023. 

That includes a total of 6 temples that had sites revealed and exterior renderings released prior to this year, and a whopping 17 others that had sites revealed this year alone, with 1 of those having an exterior rendering released at the same time as the site confirmation, and 4 others having exterior renderings released after the site confirmation.

Interestingly enough, two of those closest to a groundbreaking (the Montpelier and Teton River Idaho Temples) have had sites confirmed and cleared for likely groundbreakings, but neither of them have had exterior renderings released. I anticipate those two temples, along with the other 14 temples that have had sites confirmed, might soon have exterior renderings released in 2023 as well.

Regarding the the remaining 41 temples in the planning and design phase, the final 6 in the United States (which were announced in October of last year or April or October of this year) could soon have sites announced..4 others outside the United States could have official details announced soon after the first of the year, and the remaining 31 are announced. And I have another document showing information about the 41 temples for which no official details have been announced yet.

Having shared that information, by way of review, I wanted to look back at where temple construction stood as 2023 began, one day before the April 2022 General Conference at the mid-point of 2022, on the first morning of the October 2022 General Conference, and where things stand as 2022 concludes. I appreciated this chance to review temple construction progress for 2022. I will be back shortly with a final post for the year, looking back at the major developments in the Church in 2022.

BREAKING TEMPLE NEWS: Opening Dates Set For the Columbus Ohio and Richmond Virginia Temples

Hello again, everyone! Another Monday afternoon has rolled around, and the First Presidency has released another major temple construction announcement. Opening dates have been set for two temples in the United States: Columbus Ohio and Richmond Virginia. Let's break down the details: First up is information on the open house and rededication of the Columbus Ohio Temple. A media day will be held on Monday, April 24, 2023, followed by VIP tours from Tuesday-Friday April 25-28. 

The public open house will follow between Saturday, April 29, and Saturday, May 13 (excluding the Sundays of April 30 and May 7). The temple will be rededicated on Sunday, June 4 in three sessions at 9:00 AM, 12:00 PM, and 3:00 PM EDT, under the direction of Acting President M. Russell Ballard of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

And for the Richmond Virginia Temple, the Church will hold a media day on Monday, March 20, with VIP tours between Tuesday, March 21-Friday, March 24. Public tours will be held from Saturday, March 25-Saturday, April 15, 2023, excluding the Sundays of March 26, April 9, and April 16, and General Conference weekend on Saturday and Sunday, April 1-2, 2023.

The dedication of that temple will follow on Sunday, May 7, 2023, under the direction of Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, also of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, in three sessions at 9:00 AM, 12:00 PM, and 3:00 PM EDT. Interestingly, no youth devotionals were mentioned in today's announcement. And I also found it interesting that the announcement did not include opening arrangements for the Saratoga Springs Utah Temple. 

I was also somewhat baffled by the timing of the respective dedication and rededication of these two temples. Perhaps that indicates that all dedications will be more spread out than I have suggested. Hopefully next week, we get an announcement on the opening arrangements for the Saratoga Springs Utah Temple, whether or not that announcement is made in conjunction with any other temple updates.

BREAKING NEWS: Church Announces Christmas Day 2022 and New Year 2023 Plans: Construction Concludes on Columbus Ohio Temple

Hello again, everyone! A few years ago, the last time Christmas Day fell on a Sunday, the First Presidency announced that only Sacrament Meeting would be held Churchwide on that day to emphasize and underscore the importance of family time. According to a First Presidency announcement made this afternoon that will be the case again this year. Based on local needs, stake and district presidents may consult with bishops and branch presidents to determine the best time to hold that service on Christmas Day. 

The announcement also notes that, since the following Sunday marks New Year's Day 2023, stake and district presidents may opt to hold Fast Sunday in January on a Sunday other than January 1. Today's announcement further indicated that any Church functions (dances or other social events) occurring on New Year's Eve should promptly end at midnight on Sunday, January 1, 2023, which is consistent with the Church's policies relating to the Sabbath Day observance.

I am grateful to have been able to find out about this announcement and to pass that along to you all here. I also continue to monitor all other Church news updates and temple developments and will be sure to pass those along to you all as I receive them. Regarding that statement, the Church Temples site noted today that the renovation of the Columbus Oho Temple has officially been completed. 

With that in mind, I think that Monday's temple announcement, whether or not anything else is announced with it, will be the reopening arrangements for that temple. If that happens, my research shows that the rededication may occur on either of the last two Sundays in March or the second Sunday of April, following General Conference weekend. Stay tuned for news on any other fronts.

BREAKING TEMPLE NEWS: Site Location and Preliminary Information Released for the Grand Rapids Michigan Temple

Hello again, everyone! As I've mentioned in the recent past, on Monday, between 1-3 PM here in Utah, the Church has been announcing major temple updates. Today is no exception, as the site location and preliminary information have been confirmed for the Grand Rapids Michigan Temple, yet another US temple announced last month by President Nelson. Let's break down the details:

The Grand Rapids Michigan Temple will be a single-story edifice of approximately 20,000 square feet that will be built at 2400 Forest Hill Avenue in Grand Rapids on a 10.5-acre site. Detailed plans are still being developed, and the rendering will be released and a groundbreaking scheduled (either separately or at the same time) at a later date.

Given the fact that the square footage of this temple is exactly twice the size of the modular temples in Helena Montana, Casper Wyoming, and Elko Nevada, it occurred to me to wonder if the Church might expand that modular design to this temple. If that turns out to be the plan, it will be interesting to see how the larger modular components might work. And in that case, that temple could be built in 2.75-3.25 years at the most.

It will be interesting to see what happens there. In the meantime, I have updated my document showing the status of announced temples which have not yet had any information officially confirmed. In summary of that document, of the 72 currently-announced temples, there are 50 remaining for which we do not have official information. If any of you have any questions about that document, feel free to ask them here.

While I was preparing this update, the Newsroom provided a new home page for the latest temple updates, so that will be an important resource for all of us going forward. I was grateful for this update, despite the fact that it only pertained to a single temple. UPDATE: Third Quarter Temple Construction Progress

Hello again, everyone! With General Conference now less than 12 hours away, the third quarter of 2022 is almost in the history books. But before it completely passes away, I couldn't let it go without reporting on the latest temple construction updates. As has been customary for all such reports in the past, we will look back on that progress from the beginning of the year until now. 

So as a refresher, you can look back at where things stood as this year began, one day before the April General Conference, and at the rough mid-point of 2022. And as we conclude the third quarter of 2022, one last report shows where things stand now. So much has happened with temple construction thus far this year, and with General Conference weekend upon us, even more milestones are anticipated throughout the end of this year.

That includes the likely announcement of new temples this weekend. So, concerning temple construction developments, buckle up! It's going to be a wild ride. For my part, I continue to monitor all such updates and will bring the highlights to you all here through breaking news updates in new posts or progress updates on the comment threads of existing posts.
