BREAKING TEMPLE NEWS: 5 More Temples Will Move to Phase 3 on March 15

Hello again, everyone! This morning, the Church News noted status changes for 4 temples, with 2 previously-"paused" temples resuming operations, and with 2 others being "paused" in their reopening status due to COVID-19 conditions and local regulations. While I had intended just now to note those minor changes in the comment threads of my previous post (since those changes were not necessarily breaking news), as I was preparing to do so, the Church News happened to provide a breaking update on temple reopenings.

Those updates came through less than an hour ago. So let's break down the announcement: 2 weeks from today (on Monday March 15), 5 additional temples will transition to phase 3 of reopening, which allows all ordinances for the living in priority order, but also allows all proxy ordinances to be done on a limited scale by appointment. The 5 temples that will transition to phase 3 in two weeks include the first 3 in North America (Kona and Laie Hawaii and Cardston Alberta in Canada), the first one in Central America (San Salvador El Salvador), and 1 more in the Pacific (Papeete Tahiti).

With the announcement about the Papeete Tahiti Temple transitioning to phase 3, on March 15, 9 of the 10 temples in the Pacific will be in phase 3. The only Pacific Area temple not currently in any phase of operation is the Hamilton New Zealand Temple, which remains closed for renovation, and for which the open house and rededication is anticipated to be the first held later this year (likely towards the end of the third quarter of this year, or the beginning of the fourth quarter of this year). Time will tell how soon following its rededication the Hamilton temple will transition from phase 1 to phase 2, and then on to phase 3 with the other temples in the Pacific.

Having noted that, the other changes which were noted in the original announcement from the Church this morning (roughly 4 hours before the subsequent phase 3 announcement) are that the Guadalajara and Monterrey Mexico Temples will both resume their former phase 1 reopening status, which will allow the living husband-to-wife sealings where both are previously endowed, with limited guests in attendance. Meanwhile, due to local COVID-19 conditions and new governmental regulations, the Curitiba and Porto Alegre Brazil Temples, which had been in phase 2, will now pause operations.

The Church News has updated their temple status tracker, which lists the status of each temple, grouped by the geographical boundaries for each area of the Church under which each temple falls. The Church News further notes that, by March 15, there will be 19 temples in phase 3, 119 more in phase 2, 12 others in phase 1, 9 in a "paused" status due to local restrictions and regulations, and 1 still closed (Kyiv Ukraine, which has not reopened in any phase since the First Presidency announced the closure of all operating temples roughly 1 year ago).

The other 8 temples are closed for renovation, with 2 of those (Washington D.C. and Tokyo Japan) completed and awaiting their rededications. The same updates I reoprted here are also available through the Newsroom's official release and the corresponding reopening status list, which presents the temples in alphabetical order I am grateful to have learned of and been able to pass on these updates here. I continue to monitor all Church news and any additional temple updates, and will be sure to continue to pass those along as I learn about them.

That does it for now. Any and all comments are, as always, welcome and appreciated, on any post at any time, as long as such comments are made in accordance with the established guidelines. Thank you for the privilege of your time. If you enjoyed what you read here and would like to stay informed of newly added content, please feel free to subscribe. Until my next post, I wish each one of you all the best and pray that the Lord will bless you all in everything you do.

    1. As of today, the Church of Jesus Christ Temples site updated the status of the Mesa Arizona Temple:

      https://churchofjesuschristtemples.org/mesa-arizona-temple/

Based on that update, on the construction status page, the Mesa temple has been moved up to the same section as the Washington D.C. and Tokyo Japan Temples, indicating that the opening dates for that temple will also be announced once large public gatherings are deemed safe:

  2. Hello again, everyone! I have not posted a comment today before now because, within the last week or less, the COVID-19 vaccine parameters in Utah shifted to people with preexisting conditions (of which I have a few from the list of those that qualify), and I was able to get my first dosage of that vaccine today. After giving myself some time to just relax following my return home from that, I am now in a position to provide my first (and likely only) update on newly-reported Church news and temple developments. Let's get right into those updates.

