Tribute to Elder David A. Bednar, Who Observes His 70th Birthday Today

Hello again, everyone! Given that today is June 15, I wanted to take an opportunity to pay tribute to Elder David A. Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, who is marking his 70th birthday today. He thus becomes the tenth of our fifteen current apostles who are 70 or older. We now have 2 apostolic nonagenarians, with a third (President Oaks) set to join that group in a couple of months, 3 other octogenarians, and, given Elder Bednar's birthday, we now have 4 septuagenarian apostles.

Having noted that, let's get into some details about the 7 decades of Elder Bednar's life thus far. David Allan Bednar was born in Oakland California on this day in 1952 to Anthony George and Lavina Whitney Bednar. His mother came from a long line of Latter-day Saint ancestors, but his father was not a member of the Church. Despite not having a formal Church membership, Anthony Bednar fully supported the rest of his family in their Church membership, and he would often step in and participate in meetings and Church activities, including various service projects, whereby he was in essence functioning in the same supportive way as other Church members did, but as one who was not a Church member. Young David would often ask Anthony when he would be baptized, to which his father replied that he would do so when he felt it was right.

Elder Bednar served a mission in southern Germany, during which time, then-Elder Boyd K. Packer visited his mission, and was advised that to get through the necessary border security, he would need money. The future President Packer would later recount in General Conference that a young missionary provided him with the money he needed, and later revealed that Elder Bednar had been that missionary. Elder Bednar attended BYU-Provo, where he earned a bachelor's degree in communication and a master's in organizational communication. He went on to earn a doctoral degree in organizational behavior from the prestigious Purdue University.

He met Susan Kae Robinson at an activity for young adults. He recounts that they were playing flag football and that he threw a pass, which she caught. Susan would later note that, incidentally, that was the only time she could remember catching a pass. That experience left a positive impression on both of them, and the two started dating not long afterward. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple on March 20, 1975, and would go on to raise 3 sons together. One major highlight of Elder Bednar's life came long after his marriage. Anthony called his son one day and asked, "Would you be free on (and he named a near-future date)? I would like you to come and baptize me." He was able to baptize and confirm his father, and also ordained him to the priesthood.

He spent his vocational career as an educator at several secondary schools. For four years (1980-1984), he was an assistant professor of management at what was then the College of Business Administration at the University of Arkansas. He spent the next two years as an assistant professor at Texas Tech University, after which he returned to Arkansas, where he served first as the Associate Dean for Graduate Studies, then as the Director of the Management Decision-Making Lab. During this time, he was recognized as being an outstanding educator through the receipt of many prestigious awards and honors.

He also had a few ecclesiastical responsibilities within the Church at around the same time. He spent several months as a bishop, then went on to serve first as the president of what was then the Fort Smith Arkansas Stake, then as the first president of the newly-established Rogers Arkansas Stake. During the final months of his service as a stake president, he was called to serve as a regional representative. In 1997, he was among the first men called to serve in the new position of area seventy. That same year, he was also called by the Church Board of Education to serve as president of Ricks College. His tenure there spanned from 1997-2004, during which time he led the transition of that college to BYU-Idaho. In October 2004, as a result of the apostolic vacancies which resulted from the July deaths of Elders Neal A. Maxwell and David B. Haight (which occurred 10 days apart), Church President Gordon B. Hinckley announced that the vacancies would be filled by Elders Dieter F. Uchtdorf and David A. Bednar.

At the time of his call to the apostleship, Elder Bednar, who was 52 at that time, was the youngest apostle to have been called since then-Elder Dallin H. Oaks (who had been called to the apostleship in 1984 Although he immediately commenced his service in the apostleship, he also continued to serve as president of BYU-Idaho for several weeks before the appointment of an interim president. Elder Bednar's tenure as an educator has molded how he speaks and ministers as an apostle. One of his common traditions, as he speaks at General Conference, is to invite the Holy Ghost to bless him and the rest of us as we listen to his remarks.

