BREAKING NEWS: 2022 Days of '47 KSL Parade Makes History

Hello again, everyone! KSL just shared a major new report regarding how the 2022 "Days of '47" KSL Parade will make history. As some of you are no doubt aware, for a long time, members of the First Presidency rotated the assignment to serve as grand marshal of that parade. In recent years, two members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles did so (Acting President M. Russell Ballard, who has prominent pioneer ancestry, and Elder Ronald A. Rasband, who, at that time, had apostolic supervisory oversight for the Utah Area).

Elder Craig C. Christensen, who served for several years as the president of the Utah Area of the Church, also served as the grand marshal of the parade one year. Today, in a teaser for a story coming during the 6:30 PM newscast, KSL showed longtime religion reporter Carole Mikita with outgoing Relief Society General President Sister Jean B. Bingham, with the voiceover description indicating that the story would cover how this year's parade grand marshal will make history.

I am pleased to thereby confirm that Sister Bingham will fill that role this year, as one of the last (if not the very last) public appearances she will make as Relief Society General President before her release becomes effective August 1. This is another example of the Brethren publicly acknowledging the important role of Latter-day Saint women in the Church. Although this will be the first time the Church does this, I have no doubts it will not be the last, and I look forward to seeing when it will happen next.

I am grateful to have been able to learn of and pass along this news. I continue to monitor all Church news updates and temple developments and will be sure to pass word of those along to you all as I become aware thereof. In the meantime, that does it for now. All comments are, as always, welcome and appreciated, on any post at any time, as long as the offered feedback is made per the established guidelines. Thank you for the privilege of your time.

I hope any of you who would like to share anything will take your opportunity to “sound off” in the comments below. If you enjoyed what you read here and would like to stay informed of newly added content, please feel free to subscribe. Until my next post, I wish each one of you all the best and pray that the Lord will bless you all in everything you do.

And Church President Russell M. Nelson took to social media to share a message about labels:

And a new report from the Pacific Newsroom shares details of a visit between Elder Ian S. Ardern and the president of Fiji:

    3. Hello again, everyone! On this Thursday, as we head into Pioneer Day weekend here in Utah, the Church News has shared inspiring pioneer stories from each current member of the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles:

      https://www.thechurchnews.com/leaders-and-ministry/2022-07-21/apostles-family-pioneer-stories-president-ballard-261550

Elder Dale G. Renlund of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles was the featured guest at an EFY conference held at the Univeristy of Utah campus for youth from the Utah Area of the Church:

      https://www.thechurchnews.com/leaders-and-ministry/2022-07-21/elder-renlund-fsy-university-of-utah-meeting-youth-one-by-one-262318

The apostle was accompanied by his wife, Sister Ruth L. Renlund and Sister Rebecca L. (Becky) Craven, Second Counselor in the Young Women General Presidency and Brother Bradley R. (Brad) Wilcox, Second Counselor in the Young Men General Presidency. Elder and Sister Renlund also had visited the University of Utah campus the week before, again appearing at an EFY event held then. During the earlier visit, the Renlunds were accompanied by Young Women General President Sister Bonnie H. Cordon and Young Men General President Brother Steven J. Lund. That one article covered both appearances by the Renlunds.

The Church News also covered the BYU-Idaho graduation, at which President Henry B. Eyring, Second Counselor in the First Presidency, was the keynote speaker. He was accompanied by Elder Clark G. Gilbert, the GA Seventy and current Commissioner of Church Education. And for reasons that aren’t spelled out in the article, BYU-Idaho President Henry J. Eyring, the son of the First Presidency member, had prerecorded his remarks for delivery in conjunction with the talks of the two general Church leaders:

      https://www.thechurchnews.com/leaders-and-ministry/2022-07-21/byu-idaho-commencement-graduation-president-henry-b-eyring-counsels-byuidaho-graduates-lifetime-of-learning-personal-revelation-262272

This marks what I believe is the first time that two members of the First Presidency have been out on assignments away from Church headquarters at the same time since the onset of the pandemic. One final Church News report shares details of a service project the Church has helped out with in Central Africa:

      https://www.thechurchnews.com/global/2022-07-21/church-refurbishes-badiadingi-institute-kinshasa-democratic-republic-congo-donates-desks-sewing-machines-school-classrooms-262245

I will monitor the Church News and Newsroom for any additional updates and will be sure to pass those along to you all here as I receive those, and I will bring any temple construction updates to you later today as time allows. For now, my thanks once again to you all.

