BREAKING NEWS: Tribute Broadcast and Funeral Services Announced for President Nelson

Hello again, everyone! The funeral arrangements for President Nelson have just been confirmed. A special tribute broadcast will air on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, at 10:00 AM MDT, featuring remarks from several Church leaders, Public funeral services, including a public viewing, will be held the week after the October 2025 General Conference, which will proceed as scheduled. The public viewing will be held on Monday, October 6, from 9 AM-8 PM.in the Conference Center. The official funeral services will follow on Tuesday, October 7, at 12:00 PM MDT. A private burial service will follow the funeral proceedings.

This released information answers a slew of questions. The only unknown factor is how soon the First Presidency might be reorganized. My feeling is that such a reorganization may only happen on Wednesday, October 8, after President Nelson is laid to rest. But at least we have more information now than we had this morning.

I invite you all to stay tuned here for my coverage of the latest updates from the Church News, Newsroom, and Church of Jesus Christ Temples sites. I’ll be sure to pass word of those along to you all as soon as I learn about them. In the meantime, that does it for now. 1. I'm split on whether they hold a solemn assembly or not. Or if they even call a new member of the twelve. If they do proceed without a first presidency it will be interesting to hear how they word the sustaining. Also, do you think that President Nelson had already pre-recorded his talk? And if so, will they play it.

    1. Hey, Scott! As someone who has monitored the coverage on this, I can tell you that the original release about the prophet's death indicates: "A successor is not expected to be formally chosen by the Church’s Quorum of the Twelve Apostles until after President Nelson’s funeral (details pending)."

With that in mind, General Conference continues as usual. That will likely mean no Solemn Assembly this time around, and that the sustaining of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles as the presiding body of the Church will be presented in lieu of separately sustaining a First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve as is regularly done.

There are some who seem to think that the memorial broadcast in question is a guise for introducing a new First Presidency, but I am not convinced of that on my end. So that is how I think the conference will proceed. I could be entirely wrong, but this seems to be logical to me. This is no more and no less than my own opinion, so I hope its's taken as such. I could easily be wrong, but this seems to be the most likely way forward. Thanks again for the inquiry, Scott. I always appreciate hearing from you.

    2. I watched your exchange on the church growth blog, and bith of you spike as if there was a zero percent chance that you could be wrong. I feel like anything could happen. The phrase "not expected" isn't definite. And after President Nelson I have come to expect the unexpected. Here's an interesting question for you, let's say that President Nelson did record his message and it is aired during conference. If in the message new temples are announced, are they Nelson or Oaks temples?

    3. I just don't think the Church would announce a broadcast in memoriam of President Nelson as a guide for the announcement of a new First Presidency. If that were the case, there would also be a press conference after that broadcast. And I have made a lifetime practice of studying apostolic interregnums. There does happen to be precedence for no First Presidencies during a General Conference. And I am reasonably certain of the assertions I offer precisely because I have done the research on them. The news release states that a First Presidency is not expected to be announced until after President Nelson's funeral. And the funeral proper will be held the Monday after General Conference. It's not hard to reach a conclusion with both of those factors in mind. And I think it would be disrespectful to the memory of President Nelson and his legacy for a First Presidency to be appointed before he is laid to rest. President Oaks would not do that. So it's a relative cerrtainty that it won't happen. If I am sure of myself, that is why.

  2. The way the church is organized we are not without a prophet. Some of us need to remember that all of the apostles have been set apart as Prophets, seers, and revelators. With President Oaks being the presiding apostle, The changeover and succession will be seamless and his counselors will be chosen through prayer and inspiration as well as filling the empty seat in the quorum of the 12 apostles. We don't have a campaign or an election process.

    1. Amen, Chris! Amen! All of the apostles are prophets, seers, and revelators. They are sustained as such. And the presiding apostle is the de facto Acting President of the Church, so the Church is not without a head. The head is Jesus Christ. The new prophet will be officially appointed as such when the time is right. And that time is not likely to come before President Nelson is laid to rest. Thank you, Chris, for that reminder.

In addition to my life-long love for the subjects which I cover in the posts of this blog, I have long held the belief that we can disagree without becoming disagreeable. Differences of opinion are natural, while being disagreeable in expressing those differences is not. And in that sense, I have no desire to close the door on anyone who earnestly desires to contribute to the ongoing dialogue on subjects covered in the posts on this blog.

At the same time, however, I recognize that we live in a time when incivility, discourtesy, unkindness, and even cyber-bullying has regrettably become part of online interactions. With that in mind, while anyone who wishes can comment on anything if they choose to do so, I hereby reserve the right to immediately delete any comments which are critical, unkind, lack civility, or promote prodcuts, services, and values contrary to either the Church, or to the rules of online etiquette.

I'd also like to remind all who comment here that I try to respond personally to each individual comment as I feel is appropriate. Such replies are not meant to end the conversation, but to acknowledge earnest feedback as it is submitted.

And in order to better preserve the spirit and pure intentions for which this blog was established, I also hereby request that anyone not commenting with a regular user name (particularly those whose comments appear under the "Unknown" or "Anonymous" monikers, give the rest of us a name to work with in addressing any replies. If such individuals do not wish to disclose their actual given names, a pseudonym or nickname would suffice.

Any comments made by individuals who opt to not give a name by which they can ber identified may, depending on the substance and tone of such comments, be subject to deletion as well. I would respectfully ask that all of us do all we can to keep the dialogue positive, polite, and without malice or ill-will. May the Lord bless us all in our discussion of these important matters.