First, the Newsroom has shared the following new reports, unique to that resource:

    https://newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org/article/elder-stevenson-byu-devotional-march-2021

Meanwhile, the following reports were uniquely and solely shared by the Church News:

In a subsequent comment, I will detail temple updates later today (assuming there are any to pass along). In the meantime, my thanks once again to you all.

    1. A new update on the status of th Saratoga Spring Utah Temple has been provided:

      https://churchofjesuschristtemples.org/saratoga-springs-utah-temple/

As you may notice from that update, the completion estimate for that temple has shifted down, from early-to-mid 2022 to nos being mid-2022.

Also, I had reported a few days ago that it appeared that the Mesa Arizona Temple was close enough to completion that that temple had moved to the section of temples for which rededication arrangements were pending, as a result of which, the estimate for its' completion had been removed. It appears that that has since changed, with the completion estimate restored, as you can see from the following page:

      https://churchofjesuschristtemples.org/mesa-arizona-temple/

That being said, I fully anticipate, based on the current status of that temple, that it could very well reach completion of its' renovation before I share my end-of-first-quarter temple construction progrss report for 2021, which I plan on doing late on the night of March 31. My thanks once again to you all.

    1. Hello again, everyone! I had a medical appointment earlier this afternoon, and en route home from that, my wife and I were stuck in traffic for around 3 hours, as a result of 2 major accidents that slowed traffic to a crawl most of the way. We actually only arrived home around 2 hours ago, and that’s why my first major report on Church news and temple updates for today has been delayed until now. The following articles from the Church News (with one linking to an LDS Living article, for which I am providing both links) speak for themselves, without much need for commentary on my part:

      https://www.thechurchnews.com/leaders-and-ministry/2021-03-04/president-oaks-missionaries-temple-square-mission-jesus-christ-testimony-priesthood-authority-atonement-lds-205767

    2. And following the announcement of 4 new mission leaders just 5 days ago, and with the previous set of biographies shared for new temple leaders exactly 1 week ago, biographies were shared for 8 more temple leaders today. As has been previously announced with prior sets of new temple leader biographies, the newest 8 couples whose biographies were featured today will begin their service in August of this year, roughly 3 months earlier than has traditionally been true. Here is the latest set of featured biographies:

      https://www.thechurchnews.com/callings/2021-03-04/temple-presidents-matrons-germany-netherlands-mexico-ghana-taiwan-costa-rica-205398

With 8 new temple presidents announced today, the total number of currently-operating temples I have left on my list of those that seem most likely to have a new president called is down to just 13, in addition to which I have 7 new temples which are almost definitely going to be completed within the next 15-18 months, and for which their first presidents may be called at some point this year. But there are an additional 7 which will almost certainly be completed within the next 18- 21 months, and any of those could have their first presidents called at some point this year, even if not immediately, in order to ensure that those temple presidents are ready and raring to go whenever those temples are dedicated. That may be an especially crucial priority for the Church because of the rapid way in which temple construction progress may be accelerated in the near term.

And regardless of how many new temple presidents are called this year, the 8 biographies shared today brings the total number of temples for which a new president has been announced thus far this year to a grand total of 48. Here is the link to the updated list:

      https://docs.google.com/document/d/1MpJO3ESKh0h0fvU93GcYOn1M6dIFmY7QnJ67sIeij_A/edit?usp=sharing

With the 8 newest biographies shared today, we see that the Church has called men and women who have rendered Church service in a wide range of capacities, callings, and assignments, serving both individually and as couples. Before I share relevant notes about the newest group of 8 presidents whose biographies were shared this evening, I wanted to note that further study on my part has shown that, unless otherwise specified, those new temple presidents who are currently serving in or have previously served in the presidencies of unidentified temples have rendered that service in the same temples for which they will now assume oversight.

Bearing that in mind, among the 8 whose biographies were featured tonight are: 1 current area seventy (Elder Felix A. Martinez from the Mexico Area, who will likely be released in General Conference next month); 4 current temple presidency counselors; 1 temple sealer who is a former stake patriarch and mission president; 1 current country regional Church History adviser and temple ordinance worker; and 1 current bishop who formerly served as an area seventy, mission president, and counselor in an MTC presidency.