    4. As we finish out the workweek, on this day before the "Days of '47" KSL Parade occurs, the Church News has reported that Elder Uchtdorf apparently made another visit to an FSY conference, this one in Seattle Washington:

      https://www.thechurchnews.com/leaders-and-ministry/2022-07-22/elder-dieter-uchtdorf-seattle-fsy-conference-savior-apostle-262503

Apparently, Elder Uchtdorf and his wife were in the area for a family reunion and decided to surprise participants at that FSY gathering by making an appearance there. As some of you might recall, when Elder Uchtdorf was giving his second General Conference talk as a new apostle in April 2005, he mentioned that some of his family were still in Germany. Apparently that has changed. Accompanying the Uchtdorfs to their FSY appearance were their son Guido Uchtdorf and their daughter, Antje Uchtdorf Evans. 4 of their grandchildren were also with them: Eric Evans and Robin, Jasmine, and Niklas Uchtdorf.

So it appears that, while July is still technically a recess and assignment transition month for General Authorities and General Officers of the Church, that, where opportunity or the Spirit prompts them to do so, leaders of the Church can and do make public appearances at events or Church functions or meetings. And given the reports lately on how many FSY gatherings for which the Uchtdorfs have made an appearance, that is one thing they really want to do as often as possible. That makes sense, as Elder Uchtdorf now chairs the Priesthood and Family Executive Council, which, at the general level, coordinates details on the units involved in each FSY conference.

The Church News also shared 3 things that incoming Primary General President Sister Susan H. Porter wants congregational leaders, especially Primary leaders and teachers, to know:

      https://www.thechurchnews.com/leaders-and-ministry/2022-07-22/3-things-president-porter-wants-primary-leaders-to-know-261814

And the Church News also reports that a former BYU soccer player has won the ESPY award:

      https://www.thechurchnews.com/members/2022-07-22/ashley-hatch-espy-espn-soccer-byu-team-usa-temple-washington-spirit-nwsl-262495

With no new reports from the Newsroom as yet today, if there are any new temple updates, or any additional updates from the Church News or Newsroom later today, I will be sure to pass those along here as time and circumstances allow. In the meantime, my thanks once again to you all.

    5. And the Church has responded to the discovery of a photograph (daguerreotype) that is believed to depict what the Prophet Joseph Smith looked like. It was discovered in an inherited heirloom by one of the direct-line descendants of the Prophet (his name is Daniel Larsen) who is a member of the Churchw. His nephew is Lachlan MacKay, who is a member of the Council of the Twelve Apostles in the Community of Christ. MacKay has ecclesiastical responsibility for the Joseph Smith HIstoric Site in Nauvoo Illinois, and he, with the help of a expert specializing in Smith family pictures, artifacts, and possessions. According to that expert, it is almost certain to be an authentic representation of the Prophet:

      https://www.thechurchnews.com/history-revisited/2022-07-22/church-statement-photo-of-joseph-smith-found-in-locket-262534

I believe that the Church News may have reported in the past that Daniel Larsen was a Church member and a direct-line descendant of the Prophet Joseph Smith, and I've mentioned in the past that the Church usually has at least one direct-line descendant of Hyrum Smith in the apostleship. It is possible that with Daniel Larsen being the only direct descendant of Brother Joseph, the Church could look to him as the next Smith-line descendant in the Quorum of the Twelve once the need arises. That being said, I personally hope, of course, that President Ballard will be around for many years to come.

