Hello again, everyone! Elder Ronald A. Rasband is celebrating his 74th birthday today. Let's get right into this post in his honor. Ronald Anderson Rasband was born in 1951 in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Rulon Hawkins Rasband and Verda Anderson. He served as a full-time missionary in the Eastern States Mission, which was headquartered in New York City and encompassed the whole New York Metro area, while also stretching into western New York and Pennsylvania. Sometime following his honorable return from his mission, he met Melanie Twitchell in a class they both attended at BYU. At the time, both of them were dating other people, but they soon made arrangements to go on a date themselves, and once they started dating, that was it for both of them. They got engaged eight weeks later, were married in the Salt Lake Temple in 1973, and went on to raise their five children.
Following their marriage, they continued their studies at the University of Utah. He later discontinued his college experience in order to begin his professional career in the Huntsman Container Company as a Sales Representative in 1976. Still in that employment 11 years later (in 1987), he was promoted to the position of president and chief operating officer of Huntsman Chemical Corporation, where he closely worked with Jon Huntsman Sr. and later served on the board of directors of that company. It was not until 1995 that, in tribute to his success as a businessman, he received an honorary degree in business and commerce from Utah Valley State College (now Utah Valley University).
As prestigious as his professional career might have been, his life, in similarity to those of his fellow apostles, has been characterized by a variety of assignments in the Church. Elder Rasband has served as a bishop, Temple Square missionary guide, member of the Church’s Sesquicentennial Committee, and, from 1996-1999, as president of the New York New York North Mission. On April 1, 2000, he was sustained as a general authority and member of the First Quorum of the Seventy. Over the next 5 years, he served in the Europe North and Europe Central Areas from 2000-2003. Those areas were later consolidated into a single Europe Area before subsequently splitting agin in August of last year. From 2003-2004, Elder Rasband presided over the Utah Salt Lake City Area. In August 2004, responsibility for oversight of the work of the Church in North America was transferred to the Presidency of the Seventy (with oversight for the US and Canada subsequently being delegated back to area presidencies in August 2018).
He then served from 2004-2005 as Executive Director of the Temple Department. He was called to serve in the Presidency of the Seventy in August 2005, at which time he was assigned oversight for the North America Northwest and North America West Areas. Two years later, his assignment shifted to supervising the Utah North, Utah Salt Lake City, and Utah South Areas (from 2007-2009).
With the April 2008 call of Elder D. Todd Christofferson to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, he had become the second most senior member of the Presidency of the Seventy. The following April, as a result of Elder Neil L. Andersen's call to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, Elder Rasband became the Senior President of the Seventy, and, as such, was given oversight for all areas in the United States and Canada.
He was still serving in that same assignment when, in October 2015, he was called to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. With Elders Gary E. Stevenson and Dale G. Renlund called at the same time (something that had not happened since 1906), the number of those who had served as members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles reached a total of 100. He is currently the seventh in seniority among the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and the tenth in overall apostolic seniority. He also ranks as the fifth oldest among the current members of the Quorum of the Twelve, and the eighth oldest among all 15 apostles.
As I’ve noted previously, I have an indirect personal connection to Elder Rasband. When my wife was initially involved in the institute program, Elder Rasband was one of her instructors. As a result of the three apostolic vacancies in 2015, my wife was one of many who felt Elder Rasband would be called to the apostleship to fill one of those, and she (and others who felt the same way) turned out to be right.
I will never forget praying in advance of the October 2015 General Conference for my own personal witness to know that whoever was called had indeed been chosen by the Lord. The moment President Eyring read the names of the three new apostles, I received the witness I had requested. That experience is one that has been repeated for every apostle called since I entered my adult years. For that reason, I gratefully sustain not just Elder Rasband, but also each of the other 14 apostles in their divinely-appointed roles.
Having served for nearly 23 years as a General Authority, Elder Rasband has had 25 opportunities to address us in General Conference: 1 as a General Authority Seventy, 5 more while in the Presidency of the Seventy, and the remaining 19 since his call to the apostleship. Any of those addresses, covering a wide variety of topics, is well worthy of review.
I am grateful to be able to provide both birthday tributes to and attest to the spiritual confirmation I continually receive regarding the inspired calls of those we sustain as prophets, seers, and revelators. I am likewise grateful to have the opportunity to share the latest details on the global ministries of these Brethren.