And the Newsroom has shared the following additional report:

      https://newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org/article/san-jose-california-mission-covid-19

If there are any temple updates to pass along from earlier today, I will try to do so within the last remaining hour or so of this Thursday. Until my next comment, thanks again, all.

    1. The Church News has published the latest installment of "This Week on Social":

      https://www.thechurchnews.com/living-faith/2021-03-05/social-media-inside-look-leaders-young-women-devotionals-205983

This week's edition included content from the following apostles and female General Officers of the Church: President Henry B. Eyring, Second Counselor in the First Presidency; Acting President M. Russell Ballard and Elders David A. Bednar, Dale G. Renlund, Gerrit W. Gong, and Ulisses Soares of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles; Relief Society General President Sister Jean B. Bingham and her First Counselor, Sister Sharon Eubank; Primary General President Sister Joy D. Jones and her First Counselor, Sister Lisa L. Harkness; and the entire Young Women General Presidency (General President Sister Bonnie H. Cordon, and her respective First and Second Counselors, Sisters Michelle D. Craig and Becky Craven).

A couple of additional notes about those posts: Both President Ballard and Sister Eubank shared an invitation for young adults throughout North America on Sunday. Also, a couple of posts were featured from Sister Harkness.

Regarding the content from Sister Craven that was shared by the Church News, I wanted to more specifically note that multiple posts she wrote were shared this week, and that they all provided an inside look at aspects related to her general Church service. In particular, Sister Craven is one of two women who currently serve on the Priesthood and Family Executive Council (with the other being Relief Society General President Sister Jean B. Bingham). The othr members of that Council include Elders Quentin L. Cook (who is the chairman thereof) and Gerrit W. Gong of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, Elder Michael T. Ringwood, a General Authority Seventy currently serving as the Executive Director of the Priesthood and Family Department, and those General Authority Seventies who serve as Assistant Exeuctive Directors of that same department. However, in the photo showing the meeting of the Priesthood and Family Executive Council, Elder Ringwood is the only GA Seventy in the picture, likely because his assistants were participating remotely due to COVID-19 protocols that are in effect at Church headquarters.

My thanks once again to you all.

    2. Additional updates have been provided on the following temples:

      Quito Ecuador:
      https://churchofjesuschristtemples.org/quito-ecuador-temple/

      Praia Cabo Verde:
      https://churchofjesuschristtemples.org/praia-cabo-verde-temple/

      Bentonville Arkansas:
      https://churchofjesuschristtemples.org/bentonville-arkansas-temple/

      Salta Argentina:
      https://churchofjesuschristtemples.org/salta-argentina-temple/

With reference to the Salta Argentina Temple, full-scale construction has now begun on that temple, and its' completion is estimated to occur sometime during mid-2023, which puts that temple in the queue of those under construction between the Puebla Mexico and Taylorsville Utah Temples.

This means that, excluding the Rio de Janeiro Brazil and Winnipeg Manitoba Temples, which are completed and awaiting their open houses and dedications, there is now a total of 27 temples in the current construction queue, and the number of temples which had a groundbreaking near the end of last year but for which full-scale construction is still pending is now down to a total of 6.

My thanks once again to you all for your continued interest and ongoing support.

  5. Hello again, everyone! I commented a short while ago on the accelerated pace at which the Church has announced new temple and mission leaders this year. 2 days ago, 8 new temple leader biographies were published. And 6 days ago, the Church News published the biographies for 4 new mission presidents.

Fast forward to today, when 2 new biographies for mission leaders were published:

    https://www.thechurchnews.com/callings/2021-03-06/new-mission-presidents-companions-idaho-brazil-205619

With these two biographies having been published, unlss I am mistaken, that now leave just 4 missions for which, in the Church's announcement of new mission presidents, were listed as yet-to-be-announced (those remaining four missions are: Japan Fukuoka, Utah Layton, Brazil Campinas, and Chile Santiago East). With reference to the Brazil Campinas Mission, that is the one mission for which neither a new president nor a TBA (to be announced) was noted among the original list of new mission presidents. The information I've received on that mission is that the current president has served for 3 years, so it will be interesting to see what happens there in terms of whether a change occurs.

