In addition to my life-long love for the subjects which I cover in the posts of this blog, I have long held the belief that we can disagree without becoming disagreeable. Differences of opinion are natural, while being disagreeable in expressing those differences is not. And in that sense, I have no desire to close the door on anyone who earnestly desires to contribute to the ongoing dialogue on subjects covered in the posts on this blog.
At the same time, however, I recognize that we live in a time when incivility, discourtesy, unkindness, and even cyber-bullying has regrettably become part of online interactions. With that in mind, while anyone who wishes can comment on anything if they choose to do so, I hereby reserve the right to immediately delete any comments which are critical, unkind, lack civility, or promote prodcuts, services, and values contrary to either the Church, or to the rules of online etiquette.
I'd also like to remind all who comment here that I try to respond personally to each individual comment as I feel is appropriate. Such replies are not meant to end the conversation, but to acknowledge earnest feedback as it is submitted.
And in order to better preserve the spirit and pure intentions for which this blog was established, I also hereby request that anyone not commenting with a regular user name (particularly those whose comments appear under the "Unknown" or "Anonymous" monikers, give the rest of us a name to work with in addressing any replies. If such individuals do not wish to disclose their actual given names, a pseudonym or nickname would suffice.
Any comments made by individuals who opt to not give a name by which they can ber identified may, depending on the substance and tone of such comments, be subject to deletion as well. I would respectfully ask that all of us do all we can to keep the dialogue positive, polite, and without malice or ill-will. May the Lord bless us all in our discussion of these important matters.
I think Henderson is out because the Las Vegas temple is practically in the City of Henderson, and it's also not overwhelmed.
ReplyDeleteChandler AZ is definitely out, as the Gilbert temple is less than 10 minutes away, and the Mesa temple is 20 minutes away. Both existing temples in the East Valley area have huge capacity, and are underused. I was present at the dedication of the Phoenix temple in 2014, and Elder Richards said that with the eventual completion of the temple in Tucson, Arizona's temple needs would be served for a long time. Should there be another temple in the Phoenix area, my money is on a second temple in Mesa near the intersection of Val Vista and McKellips. The Church owns a big area of land, including two neighboring ward houses, a ball field, and a sizable orange grove. That area is also the epicenter of Mesa Mormons, and has easy access to a freeway (much easier than the current Mesa temple). This is probably wishful thinking on my part, because the Mesa temple is currently severely underused. There's also a possibility of a temple in the San Tan Valley, as membership is growing and the Gilbert temple is 20-45 minutes away from the centers of population... but the number of stakes will have to triple (which isn't impossible in the next 20 years) before that will happen.
I'd love to see a temple in Port Morseby! Bentonville would be great as well -- those Walmart employees are loyal, pay large amounts of tithing, and have to travel 3 hours currently. And of course, more temples in Africa would be a wonderful blessing for the Saints there. The future growth of the Church will be in Africa, and it would be great to get ahead of the curve!
Thanks for your thoughts. I wasn't aware of the Las Vegas temple being in Henderson. I was also not aware of Elder Richards' statement about Arizona. Guess I will remove those from the list then.
ReplyDeleteAs for Port Moresby and Bentonville, my inside information from Rick Satterfield (Port Moresby) and my former TL at work (Bentonville) land has been purchased for temples there, and it is only a matter of time before those temples happen. I won't be surprised if these temples are announced, along with others, in October, nor will I be surprised if no new temples are announced.
As far as Africa, these nations mentioned are among the most populous LDS cities in terms of Church presence without a temple. So if any new temples are announced this go-round, those seem like the most likely possibilities.
DeleteI deleted the Henderson and Chandler temples and added a temple for Lagos, Nigeria in the main list and Jakarta Indonesia as a dark horse candidate. THoughts?

DeleteI definitely think Lagos could have a shot in the next few years! Membership is growing like crazy, it's a major city with lots of transportation links, and it's just a matter of time.
ReplyDeleteJakarta sounds interesting... but I'd put my money on Singapore first, as it's a much bigger transportation hub. It's also a more developed country, and I am sure that temple presidents, temple missionaries, and visiting members of the Temple Department would rather be able to drink the water and avoid the violence Jakarta is infamous for having. Singapore is not that far from Jakarta, and is much closer to (non-Muslim) centers of growth in Malaysia. Still, in 20 years Jakarta would be a great candidate for a temple!
