New Mission Presidents Announced
The 8 area seventies may or may not be released this April, as area seventies called as mission presidents have been known to fill both assignments for 1-3 General Conferences following the commencement of their service as mission presidents. Elder Cordon, who was sustained as a General Authority Seventy in April 2015, will need to be released as a member of the Central America Area Presidency.
And for Brother Neilson, insofar as I have been able to ascertain, the Church did not formally present his name for sustaining vote in General Conference, so his release may not be done over the pulpit either. But Elder Steven E. Snow, who serves as Church Historian and Recorder, and whose call was presented for sustaining vote, will be 70 in November, so perhaps the Church will bring on both a new Church Historian and Recorder and a new assistant. That will be interesting to learn more about.
Getting back to the subject of new mission leadership, their biographies will be published in the Church News in the coming weeks, and I will pass those along either in new posts on this blog or on the comments of previously-published posts as I become aware of them. That does it for this post. Any and all comments are, as always, welcome and appreciated, on any post at any time, as long as such comments are made in accordance with the established guidelines.
Thank you for the privilege of your time. If you enjoyed what you read here and would like to stay informed of newly-added content, please feel free to subscribe. Until my next post, I wish each one of you all the best and pray that the Lord will bless you all in everything you do.

In addition to my life-long love for the subjects which I cover in the posts of this blog, I have long held the belief that we can disagree without becoming disagreeable. Differences of opinion are natural, while being disagreeable in expressing those differences is not. And in that sense, I have no desire to close the door on anyone who earnestly desires to contribute to the ongoing dialogue on subjects covered in the posts on this blog.
At the same time, however, I recognize that we live in a time when incivility, discourtesy, unkindness, and even cyber-bullying has regrettably become part of online interactions. With that in mind, while anyone who wishes can comment on anything if they choose to do so, I hereby reserve the right to immediately delete any comments which are critical, unkind, lack civility, or promote prodcuts, services, and values contrary to either the Church, or to the rules of online etiquette.
I'd also like to remind all who comment here that I try to respond personally to each individual comment as I feel is appropriate. Such replies are not meant to end the conversation, but to acknowledge earnest feedback as it is submitted.
And in order to better preserve the spirit and pure intentions for which this blog was established, I also hereby request that anyone not commenting with a regular user name (particularly those whose comments appear under the "Unknown" or "Anonymous" monikers, give the rest of us a name to work with in addressing any replies. If such individuals do not wish to disclose their actual given names, a pseudonym or nickname would suffice.
Any comments made by individuals who opt to not give a name by which they can ber identified may, depending on the substance and tone of such comments, be subject to deletion as well. I would respectfully ask that all of us do all we can to keep the dialogue positive, polite, and without malice or ill-will. May the Lord bless us all in our discussion of these important matters.
Elder Wong is being released as President of the Vancouver mission, so it looks like Elder Cordon will be the only General Authority serving in that capacity.
ReplyDeleteHey, Scott! Good catch. Thanks for bringing that to my attention. I imagine that Elder Wong will be given an area assignment, or serve in other capacities at Church headquarters. That brings up an interesting thought: What if the Church calls an international General Authority as the new Church historian and recorder? There is no doctrinal precedent that I know of that says one has to be American-born to serve in that capacity.
ReplyDeleteAlso, there was something else that just came to mind that I wanted to mention here. The list mentions those called to serve in the "Utah Area", which is further proof that the 3 areas have been merged into one, but lists the mission presidents called to serve in the other four areas overseen by two area presidencies as four separate and distinct areas. So it appears that only the Utah area was consolidated, and the other four areas remain separate. There will be much more ahead for the Church, I am sure. Thanks again, Scott, for stopping by to comment.
Just looked into this further. Anthon H. Lund, who served in the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and in the First Presidency, was born in Denmark, and may have been the first international person to serve as Church Historian and Recorder.
ReplyDeleteBefore that time, internationally-born individuals had served as Assistant or Acting Church Historian and Recorder, but Anthon H. Lund was the first international Church Historian and Recorder. So that is not unprecedented and could happen again. It will be interesting to see what occurs in that regard as well.
Although in the past there may have been a delay in releasing a few area seventy when called to be mission presidents, I beleive you can count on them being released either in April or October of this year. Even in the past, de facto they were released by 1 May to totally engage themselves in their mission calling.
ReplyDeleteIn April General Conference, the Church notes that the effective date for the releases presented at that time is May 1, but I have seen nothing stating that in any October General Conference of which I am aware. Where are you getting that information? If it's not categorically stated by the Brethren, I am not sure where such verification could be found, if indeed it exists anywhere. While it makes sense in a way, since it hasn't been categorically stated as far as I am aware, that might be open to interpretation. If I am in error on this, please point me to the source that can enlighten me on that point. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteAlso, current area seventies who have been assigned to serve as mission presidents in their land of residency have been known to retain both assignments for an extended period of time, which can be verified by several sources in the public domain, particularly sources published by the Church, which list their titles in both assignments.
ReplyDeleteThe San Juan Temple now has a groundbreaking date set for May 4. Looks like the original article was updated today for the groundbreaking announcement.
ReplyDeleteEric, I just looked at the article and refreshed it a few times. In each of the views, both the original and each refreshed version merely showed the sentence stating the groundbreaking would occur later this year. But when i ran a Google search, the following page popped up, which is a separate article:

Hope this information is helpful to all who read it. Breaking news post coming within the next few minutes.
