BREAKING NEWS: Elder Holland Resumes Full-Time Ministry; Update on Current Apostolic Milestones

Hello again, everyone! In view of President Eyring's 90th birthday yesterday, the Church now has 4 nonagenarian apostles serving for the first time in Church history. In a surprising update, an essay written by Elder Jeffrey R. Holland highlights the blessing of having older, more mature leaders in the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

Elder Holland's article referenced a small gathering for President Eyring's birthday, which means the article served as confirmation that Elder Holland has officially resumed his full-time apostolic ministry following his recent medical leave. Aside from that good news update, the Church News also reports that, as of today, the current group of 15 apostles in the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles is officially the sixth-longest tenured group in Church history.

That update does not match the data I shared in my last apostolic milestone update, which indicated that the current group of 15 apostles actually moved up to the sixth spot on that list on April 27 of this year. I think that can be explained by using a different criteria for calculating that than I used, but I'm not sure on that. It is true they remain in the sixth spot now, and they will move up to the fifth spot on that list of apostolic groups in August. I am grateful to have learned of these key updates and to pass them along to you all here.

I continue to monitor all Church News, Newsroom, and temple construction updates and will bring word of those to you all here as I become aware thereof. In the meantime, that does it for now. All comments are, as always, welcome and appreciated on any post at any time, as long as the offered feedback is made per the established guidelines.

I hope any of you who would like to share anything will take your opportunity to “sound off” in the comments below. Please subscribe if you liked what you read here and would like to be informed of newly-added posts and comments. Thank you for the privilege of your time. Until my next post, I wish you all the best and pray that the Lord will bless you all in everything you do.

  1. Per updates from the Newsroom and the Church News, the Church has updated its' guidelines and resources relating to the institutional political neutraility of the Church. Elder D. Todd Christofferson recently took an apostolic ministry trip to Australia. And cleanup continues in Guam as Typhoon Mawar is shifting towards Japan. Any new temple construction updates will be shared later today, in addition to anything else new from the Newsroom and the Church News. For now, my thanks once again to you all.

    1. The Church News has released another video in honor of President Eyring's 90th birthday. Additionally, a new update on the Orem Utah Temple indicates that the open house and dedication committee coordinator(s) have been called. Hopefully that means the opening arrangements might soon be announced.

And an official update indicates that the San Diego California Temple will close for renovation on July 31, 2023. It appears that the Kona Hawaii Temple will close for its' renovation immediately following the October General Conference. And the page for the Toronto Ontario Temple has been updated to show that that temple's closure will occur between Monday, October 23 of this year to Monday, June 17 of next year. So the Toronto closure won't be a full renovation necessitating a new open house and rededication. I am consequently going to remove that temple from my temple construction progress report. My thanks once again to you all.

    2. On this Friday, the Church News has published several new reports. The first highlights an overview of 56 new couples called to serve as temple leaders within the last 8 months. For an analysis on my list, see this breakdown. In other news, Elder Gary E. Stevenson continued his Brazilian ministry and a summary of Brazilian humanitarian and volunteer projects in 2022.

The Newsroom and the the Church News have announced that a Spanish edition of "Music & the Spoken Word" will premiere at the end of this month. For the time being, it will include music in English, with an eventual transition to Spanish music. Four individuals have been tapped by the Church to host those broadcasts, including being the voice of a Spanish recording the "Spoken Word" message by Lloyd Newell. A Portuguese edition will follow later this year.

FamilySearch is preparing to celebrate Juneteenth. And the latest edition of "This Week on Social" has been published. The general Church leaders featured in this edition included: Elders Neil L. Andersen, Ronald A. Rasband (from whom 2 posts were featured) and Gary E. Stevenson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles; Relief Society General President Camille N. Johnson and her Second Counselor, Sister Kristin M. Yee; Sister Amy A. Wright, First Counselor in the Primary General Presidency; and Brother Bradley R. (Brad) Wilcox, the First Counselor in the Young Men General Presidency whom the article incorrectly calls the Second Counselor. My thanks once again to you all.