And the Tabernacle Choir has appointed a new managing director:

Meanwhile, a new update has been provided today on the construction of the Puebla Mexico Temple:

Oaks Elder Neil L. Andersen of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles (from whom 2 posts were shared) was also featured, as were the following General Officers of the Church: Sisters Michelle D. Craig and Rebecca L. (Becky) Craven, the respective First and Second Counselors in the Young Women General Presidency; and Brother Bradley R. 2. On this day before Pioneer Day (with the state holiday for it being observed on Monday), the "Days of '47" KSL Parade was held. The Newsroom has shared a new report highlighting Sister Jean B. Bingham's role as this year's Grand Marshal:

    https://newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org/article/president-jean-b-bingham-pioneer-day-parade

While I was still prepring this comment for publication, the Church News provided its' own coverage on the "Days of '47" KSL Parade, and highlighting Sister Bingham's role as the first female Grand Marshal:

    https://www.thechurchnews.com/members/2022-07-23/see-photos-celebrating-175-years-of-pioneer-courage-at-the-days-of-47-parade-262149

Meanwhile, the Church News covered the inspiring story of a young man (born in Guam) who has spastic diplegia. He was converted to the Church and fbecame connected to a couple who eventually adopted him, and as a result of community support and assistance, he was able to participate in a recent youth pioneer trek:

    https://www.thechurchnews.com/members/2022-07-23/maryland-teen-cerebral-palsy-wheelchair-stake-youth-trek-20-miles-262280

As someone who has had the lifelong challenge of Cerebral Palsy, I find accounts like that particularly inspiring. I understand what that young man has gone through in his life, and am grateful to hear he has a supportive family, ward family, and community. That is something without which I probably wouldn't be as well off in my own situation as I am today.

Another article shares information about Church leaders who have participated in the Notre Dame Religious Liberty Summit, along with an explanation of what the summit is and why it matters to the Church and other religious participants:

    https://www.thechurchnews.com/living-faith/2022-07-23/notre-dame-religious-liberty-summit-president-oaks-dean-marcus-cole-law-school-262674

And the Church News has also shared the text of the message that will be given by Brother Lloyd D. Newell tomorrow as part of what I assume will be a Pioneer Day special edition of "Music & the Spoken Word":

    https://www.thechurchnews.com/living-faith/2022-07-23/music-and-the-spoken-word-neighbors-in-our-own-households-matthew-pioneer-day-262244

And Elder Lynn G. Robbins, a GA Seventy who served in the Presidency of the Seventy from April 2014-August 2018, and who will turn 70 in late October of this year (and will likely thus be granted emeritus status during the upcoming October 2022 General Conference) was the featured speaker at the Church's demisemiseptcentennial Sunrise Service, marking the 175th anniversary of the arrival of the pioneers into the Salt Lake Valley:

    1. Chris, as a St. George Utah native who still has family there, my dad has appreciated the intermittent updates I have shared with my parents on both the existing temple's renovation and the construction of the Red Cliffs Utah Temple. So I appreciate your desire to go see it, given your connections to that area. As far as the fire at the Orem Utah Temple, thanks for passing word of that to all of us here. But if I could, I'd like to make a request of you or anyone else sharing news and updates in comments here. Where possible, could you kindly leave links to articles verifying the details you're reporting? That's something I always try to do so people know where to find verification of what I'm reporting, and I hope my readers who hear about updates like this will extend that same courtesy to all of us here, including me.

I got a breaking news alert about this from KSL's mobile app just about the time you were posting your comment. Since you were unable to provide links to the verification of this information, I will do so now, but again, where possible, if any new reports from anyone who comments here could include where to find the information, it would be appreciated. 1. I forgot to reiterate that the time windows mentioned are for the completion of those temples, which may be at least a few months before their actual dedications or rededications. With that in mind, by the end of this year, we may only see the rededication of the Columbus Ohio Temple and the dedications of the San Juan Puerto Rico and Saratoga Springs Utah Temples. That in turn will impact how soon other temples lower in the queue might be dedicated or rededicated. My thanks once again to you all.

