BREAKING NEWS: First Presidency's Christmas Devotional Speakers Announced in Advance for the First Time

Hello again, everyone! For the first time in the 8 years since the format changed, the speaking lineup for Sunday's First Presidency's Christmas Devotional has been officially confirmed in advance. Speakers will include President Henry B. Eyring, Second Counselor in the First Presidency; Elder Dale G. Renlund of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, and Sister Michelle D. Craig, First Counselor in the Young Women General Presidency. I will cover that devotional in some way on Sunday. In the meantime, my thanks once again to you all.

  1. Hello again, eeryone! Quick personal note here: Late yesterday, following an endoscopy the previous day, I was having some balance issues and took a bit of a tumble. I will be okay, but it is possible I may have a mnior injury on my left hand, which I've arranged to check on with my doctor on Monday. The nature of the injiury is likely minor, but it may impact my typical ability to carry developments here. Until Monday, I will likely confine my reports to a more limited sclae this weekend that focuses on content in the comments. Having noted that, Church spokesman Sam Penrod (who formerly served as a religious reporter for KSL) has reported that another missionary is in serious but stable condition as the result of an attack in a Church buklding, where the missionary and two others were teaching a group of investigators when their group was confronted by an armed gunman:

Last night, round abbout the time I injured my hand, the latest edition of "This Week on Social" was provided:

I will let you read for yourselves which leaders were featured this week. Here are three other new Church News reports:

  2. In regards to the announcement of the Hawaii Laie Mission I noticed that it was listed as the 408th mission. I looked at my notes and only had 406. I don't know if you had the same. After some checking on LCR I found the Pakistan Service Mission created earlier this year, but no leadership is listed as of yet. Have you heard anything about this mission?

    1. Scott, thanks for the inquiry. Christopher Duerig, a regular commenter on the Church Growth Blog, mentioned the creation of 3 new missions on a recent thread. For whatever his reasons, Christopher tends to delete new comments he's made after they've been up for a few days. The Pakistan Mission was one he referenced in his recent comment about the new missions established this year. I believe he also mentioned two others, one of which was the Tonga one, which was a one-year spli. Pakistan waws another service missioon he mentioned that shows up on the classic LDS maps:

That link above does look weird, but it will show the general area served by this new misision. Hope that information is helpful to you.

  3. Hello again, everyone! On this Sabbath Day, the Church News has published the following two new reports:

    https://www.thechurchnews.com/callings/2021-12-05/8-new-stake-presidents-called-in-brazil-texas-australia-honduras-235236

    https://www.thechurchnews.com/members/2021-12-05/youth-from-around-the-world-narrate-book-of-mormon-234847

Additionally, a new report shared last night by the Church Temples site indicates that Elder Larry S. Kacher, a General Authority Seventy who serves as First Counselor in the Africa Westa Area Presidency, recently paid a visit with other Church leaders from Ghana to the king of the nation of Ghana. During that meeting, the king was presented a copy of his family history and also a photograph that apparently shows the exterior rendering for the Kumasi Ghana Temple. The King expressed gratitude for both gifts, saying it was important to him to know his family history, and thanking the Church for planning to build a beautiful temple in Kumasi:

Now, I want to be very clear that the Church has not yet publicly released that rendering, or any information about the site location. But since the rendering was presented to His Majesty the King of Ghana, my assumption is that it will likely be publicly released at some point this week. And if that turns out to be the case, then the Kumasi Ghana Temple might also have a groundbreaking set soon. My thanks once again to you all.

In addition to my life-long love for the subjects which I cover in the posts of this blog, I have long held the belief that we can disagree without becoming disagreeable. Differences of opinion are natural, while being disagreeable in expressing those differences is not. And in that sense, I have no desire to close the door on anyone who earnestly desires to contribute to the ongoing dialogue on subjects covered in the posts on this blog.

At the same time, however, I recognize that we live in a time when incivility, discourtesy, unkindness, and even cyber-bullying has regrettably become part of online interactions. With that in mind, while anyone who wishes can comment on anything if they choose to do so, I hereby reserve the right to immediately delete any comments which are critical, unkind, lack civility, or promote prodcuts, services, and values contrary to either the Church, or to the rules of online etiquette.

I'd also like to remind all who comment here that I try to respond personally to each individual comment as I feel is appropriate. Such replies are not meant to end the conversation, but to acknowledge earnest feedback as it is submitted.

And in order to better preserve the spirit and pure intentions for which this blog was established, I also hereby request that anyone not commenting with a regular user name (particularly those whose comments appear under the "Unknown" or "Anonymous" monikers, give the rest of us a name to work with in addressing any replies. If such individuals do not wish to disclose their actual given names, a pseudonym or nickname would suffice.

Any comments made by individuals who opt to not give a name by which they can ber identified may, depending on the substance and tone of such comments, be subject to deletion as well. I would respectfully ask that all of us do all we can to keep the dialogue positive, polite, and without malice or ill-will. May the Lord bless us all in our discussion of these important matters.
