BREAKING TEMPLE NEWS: President Nelson Announces 17 New Temples

Note: On October 6, 2024, before President Nelson announced new temples in General Conference, I was rushed to the Emergency Room and had an acute medical crisis that culminated in a month-long hospital stay. This post was originally set to publish at 4:15 PM, but I could not correct it at that time. So today, (January 14, 2024), I am pleased to complete my analysis of the newest announced temples. My thanks once again to you all.

Hello again, everyone! As I had projected, President Nelson just concluded General Conference by announcing new temples. But he announced 17 new temples rather than the 20 I had originally predicted. The temples will be built in the following locations: Juchitán de Zaragoza Mexico, Santa Ana El Salvador, Medellín Colombia, Santiago Dominican Republic, Puerto Montt Chile, Dublin Ireland, Milan Italy, Abuja Nigeria, Kampala Uganda, Maputo Mozambique, Coeur d’Alene Idaho, Queen Creek Arizona, El Paso Texas, Huntsville Alabama Milwaukee Wisconsin, Summit New Jersey, and Price Utah.

Of the newest 20 temples, I had the following temples down to the exact correct location: Juchitan Mexico (though I didn't include the "de Zaragoza" part), Santa Ana El Salvador, Medellin Colombia, Santiago Dominican Republic, Dublin Ireland,  Milan Italy, Abuja Nigeria, Kampala Uganda, Maputo Mozambique, Coeur d’Alene Idaho, Queen Creek Arizona, El Paso Texas, and Price Utah. I got 13 of the 17 correct to the exact location.

I had the correct general area but the wrong specific location for the following temples: Puerto Montt Chile (I had prioritized Osorno/Punta Arenas/Valparaíso), Milwaukee Wisconsin (I had prioritized Green Bay), and Summit New Jersey (I had prioritized East Brunswick), so I got 3 of the 17 halfway correct.

I was not anticipating the following temples:Huntsville Alabama, which wasn't on my radar at all. In view of this announcement, there are now 367 temples in any phase. Of those 367, President Nelson has announced  185 (roughly 50%). I am grateful that our prophet continues to announce new temples, and that he continues to encourage the Temple Department and Special Projects Division to keep the queue moving steadily.

Stay tuned here for updates from the Church News, Newsroom, and Church of Jesus Christ Temples sites. I’ll be sure to pass word of those along to you all as soon as I learn about them. In the meantime, that does it for now. All comments are, as always, welcome and appreciated on any post at any time, as long as all such feedback is made per the established guidelines.

  1. Was it 17 temples bringing the total to 367. (371 if we count the three Missouri temples in Independence, Far West, and AdamOndiAhamen and Kirkland) The 185 that Pesident Nelson announced are still over half of all 367 temples in just in just 6.50 years out of the total 195.50 years since the restoration.

    2. Now that I read this again, I think James had a prepared post with his prediction and did not edit it before he submitted it.

    3. 1 mean 194.5 years since April 6, 1830. The 6.5 years show that The Lord is truly hastening the work.

  2. Not surprised at a Wisconsin temple, but I would have predicted Madison instead of Milwaukee, taking advantage of a more central location within the Badger State. Queen Creek was a "no brainer", given that it's a "bedroom community" approaching 100K in population, SE of Mesa, east of Gilbert. Are many LDS families moving in? Well, my niece, a schoolteacher, taught a few years ago when she moved from CA to AZ, and she took a temporary job teaching Kindergarten. She said that ALL the children were LDS!

To recap: non-surprises: Queen Creek, AZ; Milwaukee, WI; El Paso, TX; Summit, NJ: Price, UT; Medellin; Columbia, Dublin, Eire; Milano, Italia; "and the rest" (no, the Prophet didn't announce a temple on Gilligan's Island, but if the families of Russel Johnson and Dawn Wells consent to their temple work...).

Surprises: Huntsville, AL. Would have guessed "Redneck Riviera" like Mobile, AL, Pascagoula, MS, or Pensacola, FL. Cour D'Alene, ID. Given proximity to Spokane, don't see why, save Spokane temple getting crowded. Would have guessed Caldwell/Nampa (probably named Treasure Valley Idaho), Blackfoot, or Rigby for another Idaho temple.

Surprise NON-Announcements: West Valley City, Utah; Cottonwood/Holladay, Utah; and especially Spanish Fork, Utah. Also no other Philippines temple?

Of course, the "Standard Disclaimer" is that the Lord didn't deign to consult with yours truly before giving the Prophet the temple list, and I suspect He won't next April, and so on. I can live with that; the temples will go where those Whose House it is wants them, when, and how constructed.

    1. Everyone in Mapleton and Spanish Fork can get to the Payson temple in < 20 minutes or so. And the Payson temple is big and not full most of the time. I'm guessing it may still be a while before a new temple (but happy to be proved wrong next time!)

  3. James is in the hospital so that appears why his post came out wrong and premature before he could edit it.

In addition to my life-long love for the subjects which I cover in the posts of this blog, I have long held the belief that we can disagree without becoming disagreeable. Differences of opinion are natural, while being disagreeable in expressing those differences is not. And in that sense, I have no desire to close the door on anyone who earnestly desires to contribute to the ongoing dialogue on subjects covered in the posts on this blog.

At the same time, however, I recognize that we live in a time when incivility, discourtesy, unkindness, and even cyber-bullying has regrettably become part of online interactions. With that in mind, while anyone who wishes can comment on anything if they choose to do so, I hereby reserve the right to immediately delete any comments which are critical, unkind, lack civility, or promote prodcuts, services, and values contrary to either the Church, or to the rules of online etiquette.

I'd also like to remind all who comment here that I try to respond personally to each individual comment as I feel is appropriate. Such replies are not meant to end the conversation, but to acknowledge earnest feedback as it is submitted.

And in order to better preserve the spirit and pure intentions for which this blog was established, I also hereby request that anyone not commenting with a regular user name (particularly those whose comments appear under the "Unknown" or "Anonymous" monikers, give the rest of us a name to work with in addressing any replies. If such individuals do not wish to disclose their actual given names, a pseudonym or nickname would suffice.

Any comments made by individuals who opt to not give a name by which they can ber identified may, depending on the substance and tone of such comments, be subject to deletion as well. I would respectfully ask that all of us do all we can to keep the dialogue positive, polite, and without malice or ill-will. May the Lord bless us all in our discussion of these important matters.