Since his October 2004 call to the apostleship, he has given 36 General Conference addresses, which are always well crafted and insightful, and are well worthy of review by all of us. He is currently the fourth-most senior member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles (which, including the current members of the First Presidency, makes him the seventh in apostolic seniority), and is still among the younger apostles, being the fifth-youngest both among the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and all 15 ordained apostles as well. While I have never had the honor of personally meeting him, from the moment his apostolic call was first announced and onward since then, I have had a testimony that his apostolic call has been inspired and directed by the Lord, which I reiterate to you all today.

Given his relatively younger age in comparison to both the six apostles senior to him, and four of the eight apostles who are junior to him, I fully believe it is likely that Elder Bednar may serve as Church President. someday That, of course, will be up to the Lord’s will and the health and longevity of Presidents Nelson, Oaks, Eyring, and Ballard, and that of Elders Holland and Uchtdorf. And I want to make it very clear that such a prospect is merely my personal opinion and not anything I can attribute to anyone else. That being said, some of you will no doubt notice that one of the labels attached to this post is "Temple Construction Update". That may warrant additional context from me.

Generally, when a new president of the Church is ordained, he has the prophetic prerogative to make assignment changes for his fellow apostles. Before the passing of President Thomas S. Monson, Elder Quentin L. Cook was serving as the Chairman of the Temple and Family History Executive Council. Within a couple of months after President Nelson's ordination and setting apart as Church President, Elder Cook was reassigned as the Chairman of the Priesthood and Family Executive Council, with Elder Bednar succeeding his immediate apostolic junior and seatmate as the Chairman of the Church's and Family History Executive Council. While Elder Bednar has served in that capacity, President Nelson has announced an unprecedented 100 new temples, so there has been a lot for that council to consider throughout the last several years, which will likely continue to be true for the foreseeable future.

I am grateful to have been able to provide this tribute to Elder Bednar as he marks his 69th birthday today. I continue to monitor all Church news updates and temple developments and will be sure to bring you word of those reports as I receive them. In the meantime, that does it for now. All comments are, as always, welcome and appreciated, on any post at any time, as long as the offered feedback is made per the established guidelines. Thank you for the privilege of your time. I hope any of you who would like to share anything will take your opportunity to “sound off” in the comments below. Until my next post, I wish each one of you all the best and pray that the Lord will bless you all in everything you do.

  1. Hello again, everyone! Just a few minutes ago, the Church News shared 9 quotes from Elder Bednar in honor of his birthday:

    https://www.thechurchnews.com/leaders-and-ministry/2022-06-15/elder-bednar-70th-birthday-quotes-from-past-year-257334

Additionally, as reported by both the Newsroom and the Church News, Sister Camille N. Johnson, the ougoing Primary General President and incoming Relief Society General President shared her thoughts in a new video as part of the ongoing series: "How I #HearHim":

    https://newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org/article/president-camille-n-johnson-says-we-can-hearhim-in-diverse-unique-ways

    https://www.thechurchnews.com/living-faith/2022-06-15/president-johnson-hear-him-video-257259

The Newsroom linked to a blog post authored by Sister Johnson, which expands on what she shared in the video:

And in view of today being June 15, the open houses for the Praia Cabo Verde and Washington D.C. Temples officially wrapped up on Saturday. The Newsroom has shared the following report on the former temple, which hosted more than 10,000 visitors in its' 3-week open house:

    https://news-uk.churchofjesuschrist.org/article/more-than-ten-thousand-visitors-at-praia-cabo-verde-temple

And the Church News has shared a report on how the recent severe flooding at Yellowstone National Park has impacted Church members:

    1. Hello again, everyone! As some of you might recall, I'd previously mentioned in the threads of the next post that the Yorba Linda California Temple groundbreaking is set to occur at 11:00 AM this Saturday, but that by contrast, the Church's webcast page for temple groundbreakings showed that the Smithfield Utah Temple groundbreaking broadcast would span 300 minutes (5 hours) begining at 7:00 AM. Based on that, I surmised that the time for the groundbreaking would either be at 10:00 AM or 11:00 AM. Then, this morning, I was nosing around Facebook, and discovered the following photograph:

      https://m.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=781255626632472&id=100042441262590&set=a.781255673299134

The photo in question appears to be a program for the groundbreaking, or at very least a note about it, which shows that the groundbreaking for the Smithfield Utah Temple will be held at 10:00 AM. So with Smithfield at 10:00 AM and Yorba Linda at 11:00 AM, both groundbreakings will have wrapped up by no later than 12:30 PM, which will push two more temples up the queue from "Groundbreaking Scheduled" to "Under Construction". Just wanted to pass that along, FWIW. My thanks once again to you all.