    3. Due to dealing with some additional health challenges in the last 36 hours or so, Saturday has come and gone without any new content from me. But early on this Sabbath morning, I wanted to pass along the Church News updates that were published on Saturday. A first introduces incoming Young Women General President Emily Belle Freeman, while a second shares insights from Church News Editor Sister Sarah Jane Weaver on the link between sacrifice, consecration, and the temple, a third describes how Latter-day Saints in Central America are following the Savior's example of service, a fourth sends out a call from the Church for Church members with musical talent of any kind to participate in paid and volunteer opportuities and a final one shares the message that will be given by Brother Lloyd D. Newell during tomorrow's "Music & the Spoken Word".

Additionally, updates have been noted on the status of the Orem Utah and Mendoza Argentina Temples. And the Casper Wyoming and Urdaneta Philippines temples have swapped spots on the queue yet again, with the Casper temple now being the last estimated to be completed in mid-to-late 2023, and the Urdaneta temple is now the only one anticipated to be completed in late 2023.

My thanks once again to you all.

  2. I'm not sure how the essay by Elder Holland is confirmation that he had resumed his duties. What made you say that?

    1. Three things: Elder Holland was excused from all duties for at least two months. Having an essay featured on the Newsroom indicates he was present for the approval and publication of it. Secondly, he referenced a "modest birthday celebration" for President Eyring's 90th birthday, which was the day before Elder Hollands essay was published. How would Elder Holland be in a position to know about and reference such a celebration, and how would he have been able to write and publish such an essay unless he was present for both? And finally, the statement on Elder Holland's health saying he would be on leave for at least two months has not been updated to say that's been extended. So logically, on these three points, it's the only conclusion to draw. To whom may I offer thanks for this inquiry?

  3. On this Sabbath Day, the Newsroom and the Church News have repoted on the rededication of the Columbus Ohio Temple. As a result of my ongoing bouts with illness and how busy I've been, I completely spaced that today was the day on which that occurred. But I'm glad the Church has shared reports on that.

Additionally, ten new stake presidencies have been called, a former influential Primary teacher in Uruguay recently reconnected with some of her students, and the latest Week in Review, highlighting the top 9 developments covered by the Church News over the last 7 days.

    1. Aside from that, there appears to be something weird going on with the Church of Jesus Christ Temples site. It now lists 57 temples as "Scheduled for dedication", and lists a date of December 1969 by each temple in the construction queue, with empty spaces above the status of each that read "Public open house" and "Dedication". Not sure why that is. But I'm sure it will be fixed in the next week. In the interim, the latest status update on the Orem Utah Temple leads me to believe that one of the major temple announcements this week (note that I said "one of") will be the opening arrangements for the Orem Utah Temple. Although it is possible the Church could still dedicate that temple in October, it seems more likely that the earliest date for that dedication could be November 12. If that is set for November 12, 19, or 26, then the dedication of the Red Clfifs Utah Temple could follow on November 26 or December 17 of this year (it would likely not be set for December 10, since the Church is already rededicating the St. George Utah Temple on that day), or possibly January 14 of next year.

Then starting in 2024, I wouldn't be shocked to see at least two temple dedications per month every month, which may continue through at least 2026. But if I am correct that the opening arrangements for the Orem Utah Temple is not the only major temple construction update we will see, it could be possible for the Church to also announce groundbreakings for at least a few more temples. Teton River Idaho, Fort Worth Texas, Cody Wyoming, Modesto California, and Knoxville Tennessee top my list.

      Delete
    2. There are 7 additional temples with sites confirmed and renderings released that could be up for a groundbreaking, and it's also possible that renderings and/or groundbreakings could also be forthcoming for the 19 other temples that have had site locations confirmed. We also can't rule out the Church confirming a site, releasing a rendering, and setting a groundbreaking all at the same time. And any of the 44 other temples in various phases could have official details announced as well.

We also don't know yet if the Tuesday announcement last week makes it the new standard day of the week for temple updates or if the Church only did that last week due to Memorial Day last Monday. But I will be sure to post updates either today, tomorrow, or any other day of this week whenever such an announcement is made. My thanks once again to you all.

  4. My mom thought that Layton Temple had a dedication date announced. However, the church then added additional insulation due to the air base. I can not confirm that. Any truth to that?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That is not correct. The next temple to have a dedication set will be Orem Utah, followed by Red Cliffs Utah and Lima Peru Los Olivos. Then Puebla Mexico, and the announcement on Layton will only come after that.