In the meantime, in terms of the two new mission leadership couples whose biographies were shared today, all four, both in separate capacities and as the two married couples, have rendered extensive Church service over the years. In particular relation to the new mission presidents, one is currently a stake presidency counselor, and the other is a stake president and temple ordinance worker.

I was grateful to hear about this latest announcement and to pass it along to you all here. In the meantime, I believe I will have some temple updates to pass along very shortly, including word of at least one other temple which has had full-scale preliminary construction efforts begin. I will be back shortly with all such updates. For now, my thanks once again to you all.

    1. Before I get to the temple updates to which I referred above, apparently, while I was typing my comment above about the new mission presidents whose biographies were shared, the Church News also published the text of the "Spoken Word" message prepared for this weekend's hybrid "Music & the Spoken Word" broadcast, which will utilize previous performances from the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square with the new message added. Here is the text of that message:

      https://www.thechurchnews.com/living-faith/2021-03-06/music-and-the-spoken-word-gratitude-thankfulness-appreciation-205918

Unless any other updates come in from the Church News or the Newsroom between now and then, my next comment will focus on the temple updates I mentioned above. In the meantime, my thanks once again to you all.

    2. As it turns out, I have only one new temple update to provide, relating to the Okinawa Japan Temple:

      https://churchofjesuschristtemples.org/okinawa-japan-temple/

Full-scale construction efforts have begun on that temple, which, due to its' size, is anticipated to be completed sometime during early 2023. With 2 temples in the current queue completed and awaiting the announcement of revised opening dates, the update on the Okinawa Japan Temple means that 28 temples are now under construction, and that the number of temples for which full-scale construction is still pending is now down to 5.

Within the last few weeks, at least 3 or 4 temples have seen full-scale efforts begin. So with 4 weeks remaining before General Conference, if all goes well, it seems possible that most (if not all) of the remaining 5 temples could have full-scale construction begin before General Conference weekend rolls around.

I would add here that I also think there is a high likelihood that the Church could announce groundbreaking arrangements for anywhere from 1 to 4 temples, with those groundbreakings taking place in the 4-6 weeks following General Conference. Although no such announcements have been made yet, I fully anticipate that this year will be another big one for temple groundbreakings, construction milestons, and the announcement of new temples. As I also mentioned previously, I am reasonably certain that the number of new temples which will be announced in April will be in the double-digits.

One other note may be helpful to you all. Here is an overview of the anticipated completion order for temples anticipated to have construction conclude some time in 2023 and 2024:

Early 2023: Auckland New Zealand, Moses Lake Washington, and Okinawa Japan
      Early-to-mid 2023: Puebla Mexico
Mid-2023: Salta Argentina and Taylorsville Utah
Mid-to-late 2023: Alabang Philippines and Red Cliffs Utah
      Late 2023: Davao Philippines
Late 2023-early 2024: San Pedro Sula Honduras.

I have no doubt the existing queue will see many changes ahead, especially as those temples with full-scale construction pending are able to have construction commence. And the queue may also shift based on the progress (or the lack tehreof) on all temples in any position in that queue.

I am monitoring all of those updates on an ongoing basis, and will be sure to pass them along to you all here as I become aware of them. For now, my thanks once again to you all.

  6. Got some other information relating to temples/

While there is no official date for the Saratoga Springs temple to be completed, some say that a target date is about spring of 2022 which is next year, probably a summer opening is more likely.

For temple predictions, the temples announced, with all operating or being renovated, when complete will place a temple within a three hour drive from a temple, that is based on local driving or other land/sea travel conditions. That was in Elder Stevenson's BYU address last week.

    1. Jim Anderson, thanks for weighing in here on these subjects. In a recent Church News interview, Elder Bednar said that, despite COVID-19 conditions which have led to some delays, most temples under construction or undrgoing renovation are still on track to be completed in the originally-planned time frames.

But Elder Bednar also acknowledged that the COVID-19 pandemic will likely lead to necessary adjustments in reopening arrangements. Current projects from national health experts is that international travel for those in the vulnerable demographic (which, by definition, would include all current apostles) may not be safe until early fall of this year (September or October).