    1. It looks like we can see up to 20 dedications next year (including St. George rededication). I think that would make 2023 the year with 2nd most temple dedications, after 2000's 34. Hopefully supply chain issues can be resolved soon.

      Delete
    2. Noah, that is currently the case, but the overall queue has seen overhauls a few times this year alone, and the estimated completion of temples in 2023 has seen adjustments at least 5-6 times at minimum. In reevaluating specific estimates I've previously offered, I'm currently predicting the dedication of 15 new temples and the rededication of 2 others by this time next year, and the dedications of 5 or 6 others by the end of next year, but that too could be subject to change. Thanks again for taking time to comment.

      https://www.thechurchnews.com/23283247/chaplain-latter-day-saint-military-air-force-jeremy-jaggi-jenna-carson-byu-harvard

My wife and i were both a little surprised it took this long for that to happen. But as the article noted, she will not be the last female appointed as a military chaplain. It is nice to see the Church acknowledging the contributions of women in the Church in yet another major milestone. Another new Church News report shares information about the next Friend-to-Friend event, which was prerecorded and will debut tomorrow at 10:00 AM MDT. The event will focus on the temple, and will feature Elder Gary E. Stevenson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and the Primary General Presidency (I am assuming that will be the incoming leaders: Sisters Susan B. Porter, Amy A. Wright, and Tracy Y. Browning):

I am assuming the latest edition of "This Week on Social" will be published later this afternoon or evening. If there are any other Church News or Newsroom updates or temple construction reports, I will pass those along to you al as time and circumstances allow. Thanks again, everyone!

  10. On this Saturday, the latest edition of "This Week on Social" was published. It included messages from the outgoing Primary General Presidency (Sisters Camille N. Johnson, Susan H. Porter, and Amy A. Wright), who were featured in the Friend-to-Friend prerecorded broadcast. Sister Johnson, who will begin serving as Relief Society General President effective Monday August 1, mentioned that she appreciated being able to spend her final days as Primary General President filming that broadcast. I believe I mentioned previously that my theory was that the new Primary General Presidency (which includes Sisters Porter and Wright and new Second Counselor Sister Tracy Y. Browning) would handle that Friend-to-Friend broadcast, but it makes sense that Sisters Johnson, Porter, and Wright did so as they prepare to transition to new assignments.

This week's featured posts also included a pioneer focus with thoughts from Acting President M. Russell Ballard and Elder D. Todd Christofferson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, who were both in attendance at the recent dedication of the monument honoring Black pioneers who came to the Salt Lake Valley with the earliest pioneer companies. Also featured were posts on other topics from Elders David A. Bednar and Gary E. Stevenson, also of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles; outgoing Relief Society General President Sister Jean B. Bingham, who posted a video with her incoming successor, Sister Camille N.. Johnson; Brother Milton Camargo, First Counselor in the Sunday School General Presidency; and Young Men General President Brother Steven J. Lund. You can find those social media posts in the following article:

    https://www.thechurchnews.com/2022/7/30/23283864/this-week-on-social-testimonies-truth-shared-church-leaders-black-pioneers-monument-friend-to-friend

Another new article from Church News editor Sister Sarah Jane Weaver was also published:

    https://www.thechurchnews.com/2022/7/30/23281526/sarah-jane-weaver-feeling-accountability-to-god-and-linking-arms-to-help-those-need-rome-refugees

And the Church News also shared a report on this morning's Friend-to-Friend broadcast:

    https://www.thechurchnews.com/2022/7/29/23283650/watch-friend-to-friend-broadcast-temples-primary-children-covenant-path-stevenson-japan

And the upcoming broadcast of "Music & the Spoken Word" will include a focus on the Choir's roots, with a special message previously recorded in Wales:

If there are any other updates from the Church News or the Newsroom or on the construction status of any temples around the world, I will pass those along as I find out about them. For now, my thanks once again to you all.

