BREAKING TEMPLE NEWS: Elder Neil L. Andersen Will Dedicate the Lisbon Portugal Temple

Hello again, everyone! As some of you may know, the last two temples dedicated by the Church were dedicated by apostles with personal ties to them. Elder Dale G. Renlund dedicated the Kinshasa DR Congo Temple in April, and Elder Ulisses Soares dedicated the Fortaleza Brazil Temple 1.5 months later. I had anticipated that personal apostolic connections to an area would determine who dedicated or rededicated other temples this year, and for that reason, I anticipated that either President Eyring, Elder Andersen, or Elder Renlund, any of our three apostles fluent in French, would preside over this weekend's dedication of the Port-au-Prince Haiti Temple. Since President Eyring and Elder Renlund have each overseen a dedication or rededication, I assumed that Elder Andersen would preside at the Port-au-Prince Haiti Temple dedication.

With Elder David A. Bednar set to preside at the youth devotional tiomorrow night, unless a more senior apostle is present at the dedication on Saturday, Elder Bednar will indeed dedicate that temple. And I have learned today why Elder Andersen was not sent to dedicate the Haiti Temple. According to this news release (shared to report the visit of the President of Portugal to the Lisbon Temple), Elder Andersen has been asked to preside over the dedication of that temple. It makes sense, since he is a multilingugal apostle, whom I believe is fluent in both Spanish and Portuguese in addition to his native English and French.

So that would seem to settle both questions: Elder Bednar will indeed be presiding over this weekend's dedication of the Port-au-Prince Haiti Temple, and two weeks later, Elder Andersen will be presiding over the dedication of the Lisbon Portugal Temple. Then next month, President Ballard will preside at the one-session priviate rededication for the Raleigh North Carolina Temple the week after General Conference. And if President Nelson is rotating temple dedication duties among as many different apostles this year as may be possible, it seems reasonable to maintain a belief that Elder Uchtdorf, our native German apostle, will preside over the three-session public rededication for he Frankfurt Germany Temple one week later.

And if I am correct that the rededications of temples will continue to be done by more senior apostles, then I see two possible options for the rededication of the Asuncion Paraguay Temple on November 3: either President Oaks or Elder Christofferson. I don't yet know what, if anything, that may tell us about who might be most likely to preside over the dedication of the Arequipa Peru Temple, but that may be a question for another time. In the meantime, it appears that the information about the potential time-frame for the groundbreaking of the Richmond Virginia Temple (which, per information from the Church of Jesus Christ Temples site, is likely to occur in mid-to-late 2020) may not be in error, in which case, it could be another year before that temple has a groundbreaking. Time will tell.

I have some additional Church news (and may have temple updates) to report as well, but will save that for the comments section of this post a little later today. In the meantime, that does it for now. Any and all comments are, as always, welcome and appreciated, on any post at any time, as long as such comments are made in accordance with the established guidelines. Thank you for the privilege of your time. If you enjoyed what you read here and would like to stay informed of newly added content, please feel free to subscribe. Until my next post, I wish each one of you all the best and pray that the Lord will bless you all in everything you do.

Boyd Matheson has provided another editorial piece for the Church News, this one focusing on some of the lessons he has learned through covering President Nelson's ministry tours within the last 1.5 years:

As some of you may recall my mentioning earlier this year, when the Church was announcing new temple presidents, Santiago Chile was one of the temples for which such an announcement was made. I am not sure of what might have happened between now and then, but earlier today, the Church News shared an article indicating that a different man had been called to fill that assignment, which will become effective in November of this year:

And finally, the latest edition of "This Week on Social" was published a short while ago as well, and it featured posts from the following leaders: Church President Russell M. Nelson (from whom 5 posts reflecting on his Latin American Ministry were shared); Elders Ronald A. Rasband and Gary E. Stevenson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles; Relief Society General President Sister Jean B. Bingham and her First Counselor, Sister Sharon Eubank; and Sister Becky Craven, Second Counselor in the Young Women General Presidency.

The overview of those posts, along with links to the posts themselves, can be found at the following web address:

I continue to monitor all Church news and temple developments and will keep doing my level best to bring word of those to you all as I become aware of such developments. I should mention I anticipate providing some coverage on this weekend's dedication of the Port-au-Prince Haiti Temple, along with covering the final days of President Nelson's Latin American Minstry Tour. Stay tuned for those reports, whatever form they might take, and thanks again for your continued interest and ongoing support.