With that in mind, it seems likely that the length of each temple's open house and dedication/rededication may be extended, and that it may be September or October of this year before any temple dedications or rededications are able to be held.

And since President Nelson has also delegated temple dedications or rededications to his fellow apostles, even with adjustments for temple open houses and dedications/rededications, we could see a scenario where 2 or more temple dedications or rededications are held in the same general time-frame.

So, the big question is, how many temples that are, have ben, or will be completed this year, may not be able to have their reopenings next year? And how long will COVID-19 delays impact temple open houses and dedications/rededications? It will be interesting to see what happens with the Saratoga Springs Utah Temple. Travel restrictions won't impact that temple's dedication, but could the likely/potential delay of other dedications or rededications lead to a delay in the timing of the dedication of that temple? That's a harder question to answer. And it may be later this year before we know for certain how soon COVID-19 won't have an impact on temple open houses and dedications or rededications.

That being said, what you noted about Utah County's newest temple does match up with what I've been hearing elsewhere in terms of its' completion. Above and beyond that, I was similarly impressed with Elder Stevenson's statement about the percentage of people that will be within 3 hours of a temple once all those currently announced, under construction, or undergoing renovation are completed. That's progress, but I don't think the Church will stop there. I thought I remembered hearing that the goal was to have every Church member worldwide within 2 hours one-way between them and their assigned temple. So there's still more to be done. And that's partly why I've said I anticipate a double-digit number of temples to be announced next month in General Conference. It will be interesting to see temple construction as it continues to unfold. In the meantime, James Anderson, thanks for taking time to comment. I always appreciate hearing from you.

  7. Hello again, everyone! On this Sabbath day, I am a little late in bringing you all a Church News update. After participating in my virtual Church meetings, I was working on the finihsing touches of a new project. I've been asked to put together a monthly newsletter for the Elders' Quorum in my ward, including the major updates I have provided here on any given month. So finalizing the first edition of that newsletter needed to be a priority.

With that noted, I wanted to mention here that the Church News provided their weekly edition of "In Case You Missed It" this morning, highlighting the top 9 developments that were covered this week:

    https://www.thechurchnews.com/leaders-and-ministry/2021-03-07/in-case-you-missed-it-president-oaks-on-what-makes-the-church-distinct-elder-holland-emphasizes-institute-plus-7-more-stories-206021

The Church News also covered remarks given by Elder Jeffrey R. Holland of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles to young adults in the Europe, Europe East, and Africa areas of the Church:

    https://www.thechurchnews.com/leaders-and-ministry/2021-03-07/elder-holland-young-adult-devotional-europe-africa-205996

With the devotional focused on the subject of institute, Elder Holland (the senior member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles serving on the Church Board of Education) also led a panel discussion, which included two other general Church leaders who also serve on the Church Board of Education: Presiding Bishop Gerald Causse and Young Women General President Sister Bonnie H. Cordon. Brother Chad H. Webb, the administrator of Seminaries and Institutes of Relgion, also particpated in the panel discussion.

My thanks once again to you all.

  8. Hello again, everyone! The Church News and the Newsroom have shared the latest updates on the phased reopening of temples:

    https://www.thechurchnews.com/temples/2021-03-08/lds-temples-open-worldwide-phased-reopening-183918

    https://www.thechurchnews.com/temples/2021-03-08/temple-reopening-status-tracker-worldwide-199279

    https://newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org/article/first-presidency-limited-reopening-temples

The changes this week note that the Guadalajara and Monterey Mexico Temples will transition from phase 1, which only allows living husband-to-wife sealings where both are previously endowed, to phase 2, allowing the performance of all living ordinances, with living husband-to-wife sealings prioritized first, then all living ordinances for those who are preparing to be sealed; then all living ordinances for those who departed for the mission field prior to being able to receive their own ordinances; then to those preparing to depart for the mission field; then to all those who may desire to receive their own endowment for any other reason.