    2. I should perhaps have mentioned that, since we are nearing the August 1 window for assignment changes, even if Elder Curtis is granted emeritus status during the October 2022 General Conference, I am assuming he will continue to serve as Church Historian and Recorder, since he has only served as such for 3 years. My thanks once again to you all.

Insofar as I am aware, the general leaders at Church headquarters are in the process of assignment transitions, with changes going into effect tomorrow. I assume, therefore, that the earliest any new breaking news could be reported is Tuesday or Wednesday of this week. I will keep my eyes open for any such updates, and will bring them to you all here as I become aware thereof. My thanks once again to you all.

    5. Hello again, everyone! The following Church News reports speak for themselves:

And updates have been noted on the status of the Saratoga Springs Utah, Abidjan Ivory Coast, Harare Zimbabwe, and Salt Lake Temples:

      https://churchofjesuschristtemples.org/saratoga-springs-utah-temple/

      https://churchofjesuschristtemples.org/abidjan-ivory-coast-temple/

      https://churchofjesuschristtemples.org/salt-lake-temple/

With reference to the update on Utah County’s next temple to be dedicated, the update today might indicate that opening arrangements could be announced for that temple soon. Whether or not that will be before, after, or in conjunction with the announcement of opening arrangements for the San Juan Puerto Rico Temple and reopening arrangements for the Columbus Ohio Temple may have yet to be seen. Above and beyond that, updates have been noted on the general completion estimates for several temples now under construction or undergoing renovations, as reflected in the following updated document:

      https://docs.google.com/document/d/1L7HBLNZZTnlI4Dk8fpr3HZCf-wqkjUBcCCYqdxP7HRk/edit?usp=sharing

It’s also worth noting that today is the official day on which Church assignments are being updated. The new Relief Society and Primary General Presidencies’ changes are now effective, as are the area leadership and committee assignment changes at Church headquarters. I will have more updates on that as they are provided. For now, my thanks once again to you all.

    3. There has been a new update provided on the Puebla Mexico Temple:

      https://churchofjesuschristtemples.org/puebla-mexico-temple/

As a result of this update, the Church Temples site has moved that temple up from being the first temple estimated to be completed in early-to-mid 2024 to being the fourth temple anticipated to be completed sometime in late 2023. That leaves only the San Pedro Sula Honduras Temple with an estimated general completion window of early-to-mid 2024.

Here is my updated document with the general completion estimates for all temples now under construction or undergoing renovation:

In addition to my life-long love for the subjects which I cover in the posts of this blog, I have long held the belief that we can disagree without becoming disagreeable. Differences of opinion are natural, while being disagreeable in expressing those differences is not. And in that sense, I have no desire to close the door on anyone who earnestly desires to contribute to the ongoing dialogue on subjects covered in the posts on this blog.

At the same time, however, I recognize that we live in a time when incivility, discourtesy, unkindness, and even cyber-bullying has regrettably become part of online interactions. With that in mind, while anyone who wishes can comment on anything if they choose to do so, I hereby reserve the right to immediately delete any comments which are critical, unkind, lack civility, or promote prodcuts, services, and values contrary to either the Church, or to the rules of online etiquette.

I'd also like to remind all who comment here that I try to respond personally to each individual comment as I feel is appropriate. Such replies are not meant to end the conversation, but to acknowledge earnest feedback as it is submitted.

And in order to better preserve the spirit and pure intentions for which this blog was established, I also hereby request that anyone not commenting with a regular user name (particularly those whose comments appear under the "Unknown" or "Anonymous" monikers, give the rest of us a name to work with in addressing any replies. If such individuals do not wish to disclose their actual given names, a pseudonym or nickname would suffice.

Any comments made by individuals who opt to not give a name by which they can ber identified may, depending on the substance and tone of such comments, be subject to deletion as well. I would respectfully ask that all of us do all we can to keep the dialogue positive, polite, and without malice or ill-will. May the Lord bless us all in our discussion of these important matters.