  2. Hello again, everyone! Within the last 36 hours, various Church departments have provided 3 letters on matters impacting the entire Church. The first is an August 29 letter co-issued by Seminaries and Institutes of Religion and also the Priesthood and Family Department, sharing details about the broadcast of the Worldwide Devotional for Young Adults: A Face-to-Face Event with Elder Ulisses Soares and Elder Craig C. Christensen.

The other two were sent out electronically earlier today. The first, from the Church Communication Department, provides details on the viewing information for the 95th birthday broadcast honoring Church President Russell M. Nelson. The celebration will, quite appropriately, be subtitled "Let Us All Press On". And the final notice from the Priesthood Department indicates that, effective in 2020, instructions for Singing Time and the Sacrament Meeting Presentation will be detailed in the new "Come Follow Me--For Primary" manuals each year.

Those notices can be read at the following web address, for which anyone interested will need to register with an official Church account, if they have not already done so:

    https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/letters?lang=eng

With that noted, my thanks once again to you all.

  3. Hello again, everyone! The Church News and the Newsroom have provided some coverage on President Nelson's ministry in Brasilia Brazil yesterday, where he, his wife, and Elder and Sister Cook addressed missionaries:

    https://www.thechurchnews.com/leaders-and-ministry/2019-08-30/president-nelson-book-of-mormon-missionaries-brazil-latam-158346

    https://newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org/article/president-nelson-brasilia-brazil-2019

In the Newsroom release, President Nelson dropped an interesting teaser for what is to come during the October General Conference, and he noted specifically that more temples and "other announcements" will be made during the October General Conference.

I am not sure what exactly that might mean, but we will find out in just over a month. In the meantime, President Nelson wraps up his Latin American Minstry Tour with an afternoon devotional in Sao Paulo tomorrow, which will be broadcast to all conegregations throughout Brazil, after which the leaders will head home to rest briefly before Friday, when President Nelson's 95th birthday celebration will be held.

In the meantime, Elder Bednar is set to preside at the youth devotional tonight prior to overseeing the dedication of the Port-au-Prince Haiti Temple tomorrow. Look for reports on that as they are made avaialbe, along with coverage of the wrap-up of the prophet's Latin American Ministry Tour. My thanks again to you all.

  4. Hello again, everyone! I have some temple updates to pass along, so let's get right into those. At the Winnipeg Manitoba Temple, walls have been attached to the tower framework, the structural frame for the entrance window has been installed, and framing is underway for the baptismal font.

Meanwhile, at the Abidjan Côte d'Ivoire Temple, the main floor and tower walls are being poured. And at the Pocatello Idaho Temple, major progress has been noted, with work on the foundation completed. Structural framing for the temple has also begun, the foundation has been poured for the maintenance building, and work has also begun on the parking lot curbing.

Also, a short while ago, the groundbreaking estimate for the Richmond Virginia Temple was changed to mid-2020, which is still later than I thought it might occur. I will keep my eyes on all temple developments, in addition to all Church news updates, and will be sure to pass those along to you all as I receive word of them. In the meantime, I again appreciate your ongoing interest and continued support.

In addition to my life-long love for the subjects which I cover in the posts of this blog, I have long held the belief that we can disagree without becoming disagreeable. Differences of opinion are natural, while being disagreeable in expressing those differences is not. And in that sense, I have no desire to close the door on anyone who earnestly desires to contribute to the ongoing dialogue on subjects covered in the posts on this blog.

At the same time, however, I recognize that we live in a time when incivility, discourtesy, unkindness, and even cyber-bullying has regrettably become part of online interactions. With that in mind, while anyone who wishes can comment on anything if they choose to do so, I hereby reserve the right to immediately delete any comments which are critical, unkind, lack civility, or promote prodcuts, services, and values contrary to either the Church, or to the rules of online etiquette.

I'd also like to remind all who comment here that I try to respond personally to each individual comment as I feel is appropriate. Such replies are not meant to end the conversation, but to acknowledge earnest feedback as it is submitted.

And in order to better preserve the spirit and pure intentions for which this blog was established, I also hereby request that anyone not commenting with a regular user name (particularly those whose comments appear under the "Unknown" or "Anonymous" monikers, give the rest of us a name to work with in addressing any replies. If such individuals do not wish to disclose their actual given names, a pseudonym or nickname would suffice.

Any comments made by individuals who opt to not give a name by which they can ber identified may, depending on the substance and tone of such comments, be subject to deletion as well. I would respectfully ask that all of us do all we can to keep the dialogue positive, polite, and without malice or ill-will. May the Lord bless us all in our discussion of these important matters.
