Hello again, everyone! With today being May 20, Elder Gérald Caussé is observing his first apostolic birthday since his November 6, 2025, call and ordination to the apostleship. So it is time to share a birthday tribute to him, as he is observing his 63rd birthday today. Let's dive right into his extensive and impressive biography: Gérald Jéan Caussé was born on May 20, 1963, in Bordeaux, France, to Jean and Marie-Blanche Caussé. The missionaries found his parents a short time after Gérald was born.
His penchant for quick learning and voracious curiosity led to many early opportunities for young Gérald. At age 12, he was the pianist in Primary. Two years later, he became both the branch pianist and a counselor in the ward Sunday School organization. He also made ministering visits with his father to various people in their time of need, and he joined the missionaries often to teach people about the Gospel.
Gérald also found success in his educational endeavors. Following his graduation from high school, he rigorously prepared for entrance into any of the top universities in France, being determined to prioritize his faith and Church membership and activity. During his oral exams, which included an interview with panels of various universities, he was asked questions that directly led to him sharing more about his faith, and about what he believed, why he believed it, and how his beliefs had shaped his life.
After one such interview, one of the interviewers told him he had a friend who was a member of the Church, so he wanted to give Gérald a chance to answer questions about his faith and his commitment thereunto. He entered his university studies with honors. During the same period of time, Gérald renewed his acquaintance with Valérie Babin, a childhood friend. One day, during a choir practice, she was singing, and he was accompanying, and their eyes met in what they called "a second for all eternity". They were married in the Bern Switzerland Temple in 1986.
Upon his graduation from college, Gérald began a 7-year career in management consulting, successfully aiding many companies to avoid bankruptcy. He served as a counselor in a stake presidency during that time. When the time approached for the release of the stake presidency, both Gérald and Valérie discerned that he would be the new stake president, and Gérald sought (and obtained) a less demanding job that would free up his schedule for his new calling. He landed a new position with a family-friendly company just two days before he was sustained as the new stake president.
President Caussé served as stake president during a period of time when the Church was looking to procure a temple site in Paris. He chauffeured President Hinckley to several candidate sites over several trips to the region until they found and procured the site on which the Paris France Temple operates. In 2008, new Church President Thomas S. Monson called him to serve as a GA Seventy. Beginning the following August, he served in the Europe Area Presidency in Germany, first as a counselor, then as the area president. His two counselors, Elders Jose A. Teiexera and Erich W. Kopischke, spoke highly of him.
In 2012, with the release of the Presiding Bishopric planned, a new Presiding Bishopric was needed. Elder Caussé was called to serve alongside Presiding Bishop Gary E. Stevenson and Bishop Dean M. Davies. They served together for only 3.5 years, when Presiding Bishop Stevenson was called to the Quorum of the Twelve. Bishop Caussé succeeded him as the Presiding Bishop, serving as such for just over a decade. He was closely involved with the construction approvals for the Rome Italy and Paris France Temples.
And, as we know, on November 6, 2025, he was called to the apostleship. He is the first apostle born in France. Elder Caussé has spoken 9 times in General Conference: once as a GA Seventy, twice as First Counselor in the Presiding Bishopric, 5 times as Presiding Bishop, and, of course, once since his apostolic call. I know this overview has been quite extensive, but I hope it serves as a fitting tribute to the man who makes history as the first French apostle and brings a significant background in business and Church service to his role.
He, as all the other apostles do, has voluntarily pledged to serve the Lord to the best of his ability until his dying breath. And his life demonstrates that the Lord has well prepared him for this exact opportunity he now has. Given that I have always loved the French language, Elder Causse, as the first General Authority and now the first apostle born in France, has long been one of my favorite people in the top leadership tiers of the Church.
I gratefully testify that the Lord has called him, and that I fully sustain him in his new assignment and look forward to seeing what the Lord will do through him. I am grateful I could pay tribute to him here. I invite you all to stay tuned here for my coverage of the latest updates from the Church News, Newsroom, and Church of Jesus Christ Temples sites. I’ll be sure to pass word of those along to you all as soon as I learn about them. In the meantime, that does it for now.

The Church News has posted this tribute for Elder Causse's birthday today.. My thanks once again to you all.