Based on what I have observed on my end, the earliest an announcement on Layton will come will likely be 1-2 months from now, at minimum. The earliest window for its' likely dedication would be February of next year. But that's the earliest. It's difficult for me to reply to a comment when I don't know to whom I'm replying. Since I am trying to address your question, to whom may I offer thanks for the inquiry?

      Delete
    2. I should add that if the announcement of the dedications of any of the temples ahead of Layton is delayed beyond what I project, the dedication of the Layton temple could potentially be later than February of next year.

Also, as a general note to those commenting anonymously, as explained in my comment form, I reserve the right to delete any comments or comment threads beginning with any commenting anonymously if they opt to not identify themselves in some way when requested. I hate the idea of having to enforce that, but I have been targeted bullied, and have had real personal details about my life leaked at times by anonymous people on the internet. So for my own peace of mind, I hope my anonymous readers and commenters would respect me and that situation enough to identify yourselves in some way, even with a nickname or pseudonym. I'd rather not have to consider deleting comments in cases like this, but I can only tolerate internet anonymity to a certain point here because I have been targeted and bullied in the past. So I hope my anonymous commenters will respect my situation enough to identify yourselves in some way. Otherwise, I'll do what I have to to help myself feel safe. Thanks.

I commented the way I did because I didn't want my mom to feel bad, but also know you stay up on the latest developments. Thanks!

    5. Nate, thanks for that. No, there was never an announcement on Layton. Layton has always been at least 5 temples down in the queue, and Orem, Red Cliffs, and Los Olivos were all actually behind Layton at some point. There are almost daily shifts in the construction queue now. There are other temples below Layton that could feasibly move ahead of it as well. And for some reason, the Church appears to be taking a slower approach to announcing temple openings. Orem, Los Olivos, and Red Cliffs are in the next cluster for temple announcements, with all 3 likely in the next 3 weeks or less. I've put Puebla, Layton, and Salta in the next cluster, with Taylorsville, Coban, Casper, and Urdaneta in the cluster after that. Hope that answers your question, Nate. Great to hear from you again.

    6. As for my health, we just get one issue partway sorted before one or more other things go haywire health wise, so it's frustrating. But being involved with this blog has been a huge reliever of that associated stress. So thanks again.

  5. On this Monday, the Church News has shares several new reports: the first describes how the Church collaborates with a coalition of disaster response organizations, the second highlights the newest temples in the Pacific Coast states, a third shares how outgoing Young Women General President Sister Bonnie H. Cordon addressed Latter-day Saint cadets at the Air Force Academy, and a fourth shares how an NFL athlete and Latter-day Saint (Kyle Van Noy) has discovered anew the power of prayer in the wake of his son's health challenges..

The final two articles cover yesterday's rededication of the Columbus Ohio Temple. First is the text of the dedicatory prayer offered by President Ballard, and second is an article discussing how the youth in that temple district banded together to build a path that literally leads to the temple. Since the Church made no temple announcement today during the 2:00 PM hour, I'm assuming that means they have shifted such announcements to Tuesdays so as to not interfere with Memorial Day, Labor Day, or other holidays that will fall on a Monday going forward. My thanks once again to you all.

    1. A few days ago, Elder Holland's featured essay highlighting the benefits of having seasoned leaders in the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles had me convinced that he had begun to resume his apostolic ministry. A social media update from Elder Holland today confirms he is gradually returning to his full-time ministry. So that is the official update on him. If any subsequent updates are made, they will, of course, be shared here as well.

In the meantime, we are about 2.5 hours away from the anticipated time in which the Church may share the latest temple construction update. I will provide coverage on that announcement once it is made. For now, the Church News has shared an update on how the Church's JustServe program is helping with wildfire recovery in Alberta Canada. My thanks once again to you all.

    2. The Church has revised and expanded its' statement about politics, including an emphasis on the political neutrality of the Church as an institution. My thanks once again to you all.

    4. The Church News also covered Elder Soares' ministry in South America. And two Church historians were the featured guests for today's edition of the Church News podcast.

Aside from these updates, if my theory is correct, we should be getting the next major temple construction announcement during the 2:00 PM hour here in Utah. If and when that happens, you can count on full analysis of that update ASAP once I learn about it. For now, my thanks once again to you all.