Meanwhile, two temples each in Peru (Arequipa and Trujillo) and England (London and Preston) will resume phase 2 operations following short periods where all four temples had to pause their reopening. Additionally, due to COVID-19 conditions, the Concepcion Chile Temple will shift to a "paused" status.

More Church mews updates will follow shortly. For now, my thanks once again to you all.

  10. Hello again, everyone! With the internet service restored to my area late last night, and following my return from another extensive trip for a medical appointment, I am pleased to finally bring you all word of the latest Church news updates and temple developments. First, and most surprisingly, the Church News has provided the biographies for 4 additional new temple leaders, who will each begin serving in currently-operating temples in August of this year:

    https://www.thechurchnews.com/callings/2021-03-11/new-temple-presidents-matrons-japan-peru-idaho-saskatchewan-206032

Each of the four new couples, individually and together, have filled a wide variety of assignments in the Church, but the following notes may be of interest to you all: 1, who formerly served as an area seventy, is currently a branch presidency counselor and temple ordinance worker; 2 are currently counselors in the presidencies of the same temples for which they will assume oversight; and 1 is a bishopric counselor and temple ordinance worker.

I have also updated my list of temples for which a new president has been or may yet be called this year:

    https://docs.google.com/document/d/1MpJO3ESKh0h0fvU93GcYOn1M6dIFmY7QnJ67sIeij_A/edit?usp=sharing

That list now includes the 9 remaining currently-operating temples for which I am anticipating the announcement of new leadership, 7 new temples almost certain to be dedicated by the end of 2022, and 7 others which could see their first presidents called within the next year or less if construction and completion of each of those temples remain on track. The number of temples for which the Church has announced a new president thus far has now risen to 52.

The Newsroom and the Church News have covered new resources the Church has made available for individuals with disabilities:

    https://newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org/article/churchs-online-resources-aim-to-help-individuals-with-disabilities

    https://www.thechurchnews.com/members/2021-03-11/disabilities-church-resources-parents-caregivers-202046

And the Newsroom has shared more information about the upcoming April 2021 General Conference:

    https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/events/april-2021-general-conference?lang=eng
The Newsroom notes specifically that it is the “Easter 2021 General Conference”, so with that specific note in mind, although the April General Conferences in 2019 and 2020 followed a more standardized pattern, the format of the Sunday Morning Session this go-round may be more akin to the format used in April 2018, which was the last time that the conference coincided with Easter Sunday. I’d welcome any thoughts from any of you on that particular idea.

Additionally, the Church News has provided two other reports as well:

    https://www.thechurchnews.com/living-faith/2021-03-11/dwyane-wade-stylist-baptized-calyann-barnett-book-of-mormon-206281

My thanks once again to you all.

In addition to my life-long love for the subjects which I cover in the posts of this blog, I have long held the belief that we can disagree without becoming disagreeable. Differences of opinion are natural, while being disagreeable in expressing those differences is not. And in that sense, I have no desire to close the door on anyone who earnestly desires to contribute to the ongoing dialogue on subjects covered in the posts on this blog.

At the same time, however, I recognize that we live in a time when incivility, discourtesy, unkindness, and even cyber-bullying has regrettably become part of online interactions. With that in mind, while anyone who wishes can comment on anything if they choose to do so, I hereby reserve the right to immediately delete any comments which are critical, unkind, lack civility, or promote prodcuts, services, and values contrary to either the Church, or to the rules of online etiquette.

I'd also like to remind all who comment here that I try to respond personally to each individual comment as I feel is appropriate. Such replies are not meant to end the conversation, but to acknowledge earnest feedback as it is submitted.

And in order to better preserve the spirit and pure intentions for which this blog was established, I also hereby request that anyone not commenting with a regular user name (particularly those whose comments appear under the "Unknown" or "Anonymous" monikers, give the rest of us a name to work with in addressing any replies. If such individuals do not wish to disclose their actual given names, a pseudonym or nickname would suffice.

Any comments made by individuals who opt to not give a name by which they can ber identified may, depending on the substance and tone of such comments, be subject to deletion as well. I would respectfully ask that all of us do all we can to keep the dialogue positive, polite, and without malice or ill-will. May the Lord bless us all in our discussion of these important matters.