ReplyDeleteIn addition to the birthday tribute to Elder Causse, a few other new reports have been published: the Church has made a significant donation to the UNICEF's child nutrition initative, matching a similar donation made last year. The Church News has also shared study and teaching resources for the April 2026 General Conference talk by Sister Kristin M. Yee. At an interfaith event in Northern Texas, Elder Kevin G. Brown spoke at a Unity interfaith event on the subject of temples. And Elder Clark G. Gilbert recently conversed at Church headquarters with the Africa West Area Presidency.
DeleteAs part of their conversation, Elder Gilbert disclosed that he has been assigned apostolic oversight for the Africa West Area. I believe this is the first time in a long time that we've had direct confirmation of an apostolic area assignment. I wish we had more information about apostolic assignments, but it appears that there has been a major reshuffling of assignments following the setting apart of President Uchtdorf as the Quorum's Acting President. I have previously assumed that if an apostle is sent to do an annual area review, or to visit leaders and members in any geographical area, that they had some degree of apostolic oversight for those areas. Given the concrete confirmation in that last report, hopefully other apostolic assignments will be specifically detailed in this same way. For now, I'm glad we have this confirmation. My thanks once again to you all.
Elder Neil L. Andersen of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles counseled young adults in California to follow President Oaks' four suggestions to stay on the gospel path. And the presidents of BYU-Provo and Taylor University discussed how faith fits into higher education. My thanks once agian to you all.
DeleteOn this Thursday afternoon, the Newsroom and the Church News have officially confirmed that President D. Todd Christofferson, Second Counselor in the First Presidency, will preside at the dedication of the Yorba Linda California Temple on Sunday, June 7. I believe he may have some connection to the area the temple will serve.. Accompanying President Christofferson will be Elder Steven R. Bangerter, Exectuvei Director of the Temple Departmernt; and Elders I. Raymond Egbo (who may be an Aisstant Executiive Director of the Temple Department); and Takashi Wada, who serves as the President of the United States West Area. Each of these named brethren will be accompanied by their respective wives. More updates will follow whosrtly. My thanks once again to you all.
DeleteOne thing I forgot to mention above is that the Yorba Linda California Temple will also be dedicated on the same date (and at roughly the same time) as the Willamette Valley Oregon Temple is being dedicated by President Dieter F. Uchtdorf. I said "roughly the same time" because both temples are in the same time zone. So it may be hard to know which one is the first to be dedicated. But it will be good to have both of those temples dedicated on June 7.
DeleteOther Church News updates have been provided: study and teaching resources for the April 2026 General Conference talk by Elder Clark G. Gilbert. Two members of the Presidency of the Seventy (Senior President Elder Carl B. Cook and Elder Edward Dube) have recently ministered to the Saints in the Africa Central Area (Elder Cook in March and Elder Dube in April). Meanwhile, this month, outgoing Primary General President Susan H. Porter and her outgoing Second Counselor, Sister Tracy Y. Browning are currently ministering in Mexico. My thanks once again to you all.
And this just in from the Church News: following the successful treatment of his cancer, BYU-Hawaii President John S. K. Kauwe III will reassume his role as BYU-Hawaii President (he also serves as an area seventy) in July. In conjunction with President Kauwe's return, President R. Kelly Haws, the Interim BYU-Hawaii President who covered for President Kauwe, will now assume the role of BYU-Hawaii Academic Vice President. At that point, Vice President Haws is expected to vacate his role as Secretary to the Church Boards of Education and the Board of Trustees, My thanks once again to you all.
DeletePresident Christofferson's assignment has been added to my document showing apostolic temple dedications and rededications under President Oaks; prophetic tenure. My thanks once again to you all.
DeleteJames, I was also unsure which temple would be 218 or 219, and it seems it's also unclear on the church temple site. However, reading the fact sheet for the Yorba Linda Temple specifically says it will be the 219th temple, so even though both dedications will begin at 10:00 AM, the Willamette Valley Temple is officially listed before Yorba Linda.

Noah, that's a great find! Thanks for that insight. It somehow makes sense that the Yorba Linda California Temple will be 219. That follows the international dateline. Thanks again for that clarification. I always appreciate hearing from you.
DeleteFurther, I read the fact sheet for the Willamette Valley Oregon Temple, and it notes that the temple will be the 218th dedicated temple. I'm glad the press kits settle these questions. Thanks again, Noah, for taking time to comment. I always appreciate hearing from you.