    2. The Church News shared an updated version of a previous report earlier today as well:

    3. Hello again, everyone! The Church News has shared the following 4 reports which speak for themselves:

      https://www.thechurchnews.com/global/2022-06-16/rootstech-2023-virtual-and-in-person-event-257783

      https://www.thechurchnews.com/living-faith/2022-06-16/st-george-utah-temple-visitors-center-to-host-stories-and-music-of-pioneers-257802

Also, while there are no new temple construction updates, it seems safe to assume that Elders Neil L. Andersen and Gerrit W. Gong are likely already in Praia Cape Verde and Hong Kong China respectively for the dedication of the temple in the former city and the rededication of the temple in the latter.

If my calculations are correct, assuming the final rededicatory session for the Hong Kong China Temple wraps up at around 5:00 PM Sunday, that will be 3:00 AM Sunday here in Utah. And assuming that the final dedicatory session for the Praia Cape Verde Temple wraps up around 5:00 PM Sunday as well, that will be 12:00 PM Sunday here in Utah.

Hope this information is helpful to all who read it.

    8. The latest edition of "This Week on Social" was what I'd call "apostle-lite", meaning that it only featured posts from President Henry B. Eyring, First Counselor in the First Presidency, and Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. I am assuming the Church News will do a special "This Fathers' Day on Social", which could explain what we're seeing here:

      https://www.thechurchnews.com/living-faith/2022-06-17/this-week-on-social-hear-him-faith-fathers-day-savior-258243

Aside from President Eyring and Elder Uchtdorf, the remaining posts featured content from the following General Officers: Sister Sharon Eubank, the outgoing First Counselor in the Relief Society General Presidency; outgoing Primary General President and incoming Relief Society General President Sister Camille N. Johnson; Sisters Michelle D. Craig and Rebecca L. "Becky" Craven, the respective First and Second Counselors in the Young Women General Presidency; Sister Amy A. Wright, the outgoing Second Counselor and incoming First Counselor in the Primary General Presidency; and Brother Milton Camargo, First Counselor in the Sunday School General Presidency.

    10. Hello again, everyone! The groundbreaking for the Smithfield Utah Temple concluded a short time ago, and the groundbreaking for the Yorba Linda California Temple will be underway in the next 10 minutes or so. My wife's been commuting to and from Lehi to help her dad with his health challenges, and she let me know a short time ago that he passed away this morning after being transferred to hospice care just last night. I've not been able to go with her when she's gone to Lehi thanks to ongoing personal health issues and needing to be here with our cats, but I imagine that in the week ahead, they'll be planning and holding the funeral. My ability to do regular reports may consequently be impacted during that time, so I wanted to pass that along to you all now. For now, thanks again, everyone!

    13. Anonymous, thank you very much for your kind expression. To whom might I offer thanks for that? Chris, we are as well as can be expected. Amy's been splitting her time between here in Orem and Lehi to take care of her dad. I've had recent health issues that have kept me homebound for the last few weeks, and have been holding down the fort here at home as a result. We will take things one day at a time. In the meantime, thanks again to you both for your kind expressions of sympathy. They are appreciated.

    1. Scott, thank you. Things have been crazy for us lately, with Amy dividing her time as best she can between here in Orem and Lehi. Her dad's health situation has been a source of frustration and grief for her. So although this is a sad outcome, not one we had hoped for, we take comfort in knowing that this is what was best for him. He'd been active all his life, and it was difficult to see him struggle. We'll take things one day at a time. Thanks for your well-wishes. I am similarly hoping that, with the groundbreakings for the Smithfield Utah and Yorba Linda California Temples done today, and with the rededication of the Hong Kong China Temple and the dedication of the Praia Cape Verde Temple set to occur tomorrow, there will be major temple news coming down the pike. Thanks again for your well-wishes. They are appreciated.