I continue to monitor any and all Church News, Newsroom, and Church of Jesus Christ Temples updates and will be sure to pass word of those along to you all as they cross my radar. In the meantime, that does it for now. All comments are, as always, welcome and appreciated on any post at any time, as long as the offered feedback is made per the established guidelines. I hope any of you who would like to share anything will take your opportunity to “sound off” in the comments below. Please subscribe if you liked what you read here and would like to be informed of newly added posts and comments. Thank you for the privilege of your time. Until my next post, I wish you all the best and pray that the Lord will bless you all in everything you do.
The Church News has posted this tribute to Elder Rasband. My thanks once again to you all.
ReplyDeleteThe biographies of 8 more temple leader couples have been shared, none of which are for new temples expected to open this year. Though these incoming presidents and matrons have served seperately and together in a wide range of callings, the following notes about the incoming presidents may be helpful: 1 is a Young Single Adult adviser and temple sealer who previously served as an area seventy (R. Randall Bluth); 2 are stake patriarchs and temple sealers; 1 is a ward mission leader and temple sealer who formerly served as an area seventy (Flavio A. Cooper); 1 is an Elders' Quorum president and temple sealer; 1 is a temple sealer and former mission president; 1 is a ward Sunday School presidency counselor and temple sealer; and 1 is a Church Correlation Materials Evaluation Committee member and temple sealer who formerly served as an area seventy (Blake M. Roney).
DeleteThe Church News shared one other update, which speaks for itself. The Newsroom shared its version of that same report. My thanks once again to you all.
The Young Women General Presidency posted a new video via Young Women Worldwide about the first chapter of the new "For the Strength of Youth" guide. And Church members in Peru "Reflect the Savior's love and service". My thanks once again to you all.
DeleteThe next batch of incoming mission leader biographies was published this morning. 1 of the 16 couples with biographies shared today will begin their service next month, as opposed to the traditional July start for the other 15 couples. Though these couples, individually and together, have served in a wide range of callings, the following notes about the incoming presidents may be helpful:
Delete1 is a seminary teacher and a counselor in his stake presidency; 1 is an MTC branch president who formerly served in a stake presidency; 1 is a stake presidency counselor; 1 serves (along with his wife) as FSY group leaders and session diirectors; 1 is a stake president and temple ordinace worker; 1 couple recently served as senior missionaries; 1 is a bishopric counselor who formerly served as a stake president; 1 formerly served as a stake presidency counselor; 1 is currently a bishop; 1 is a former stake high concilor; 1 is a media and technology specialist and temple ordinance worker; 1 (Art Rascon) is a current area seventy; 1 is currently a stake high councilor; 1 is an MTC branch president and temple ordinance worker; 1 is a former stake presidency counselor; and 1 (along with his wife) formerly served as senior missionaries in the Philippines MTC.
On a personal note, 1 of the couples featured today will replace my "adopted" Uncle David and Aunt Stacie Sturt., who had been serving in Nairobi Kenya and whom we have dearly missed the last 3 years. Moving on to other developments, the next featured guests for the Tabernacle Organits' Virtuoso Concert Series has been announced. The Church News has also featured another video and has published the latest edition of "This Week on Social", which featured posts from the following general Church laaders:
President Dallin H. Oaks, First Counselor in the First Presidency; the following members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles: Acting President Jeffrey R. Holland and Elders Dieter F. Uchtdorf, Neil L. Andersen, and Ulisses Soares; the Young Women General Presidency (President Emily Belle Freeman and her respective First and Second Counselors, Sisters Tamara W. Runia and Andrea Munoz Spannaus, who posted via Young Women Worldwide: President Freeman also published a separate post via Young Women Worldwide); Primary General President Susan H. Porter (who posted in conjunction with The Friend and Primary Worldwide) and her First Counselor, Sister Amy A. Wright; the Sunday School General Presidency (President Paul V. Johnson and his counselors, Brothers Chad H. Webb and Gabriel W. Reid), who posted via the newly-created "Gospel Learning and Teaching" page; and the entire Young Men General Presidency (President Steven J. Lund and Brothers Bradley R. (Brad) Wilcox and Michael T. Nelson, who posted via Young Men Worldwide).
My thanks once again to you all for wading through these comments.
The Church News has shared one additional report. My thanks once again to you all.
DeleteMy personal connection to the new mission leaders is President Flake. He was first counselor in my Stake for two different Presidents until our stake split and he was called as the President of the new stake. He was also my institute teacher and worked for the CES as the supervisor over the seminaries and institutes in tbe area.