DeleteOn this Friday, the Church News has provided only a couple of new reports: studying and teaching resources for the April 2026 General Conference talk by Elder David A. Bednar; Church-sponsored clinics and training pograms are strengthening healthcare in the South Pacific' and the latest edition of "This WEek on Social", featuring social media content from the following general Church leaders:
ReplyDeleteChurch President Dallin H. Oaks and his Second Counselor, President D. Todd Christofferson; Elders Quentin L. Cook, Neil L. Andersen, Gerrit W. Gong, Ulisses Soares, Gérald Caussé, and Clark G. Gilbert of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles; Relief Society General President Camille N. Johnson and her First Counselor, Sister J. Anette Dennis (from whom several posts were linked); and Sister Tracy Y. Browning, the outgoing Second Counselor in the Relief Society General Presidency.
My thanks once again to you all.
An update has been noted on the status of the Wellington New Zealand Temple. Insofar as I have been able to ascertain, there are no other temple construction status updates at this time. My thanks once again to you all.
DeleteElder Renlund is ministering in the South America Northwest Area, which may indicate he has some degree of apostolic oversight for that area. My thanks once again to you all.
DeleteOn this Saturday, the Church News has introduced new GA Seventy ElderJames O. Fantone; learning to treat others like "we belong to each other"; the text of the message written by Brother Derrick Porter for tomorrow's historic 5,045th episode of "Music & the Spoken Word". And there is also a masterpage now for the study and teaching resourceses of every talk given during the April 2026 Geenral Conference.
DeleteWith no new updates from the Newsroom, it's worth noting here that today is the final day of the open house for the Yorba Linda California Temple, for which we got this announcement on Thursday. My thanks once again to you all.
I had a very busy Sunday, which is why there were no new comments then. That being said, let's get into the updates from both Sunday and today. We start with the reports from Sunday: a service mission offers a life-chainging experience; the First Presidency took a tour of the new Humanitarian Center in Salt Lake City prior to its; dedication and subsequent open house; children learn about prophets in the May Friend-to-Friend event featuring Elder Gerrit W. Gong and the outgoing Primary General Presidency; the top ten developments from the Church News were recapped in this week's iteration of "In Case You Missed It: Week in Review; and, with this week's Gospel study centering on 10 chapters in Judges (Judges 2-4; 6-8; and 13-16), see what Church leaders have taught about those key chapters.
DeleteThat brings us to today's updates: Elder Lance B. Wickman, an emeritus GA Seventy, offered a Memorial Day tribute" to "comrades in arms" who didn't come home; study and teaching resources were provided for the April 2026 General Conference talk by Elder Michael John U. Teh; 20 stake presidencies were recently called (for 2 new stakes, the 18 others were reorganizations); an FSY event empowers youth to walk with Christ; and the origin story is told for the new hymn "Elijah and the Still, Small Voice:"..
My thanks once again to you all.
Since yesterday was Memorial Day here in the United States, there was no major temple construction news released then. It seems probable that some news on that front is likely to be made during the 2:00 PM hour here in Utah, so stay tuned for my coverage of that within the next couple of hours, if such an announcement is made during that hour. In the interim, the Newsroom has provided a couple of apostolic ministry updates: Elder Gerrit W. Gong spoke about how, with a moral compass, artificial intelligence offers the gift of possibilities. That was the theme of his speech at the Athens Summit. Two of Elder Gong's apostolic colleagues, Elders Quentin L. Cook and Clark G. Gilbert held a historic broadcast originating in the Hyde Park Chapel in England and broadcast to all units in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Part of what made this trip (and the broadcast) historic is that it was the first international trip for Elder Gilbert since his call to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.
DeleteMeanwhile, from the Church News comes study and teaching resources for the April 2026 General Conference talk by Elder Jorge T. Becerra. Representatives from the Church (Elder Edward Dube of the Presidency of the Seventy and Sister J. Anette Dennis, First Counselor in the Relief Society General Presidency) met with representatives from the International Organization for Migration. And in the latest edition of the Church News podcast , Mary Richards sits down with Elder David P. Homer, a GA Seventy who is the Executive Director of the Priesthood and Family Department, to discuss the upcoming changes to the Sunday schedule that will be effective June 1.
Temple news, if any, will be shared here ASAP during the 2:00 PM MDT hour once that announcement is made. My thanks once again to you all.