  3. Hello again, everyone! As I mentioned in a couple of subthreads above this comment, my wife has been alternating between being at home here with me in Orem and being in Lehi as the need has arisen to take care of her dad. In view of ongoing health issues and the fact that there are things needing to be done at home, including the primary care of our two cats and the household chores, my wife has been in Lehi since Thursday. She may be back either later today, but might also only return tomorrow or Monday. So as time and circumstances allow until her return, I will be trying to provide sporadic updates on Church news and temple developments.

That being said, the groundbreaking for the Yorba Linda California Temple also took place as scheduled this morning, Given the time difference between Utah and Hong Kong, the first of 3 rededicatory sessions for the Hong Kong China Temple (which are set to be held at 9:00 AM, noon, and 3:00 PM Hong Kong time Sunday) will get underway in less than 4 hours, and the final session (likely concluding at around 5:00 PM Sunday Hong Kong time) will conclude at around 3:00 AM Sunday here in Utah. As we also know, the Praia Cape Verde Temple dedicatory sessions will be held at the same times Cape Verde time, so, assuming a wrap-up of the final session occurs at 5:00 PM Praia time tomorrow, that will be just past 12:00 PM tomorrow here in Utah.

When reports of the two groundbreakings, the dedication, and the rededication are available, I will pass them along if I am able to do so. In the meantime, here are some Church News updates which speak for themselves:

    https://www.thechurchnews.com/temples/2022-06-18/president-hinckley-elder-nelson-2004-visit-to-cabo-verde-praia-cape-verde-temple-258374

    https://www.thechurchnews.com/living-faith/2022-06-18/music-and-the-spoken-word-a-sacred-holy-calling-fathers-day-258257

As I mentioned at the start of this comment, while I do have household tasks to handle today and will also keep myself available to my wife when she calls and/or comes home, in between now and then, I will also do my best to keep an eye out for any updates and will pass those along. Depending on what the viewing and funeral arrangements are, that will likely impact reports here in the next week or so. But if , when I can, I am committed to continuing these reports here. During the last 7 years when my health has tanked and kept me homebound, providing content here has always been a welcome reprieve from the stresses of the day. That will continue to be the case going forward. But I am always mindful of personal circumstances, and have stepped back in the past for a time when that has been needed, which I will also continue to do. In the meantime, my thanks once again, as always, to you all for your readership and friendship, which is a choice blessing to me under any circumstance.

    3. I had mentioned earlier that the Newsroom reports of the groundbreakings for the newest temples in California and Utah were published. It appears that the Church News covered both events not long after:

      https://www.thechurchnews.com/temples/2022-06-18/smithfield-utah-temple-groundbreaking-elder-cook-stevenson-cache-valley-roots-258417

      https://www.thechurchnews.com/temples/2022-06-18/yorba-linda-california-temple-groundbreaking-elder-bragg-258421

Also, since it is now nearing 4:00 PM Sunday in Hong Kong China, the last of the rededicatory sessions for that temple are probably about halfway done. And since it is nearing 7:00 AM in Praia Cape Verde, the first dedicatory session for the Church's temple in that city will be underway in just about 3 hours from now. I will carry those reports as soon as they are made available, which I assume will be sometime tomorrow. I also anticipate a Fathers' Day edition of "This Week on Social". Stay tuned for all such updates as circumstances permit me to provide them. In the meantime, my thanks once again to you all.

    1. And it has been a big day for temples, as the Hong Kong China Temple was rededicated by Elder Gerrit W. Gong today, while the Praia Cape Verde Temple was dedicated by Elder Neil L. Andersen. As I’ve previously mentioned, the Church has apparently opted to keep the rededication of the Hong Kong temple more low key, so I don’t know whether there will be any Newsroom or Church News reports on that. But a report on the dedication of the Praia Cape Verde Temple was provided via the Cape Verde Newsroom page:

      https://noticias-cv.aigrejadejesuscristo.org/artigo/templo-de-praia-cabo-verde-dedicado-pelo-elder-neil-l-andersen

That temple now becomes the 173rd operating temple of the Church. I’ve mentioned in the past that the Church seems on track to have at least 300 temples operating by the 200th anniversary of the Church’s reestablishment (Saturday April 6, 20230). With 173 temples in operation, that leaves 127 for the Church to dedicate in the 7.8 years between today and that date. That can be done as long as an average of 16.28 temples are dedicated each year between now and then.