    7. On this Wednesday, unless a major temple update is released today, tomorrow, or Friday, the Church may be skipping such an announcement for this week. That being said, I do have a somewhat suprising development to note in temple construction right off the bat today. A new report from Peru indicates that stake and mission leaderswere given a tour of that temple on Sunday June 4. I assume that was done to allow those stake and mission leaders to prepare their congregants for the opportunity to tour the temple themselves, or to lead such tours, once the opning arrangements for that temple are announced. That temple now skyrockets to the top of the current construction queue. The Los Olivos Temple is now followed by Orem Utah and Red Cliffs Utah. I will evaluate what this adjustment means for the data and projections I have shared and will pass updates along ASAP.

In the interim, the Church News highlights modern-day piooners who constitute a recently-established Mandarin-speaking branch within the boundaries of the Plano Texas Stake. The Church News also reported on Latter-day Saint twin brothers who graduated this year as the respective valedictorian and salutatorian of their South Carolina High School. The two come from a long line of top-teir academic achievement, with many in their family tree having previously been valedictorians in their respective high schools or colleges.

So there are, as always, a lot of moving parts when it comes to Church news and temple updates. I am attempting to monitor all such developments, and I will be sure to pass along updates as I am able to receive, analyze, and pass them along. For now, my thanks once again to you all.

    8. Status updates have also been noted for the Red Cliffs Utah and Puebla Mexico Temples today. Based on the most recent updates for the Lima Peru Los Olivos and Orem and Red Cliffs Utah Temples, it occurred to me to wonder whether the Church might opt to announce opening arrangements for all 3 of those temples at the same time, And I will add that I now anticipate the dedication of the Los Olivos Temple to occur in late October or early November, with Orem and Red Cliffs also occurring in November. If the Church sets up the scheduling in that way, then an additional 1 or 2 temples could be dedicated before the end of the year. The two Ifor which I think that could happen are the Puebla Mexico and Layton Utah Temples.

I didn''t see anything else jump out at me as far as temple construction updates, but I will monitor those today and pass anything else that is newly-noted ASAP. I will also do likewise with updates from the Church News and the Newsroom. For now, thanks again everyone!

    9. One other thing I nearly forgot to mention: for the last little while, the Casper Wyoming and Urdaneta Philippines Temples have alternated positions and general completion estimates. Whichever temple has been the first between the two has had an estimate of mid-to-late 2023, with the other having an estimate of late 2023. That has been altered yet again, with Urdaneta again being listed before Casper. I have a feeling we are in for surprises whenever the next temple(s) have opening arrangements set, especially since that generally shfits the estimates for temples immediately below them in the queue. I also believe that the Puebla Mexico Temple may soon have major construction completed as well. My thanks once again to you all.

From around the world, Relief Society sisters have shared experiences they had based on Sister Camille N. Johnsons'ss talk from the Sunday Morning Session of last General Conference. Those women provide an additional witness that Jesus Christ Is Relief. A new president and matron have been announced for the Port-au-Prince Haiti Temple, The new president is a current area seventy who will be released on or before August 1, and he and his wife have served in a variety of callings and assignments in the Church. The latest update to my document tracking temples for which new leaders have been or will be announced has been updated accordingly.

An updated Church News video highlights insights from Elder Jeffrey R. Holland and his wife Patricia on how health challenges have brought them closer to the Lord. And two Church historians/writers have completed a multi-year project about the Mountain Meadows Massacre..

I will pass along any other Church News, Newsroom, or temple construction updates later today as time and circumstances allow. For now, my thanks once again to you all.

    1. The construction status for the Grand Junction Colorado Temple has been updated. And the Church Temples site today moved the Layotn Utah Temple from its' former position in the queue, which was beneath the Puebla Mexico Temple, to now being immediately above it. What that means is that the Orem, Red Clfifs, and Layton temples are now seuqentially in that order. So could 3 apostles dedicate each of these temples on the same day? And when might that happen? As mentioned earlier, the Lima Peru Los Olivos Temple is now at the forefront of the queue of 3 temples completed and awaiting an announcement of their opening arrangements. I could see the Church scheduling the Los Olivos Temple for dedication in late October or early November, which would then enable the Orem and Red Cliffs Utah temples to be dedicated in November and December, with Layton following in either December of this year or January of next year. Stay tuned for more on all of this as announcements are made and the logisitics are set in stone. For now. my thanks once again to you all.