DeleteThat's so cool, Scott! Thanks for stopping by to share that. I was slightly surprised that no GA Seventies were called as mission presidents this year, but there are a lot of current or former area seventies that will begin serving this year. I always appreciate hearing from you.
DeleteOn this Saturday, the Church News has shared a few new reports: Church News editor Jon Ryan Jensen explains the "why" behind President Nelson's counsel to build bridges of understanding rather than walls of segregation. 2 cities in Germany have honored the life of the youngest Nazi resistance member and faithful Latter-day Saint who was executed. Derrick Porter (and others) pen the message that he will present tomorrow during "Music & the Spoken Word". And a reenactment walk from Nauvoo Illinois to the Mississippi River helped youth in the northeastern United States connect to their ancestors. With nothing new reported from the Newsroom in the last few days, there may or may not be any temple construction updates to pass along either. But I will check on that for sure, and if I find anything, I will pass it along here ASAP. My thanks once again to you all.
ReplyDeleteUpdates have been reported on the Wichita Kansas and Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temples. And as I mentioned yesterday, a new update on the Tarawa Kiribati Temple indicates that preliminary site work is underway, while a new picture of the Tacloban City Philippines Temple suggests that full-scale construction might begin there soon. My thanks once again to you all.
DeleteHello again, everyone! I took a hiatus from sharing the latest updates on Sunday to spend some quality time with my sweet wife. Having done so, I am back to share the latest Church News and Church Temples updates, as there is nothing new from the Newsroom since my last shared update. The Church News shares guidelines on how to help disabled children at Church. The latest edition of "In Case You Missed It: Week in Review shared the top 10 developments covered by the Church News in the last week. And the "Come Follow Me" study for this week centers on D&C 10-11.
ReplyDeleteJust a brief comment on that last update: For those who don't know, the Gospel Library app now allows you to set reminders about personal study and prayer, and sends out reminders of the same at the appointed time each day. Among the options you can choose for that reminder are the Verse of the Day and the Quote of the Day, the latter of which shares snippets from the October 2024 General Conference talks. The Verses of the Day within the last week have heavily focused on D&C section 10, so hopefully the Verses of the Day this week will have a similar focus on section 11. I would urge any of my readers who are struggling to accomplish their gospel study every day to set those reminders. Temple updates, if any, will follow either in just a few minutes or sometime later today. For now, my thanks once again to you all.
As reported in the Church News and the Canadian Newsroom, tours begin this week for the Toronto Ontario Temple. But I do not believe that this will be the only major temple news today. Stay tuned here today to see if I'm correct. My thanks once again to you all.
DeleteNo other major temple construction updates today. My thanks once again to you all.
DeleteThe Church News has published two new updates, which speak for themselves. My thanks once again to you all.
DeleteOn this Tuesday, the Newsroom has covered Young Women General President Emily Belle Freeman's ministry in Japan. Meanwhile the Church News has shared three new reports which speak for themselves, and one other update that may suggest one of the next Ecuadoran cities to get a temple.
DeleteI say that because President Nelson has announced a few new temples in areas within which natural disasters have recently occurred. And speaking of temples, a new update on the Bengaluru India Temple indicates that there is no current construction activity there. The Church Temples site has moved the Bengaluru India Temple down from being between the Lubumbashi DR Congo and Queretaro Mexico Temples to being between the Cody Wyoming and Riberao Preto Brazil Temples, but until construction resumes for India's first temple, I have moved it to the bottom of my current queue of temples, which includes those temples for which full-scale construction is or will be pending.
The Church Temples site also moved the Austin Texas Temple from being between the Cody Wyoming and Riberao Preto Brazil Temples to being between the Londrina Brazil and Teton River Idaho Temples. Those are the major shifts I noticed in the current queue, but if I become aware of any other temple construction status updates, I will be sure to publish those here as I become aware thereof. In the meantime, my thanks once again to you all.
I took another hiatus from commenting yesterday, but here are the updates the Church News posted then: A new report on RootsTech; Brother Mark J. Wiest of the Young Men General Advisory Council shares guidelines for bishos about properly delegating things to other ward members, including the Elders' Quorum and Relief Society Presidencies, as much as they can so that these Judges in Israel can focus on the youth. And Relief Society General President Camille N. Johnson gave counsel to MTC missionaries, and how a stake in Oregon found opportunities to share God's light. My thanks once again to you all.