By the end of this year, anywhere from 5-8 additional temples are anticipated to be dedicated, and a minimum of 12 others could similarly be dedicated by the end of next June. With the Church Temples site’s latest completion estimates, the Church could dedicate its’ 200th operating temple either just before or shortly after the April 2024 General Conference, and with a veritable host of almost 5 dozen others already announced, the Church could easily reach (if not exceed) 300 operating temples by the date of its’ bicentennial General Conference.

    2. There will be much to look forward to in the days ahead, including my second-quarter review of temple construction progress for this year, which will be preset to publish here on June 30. Having shared these updates, on a personal note, my father-in-law’s funeral is set for a week from tomorrow. And, per the provisions of his will, we have inherited his house in Lehi. We will probably initiate what is anticipated to be a drawn-out process of gradual relocation from here in Orem to our new place later this week.

I will be taking whatever time is needed to focus on that in the coming weeks, but am looking forward to continuing to cover the latest Church news reports and temple updates as that process gets underway. We’re very much playing everything by ear for now and will take things one day at a time. Your ongoing support and readership is always appreciated. My thanks once again to you all.

    4. The Church News has published the text of the prayer offered by Elder Neil L. Andersen this Sunday to dedicate the Praia Cape Verde Temple:

      https://www.thechurchnews.com/temples/2022-06-21/praia-cape-verde-temple-dedicatory-prayer-elder-andersen-258709

I don't know if, when, or how soon the text of the rededicatory prayer for the Hong Kong China Temple might be released, but I will keep my eyes open for that. In the meantime, with my wife having spent the bulk of the last few days in Lehi, she came home and will be here the bulk of the day. I will be doing whatever I can to make the most of her time here before she gets back, so the reports may be delayed or sporadic as a result. My thanks once again to you all.

That is confirmed along with other details about the planned curriculum for next year. In Elders' Quorum and Relief Society, members will continue to discuss talks from the most recent General Conference. My thanks once again to you all.

    13. I just now noticed an update I missed: In the Church's Official Communications Library earlier this month, a notice from the Finance and Records Division of the Office of the Presiding Bishopric noted changes to donation slips, including merging many of the General Funds into two separate categories, one for the worldwide Church, which will be used at the discretion of the Council on the Disposition of the Tithes, and the other to help meet local needs at the discretion of ward and stake leaders. My thanks once again to you all.

In addition to my life-long love for the subjects which I cover in the posts of this blog, I have long held the belief that we can disagree without becoming disagreeable. Differences of opinion are natural, while being disagreeable in expressing those differences is not. And in that sense, I have no desire to close the door on anyone who earnestly desires to contribute to the ongoing dialogue on subjects covered in the posts on this blog.

At the same time, however, I recognize that we live in a time when incivility, discourtesy, unkindness, and even cyber-bullying has regrettably become part of online interactions. With that in mind, while anyone who wishes can comment on anything if they choose to do so, I hereby reserve the right to immediately delete any comments which are critical, unkind, lack civility, or promote prodcuts, services, and values contrary to either the Church, or to the rules of online etiquette.

I'd also like to remind all who comment here that I try to respond personally to each individual comment as I feel is appropriate. Such replies are not meant to end the conversation, but to acknowledge earnest feedback as it is submitted.

And in order to better preserve the spirit and pure intentions for which this blog was established, I also hereby request that anyone not commenting with a regular user name (particularly those whose comments appear under the "Unknown" or "Anonymous" monikers, give the rest of us a name to work with in addressing any replies. If such individuals do not wish to disclose their actual given names, a pseudonym or nickname would suffice.

Any comments made by individuals who opt to not give a name by which they can ber identified may, depending on the substance and tone of such comments, be subject to deletion as well. I would respectfully ask that all of us do all we can to keep the dialogue positive, polite, and without malice or ill-will. May the Lord bless us all in our discussion of these important matters.