  8. At the end of what has been a very busy Friday for me, I am pleased to share that the Newsroom and the Church News have reported on the last leg of Elder Soares' South American ministry, which concluded in Argentina, where he spoke to gloal religious leaders on the importance of human dignity in the midst of this changing world.

Meanwhile, in a Palmyra devotional; Church historians discussed the Joseph Smith Papers Project and the reforestation efforts at the Hill Cumorah; young adult Latter-day Saints will support the special olympics at the World Games in Berlin; and BYU-Pathway Worldwide continues expanding into Africa, where it is now available in Ethiopia.

And finally, the latest edition of "This Week on Social" has been published. The general leaders featured in this latest edition included Acting President M. Russell Ballard and Elders Jeffrey R. Holland, Dieter F. Uchtdorf, David A. Bednar, Gerrit W. Gong, and Ulisses Soares, all of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles (with two posts apiece shared by Elders Uchtdorf and Soares); Relief Society General President Camille N. Johnson; outgoing Young Women General President Bonne H. Cordon and her respectively-outgoing First and Second Counselors, Sisters Michelle D. Craig and Rebecca L. (Becky) Craven; Primary General President Susan H. Porter and her Second Counselor, Sister Tracy Y. Lloyd Newell, who offers that message every week, will use the text of that message during this weekend's broadcast. And a Church member in Montana has sewn 1,400 dresses for children in need. Given the fact that the Church will break ground for two more temples this Saturday, more groundbreakings could be scheduled. We have 12 temples for which groundbreakings might soon be announced. And there are 19 others for which sites have been announced but exterior renderings have not yet been released, nor have groundbreakings been set. The Church could also release site locations and exterior renderings and set groundbreakings for one or more temples in a single announcement. 11. On this Monday, the Newsroom and the Church News have shared information about the Bentonville Arkansas Temple. Media tours are underway today, and VIP tours will follow between Tuesday and Friday of this week. The public open house formally begins on Saturday (the same day on which ground will be broken for the Montpelier Idaho and Belo Horizonte Brazil Temples), and will run through Saturday, July 1. Elder David A. Bednar, who spent several years in that area and has numerous connections to it, is leading the initial tours, and he will dedicate that temple on September 17 (the same day as the Brasilia Brazil and Moses Lake Wawshington Temples are dedicated).

In the meantime, we are roughly 25-40 minutes away from the next anticipated major temple announcement (if Monday is still the standard day for it). I will be monitoring the Newsroom for that update and will publish an initial version of a post covering whatever the news is ASAP after it is announced. In addition to my life-long love for the subjects which I cover in the posts of this blog, I have long held the belief that we can disagree without becoming disagreeable. Differences of opinion are natural, while being disagreeable in expressing those differences is not. And in that sense, I have no desire to close the door on anyone who earnestly desires to contribute to the ongoing dialogue on subjects covered in the posts on this blog.

At the same time, however, I recognize that we live in a time when incivility, discourtesy, unkindness, and even cyber-bullying has regrettably become part of online interactions. With that in mind, while anyone who wishes can comment on anything if they choose to do so, I hereby reserve the right to immediately delete any comments which are critical, unkind, lack civility, or promote prodcuts, services, and values contrary to either the Church, or to the rules of online etiquette.

I'd also like to remind all who comment here that I try to respond personally to each individual comment as I feel is appropriate. Such replies are not meant to end the conversation, but to acknowledge earnest feedback as it is submitted.

And in order to better preserve the spirit and pure intentions for which this blog was established, I also hereby request that anyone not commenting with a regular user name (particularly those whose comments appear under the "Unknown" or "Anonymous" monikers, give the rest of us a name to work with in addressing any replies. If such individuals do not wish to disclose their actual given names, a pseudonym or nickname would suffice.

Any comments made by individuals who opt to not give a name by which they can ber identified may, depending on the substance and tone of such comments, be subject to deletion as well. I would respectfully ask that all of us do all we can to keep the dialogue positive, polite, and without malice or ill-will. May the Lord bless us all in our discussion of these important matters.
