POTENTIAL BREAKING TEMPLE NEWS: Several Temple Locations Added to Google Maps or Classic Maps; Release of Official Information Imminent?

Hello again, everyonne! On the Church Growth Blog, there have been periodic mentions of details of new temples being added on the Church's Classic Maps page. Most often, those mentions occur when recently-dedicated temples are added to show their corresponding temple districts. But periodically, a new tidbit can be gleaned about other temples that are in various phases of planning and approval. And it is on that front that I am providing this report of potential breaking temple news.

Several new comments on the most recent thread of the Church Growth Blog provide information about temples that have recently been added to Classic Maps. Each of these temples is currently in an "Announced" status, where no official information has been released by the Church. So those temples being added in the very recent past might suggest that they are temples to watch for the near future for potential announcements, including (but not limited to) site and/or location confirmations, exterior renderings released, and groundbreakings scheduled (or already having privately taken place).

The first of those mentioned, Managua Nicaragua, has a location that is verified only by Google Maps, not by the Church's Classic Maps page.  But since a site was reportedly acquired for that temple a while ago, and since it is the third of three Central American temples previously referenced in past comments here from Patzicia, who provided accurate information about the timing of the release of site information, exterior renderings, and groundbreaking announcements before those announcements were eventually made, the fact that it is listed on Google maps gives me hope that something official could be coming down the pike soon.

The same situation applies to the Lagos Nigeria Temple. We know, courtesy of the Church of Jesus Christ Temples site, that property was acquired for that temple not long after its' announcement, and although the Google Maps information is not also reflected on Classic Maps, hopefully that means something will happen with that temple sooner rather than later. The Cagayan de Oro Philippines Temple is similarly listed on Google maps, but also shows up on Classic Maps in the same spot. It will be up to the Church to confirm that is indeed the location, but it seems more likely than not.

Similarly, Google Maps provides information on the location of the Rexburg North Idaho Temple, for which a member living in that region has confirmed the information is accurate. We also have an indirect confirmationon the location of the Rexburg North Idaho Temple, which follows the early October report about the family who deeded the land for the temple over to the Church. Unless something major chages, that will be the location of the temple in question.

And finally, I had mentioned in the past that I received feedback shortly after the announcement of the Russia temple that the only cities under active consideration were Moscow, Saratov, and St. Petersburg. Subsequently, I learned from someone privy to the information that Moscow was the only location under active consideration. And given that the headquarters for the Europe East Area offices are located in Moscow, it would not shock me if the temple in Russia was not only based in Moscow, but also included ancillary facilities with offices and residences for the area and mission presidency members.

So I was not shocked by a recent statement on the Church Growth Blog that Classic Maps showed the probable location of the Russia Temple, which, if true, will likely mean the name of that temple will be the Moscow Russia Temple. I was in the middle of an overhaul on my temple construction progress report anyway in view of new analysis I did on the likely timing for temple dedications and rededications for the next two years, so updates were necessary either way.

That being said, I want to be absolutely clear when I say that until the Church makes official announcements on any of these 5 temples, any information from anywhere else, including even the Classics Maps site, is subject to change, clarification or correction. When the time is right for each of these 5 temples (or any others) to move forward in the queue, that will occur. The Lord is in control of His work, and He manifests His will concerning any aspect thereof through His chosen prophet today, President Russell M. Nelson.

But these latest updates also mean that there will likely be even more temple news to cover in the coming months than I originally believed. To the best of my ability, I will track all of these developments and pass word of those along to you all here as I become aware thereof. In the meantime, that does it for now. Any and all comments are, as always, welcome and appreciated, on any post at any time, as long as such comments are made in accordance with the established guidelines.

I hope any of you who would like to share anything will take your opportunity to “sound off” in the comments below. Thank you for the privilege of your time. If you enjoyed what you read here and would like to stay informed of newly added content, please feel free to subscribe. Until my next post, I wish each one of you all the best and pray that the Lord will bless you all in everything you do.

  1. Hello again, everyone! In the comments of the previous post, I shared several new reports published by the Church News today:

    https://stokessoundsoff.blogspot.com/2022/02/clarification-on-blog-comments.html?showComment=1645128305548#c4152770389530232048

This comment is being added here to share one additional report therefrom:

    1. And the Newsroom has provided an updated list of new temple leaders who have been called this year, but it appears that some of those leaders will begin serving in July (8 couples, including those who will oversee the Helena Montana Temple) while others will begin serving in September (16 couples, all for temples currently operating):

My thanks once again to you all.

    2. The Newsroom list seemed off somehow, so I double-checked that list against my own list, and it appears the Newsroom is missing the information about the Kyiv Ukraine Temple leaders:

      https://www.thechurchnews.com/callings/2022-02-10/temple-presidents-and-matrons-ukraine-oregon-denmark-nigeria-alaska-paris-philippines-rexburg-242394

That announcement was made one week ago. My thanks once again to you all.

    3. This will be my fourth (or fifth) attempt to post this comment. As reported by the Newsroom and the Church News, in consultation with and the approval of the First Presidency, the presidency of the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square (Mike Leavitt, L. Whitney Clayton, and Gary B. Porter) have announced that the twice postponed Heritage Tour will, in view of the COVID-19 variants and their effects on the operations of the Choir, be cancelled, while the Choir will now focus on 4 new objectives to expand their global reach:

      https://newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org/article/tabernacle-choir-presidency-bold-future-initiatives

      https://www.thechurchnews.com/living-faith/2022-02-17/tabernacle-choir-leavitt-clayton-heritage-tour-youtube-first-presidency-243524

And new information I found on the nations of Brazil, Cabo Verde, Ecuador, Guam, Japan, and New Zealand indicates that travel from the US to each of these locations is being discouraged. This might mean that the Rio de Janeiro opening could be postponed for a second time, and that a first postponement may be applied to the opening arrangements for the Yigo Guam Temple. It could also mean that the announcement of opening dates for the Quito Ecuador, Praia Cabo Verde, and Belem Brazil Temples might not be able to be made until May or June of this year. The announcement of reopening arrangements for Hamilton New Zealand and Tokyo Japan might also be delayed until at least May or June.

Just a minor setback, I'm sure. It will be interesting to see what happens with the scheduling of these events, I also became aware of new information about the potential time-frames within which temples could have groundbreakings this year, so analysis on that will also be coming. And I continue to work on my revisions to my general conference predictions. So there's a lot more coming down the pike. My thanks once again to you all.

    4. And here is a summary of remarks given to BYU-Hawaii students by Elder Michael John U. Teh and his wife, Sister Grace Teh:

  2. Hello again, everyone! This hadn't occurred to me before, but this March, the Relief Society organization will be celebrating 180 years since it was established. So it makes sense that the Brethren have determined to hold a women's session this time around for the Saturday Evening portion of General Conference.

Also, in new guidelines released today, the First Presidency is directing area presidencies in each of the 22 areas of the Church to evaluate local COVID-19 conditions, to consult with qualified medical experts, and to make determinations therefrom about necessary protocols going forward. But the First Presidency is also continuing to request that masks be worn from the moment patrons or workers enter the temple to the moment in which they are outside the temple walls. This is for the purpose of protecting most temple workers, as a majority thereof are either older and/or immunocompromised. The information on the latest directives from the First Presidency are available from the following sources:

    https://newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org/article/first-presidency-updates-covid-19-guidelines

    https://www.thechurchnews.com/leaders-and-ministry/2022-02-18/first-presidency-covid-mask-policies-area-stake-presidencies-church-temples-243566

And the newest group of 16 biographies have been provided for those who will begin overseeing 16 more missions around the world, effective July 1:

    https://www.thechurchnews.com/callings/2022-02-18/missionary-leaders-brazil-bolivia-salt-lake-city-south-africa-nashville-mexico-243099

I am still evaluating information on my end in terms of reconfiguring my General Conference predictions, but I will have those updates posted once that process is complete. In the meantime, my thanks once again to you all.

    1. And as reported yesterday or today by the Church Temples site, the rezoning application for the site of the Ephraim Utah Temple was recently approved, which hopefully means that temple could be one of the next to have a groundbreaking:

      https://churchofjesuschristtemples.org/ephraim-utah-temple/

I am also hoping we might soon see announcements on the groundbreakings for the Belo Horizonte Brazil and Elko Nevada Temples, among others. Stay tuned for more on that as additional information is revealed. In the meantime, my thanks once again to you all.

  4. I have clicked through on both of the Classic Map Links you linked, and on classic maps, neither Cagayan de Oro nor Russia are showing anywhere. Did they get removed? And did anyone happen to record the location for the Russia one? Because now I am really curious.

I heard from a fairly good source a couple of years ago that, as of then, the Church did not own the property they intended to build Managua on, and were having difficulty in acquiring it.

Typically, locations on Google Maps are added by anyone in the world who wants to. The location may have been added by someone who knows, but it could equally been added by speculation. Case in point, shortly after Greater Guatemala City temple was announced, a location appeared on Google Earth on an open field in the Guatemalan city of Amatitlan. When the location was officially announced, it is actually some 12 miles to the north of Amatitlan.

The Managua pin on Google Earth is a pretty site, though. It would look good for a temple!

    1. Hey, Brian. Thanks for weighing in here. The links I obtained can still be found in the comments at this link:

      https://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=2786908254617003646&postID=2700861326662615158

For Cagayan de Oro and Russia specifically, I believe that thread mentioned that the location was only visible through Google maps. So if you were looking to access that location through the Church's Classic Maps system, it wouldn't be found. You'll find more specifics about the Google Maps coordinates on that thread. I only shared the Classic Maps links for those that had been confirmed as shareable for classic maps. Sorry I didn't make that more clear in my post above. Please let me know if you have any follow-up questions, and thanks for weighing in here.

    2. Hmmm. The only link for russia I could find in the comment thread opens classic maps to an empty farm field about 30 miles northwest of Moscow. Is that the correct location? There is a couple of tiny little communities there, seams so out of the way.

Interesting tidbit on Russia (That you likely already knew,) back in April of last year, it showed up on the Church's official list of Temples as "Russia Administration Building." It was like that for a couple of months, but I totally envisioned another Hong Kong/Manhattan Temple from that. I was expecting a bit more of a dense neighborhood, I guess!

    3. Brian, if you go to the "Classic Maps" site and type in "Russia Temple", that may give you better results. That search term leads to a specific branch building where, interestingly, only an "Acting Branch Leader" is listed in that case. While it will, of course, require an official announcement to verify anything on this matter, if the Church is far enough along on approvals for the Russia Temple to include it in any way on Classic Maps, that's a good sign. The flip side of that, of course, is that with the volatile situation at the Ukraine border presently, that could slow down. But based on my own research and feedback from others, I think we can expect to hear something about that temple sooner rather than later. Hope this additional information helps.

    4. But short of a First Presidency announcement, the identification of a "correct location" may be a nonstarter anyways.

    5. Also, on the Cagayan de Oro Philippines Temple, running a search on that term leads to results including the stake and mission for that city, and the institute and seminary facilities. If that turns out to be the general region of that temple, it wouldn't shock me if each of these separate facilities was combined into a single building to serve all of those needs as part of the process of constructing the Cagayan de Oro Philippines Temple. Just some additional thoughts for you on your questions. Hope they are helpful. Thanks again, Brian.

    6. Weirdly, searching Russia Temple gives me the same field as your link. No building. I would love to hear something on this soon, but have had the same thought as you about Ukraine slowing things down.

With the announcement of the Shanghai Temple, and the specification it would be a multipurpose building, I have wondered how many other multipurpose temples they might intend to build. Hong Kong and Manhattan were built that way because of land price issues, Shanghai might be the same.

The chance that Russia might be one, I think would be more because it simplifies some things in a country and with a government that is not favorable to religion. Which also could be an argument for Shanghai being a single, all in one building as well.

With Cagayan, though, if they were wanting to combine facilities more, I wonder if we might see something more like what Tokyo, Bangkok, and Bengaluru have, with the large multipurpose support building, rather than an all-in-one temple.

    7. Hey, Brian. Thanks for your comment here as well. It did occur to me to even wonder if, depending on what happens with Ukraine and Russia between now and April, there might be a need to look at possibly rescinding the announcement for the time being until the dust settles on this. I hope it won't come to that, but I did have that thought. Good points on the temples for Russia, Shanghai, and Cagayan de Oro. I'm wondering if the Church might use a similar design for the Dubai temple as well, though I don't anticipate they'd shift from administering the Middle East/Africa North Area from headquarters. I appreciate your insights on Tokyo, Bangkok, and Bengaluru as well. Thanks, as always, for weighing in.

In addition to my life-long love for the subjects which I cover in the posts of this blog, I have long held the belief that we can disagree without becoming disagreeable. Differences of opinion are natural, while being disagreeable in expressing those differences is not. And in that sense, I have no desire to close the door on anyone who earnestly desires to contribute to the ongoing dialogue on subjects covered in the posts on this blog.

At the same time, however, I recognize that we live in a time when incivility, discourtesy, unkindness, and even cyber-bullying has regrettably become part of online interactions. With that in mind, while anyone who wishes can comment on anything if they choose to do so, I hereby reserve the right to immediately delete any comments which are critical, unkind, lack civility, or promote prodcuts, services, and values contrary to either the Church, or to the rules of online etiquette.

If such individuals do not wish to disclose their actual given names, a pseudonym or nickname would suffice.

Any comments made by individuals who opt to not give a name by which they can ber identified may, depending on the substance and tone of such comments, be subject to deletion as well. I would respectfully ask that all of us do all we can to keep the dialogue positive, polite, and without malice or ill-will. May the Lord bless us all in our discussion of these important matters.
