1400th Blog Post: BREAKING NEWS: Official Statement from President Nelson Underscores Correct Terminology for the Church and Its' Members

Hello again, everyone! In this, my 1,400th post on this blog, I am pleased to be able to pass along a breaking news developments just reported a short while ago. Mormon Newsroom has shared this official statement from President Nelson which reemphasizes the importance of using the proper terminology when referring to the Church and to ourselves as members thereof. While more details on this are forthcoming, the Mormon Newsroom style guide has been updated to reflect the changes President Nelson has felt impressed to reemphasize.

We have previously heard comments from Sister Nelson to the effect that the number of times President Nelson rises in the middle of the night to write down impressions about the Church and its' members has dramatically increased since he became Church President 7 months ago. This is yet another in the series of insights which I am sure he will continue to share with us as members.

The number of official changes and statements released within these last 7 months should put to rest any claim that modern revelation is not occurring in this Church. I welcome and heartily embrace and endorse this revelation from our beloved prophet, and I would encourage us all to do everything we can to implement this divine instruction into our daily interactions with each other and our friends of other faiths immediately.

I will continue to monitor this development in the days ahead, and will do my level best to pass along more information as I become aware of it. That does it for this post. Any and all comments are, as always, welcome and appreciated. Thank you for the privilege of your time. If you enjoyed what you read here and would like to stay informed of newly-added content, please feel free to subscribe. Until my next post, I wish each one of you all the best and pray that the Lord will bless you all in everything you do.

  1. This is quite an announcement! Of course, when I first heard it I thought, this isn't new, we have heard this before. But, I think that this announcement means that there are changes that will be coming. Right now, much of the branding for the church is based on Mormon and LDS, because those terms are short and convenient. But as President Nelson has said, they are not the best terms. I look forward to seeing more changes in this regard that will make the naming of the church and its related branding more focused on Jesus Christ.

  2. Hi, Nate! Thanks for stopping by to comment. You are correct. This, much like the "new" ministering program announced last April, is more of a reiteration of what should be occurring than it is a new idea. I have previously referenced how the approach Elder Holland recommended in the October 2016 Priesthood Session was clearly not taken as more than a suggestion, so making it the official policy then became necessary.

The Church News just ran the following article, which, as you noted, demonstrates how President Nelson's directive is not new:

    https://www.ldschurchnews.com/leaders-and-ministry/2018-08-17/6-reasons-why-the-full-name-of-the-church-of-jesus-christ-of-latter-day-saints-is-important-47813

This again seems to be a case where things said previously were not taken as more than a mere suggestion, and I appreciate the fact that the wording of the statement from President Nelson leaves no doubt that it is the Lord's desire for us to conform to what has been previously counseled and directed in this regard.

That is part of why it boggles my mind a bit that some people both in and out of the Church have seemed more inclined to be set in their previous ways than to follow the direction of our prophet. And I also do not in any way concur with the objections that 24 hours after this statement was issued, not that much has changed. It is clear that President Nelson has had this on his mind for a while, and the wording of the statement he released was clear on the fact that the preliminary work to implement his counsel on the matter is underway. It seems more than a little unreasonable to me that some seem to expect that everything that will be affected by this directive has not changed in the 24 hours since the statement was released. As I observed elsewhere, depending on how much advanced notice President Nelson gave the general Church leaders before issuing the statement, it may be a while before all available resources, departments, policies, and procedures are updated to reflect his counsel. I for one am more than content to wait for that to unfold, for more details to be released, as President Nelson promised, and to do what I can to personally implement this directive into my daily practice. I hope all who read that statement and the comments on it will do the same. Thanks again, Nate!

  3. Sorry. Just reread my comment. In the last paragraph, the wording should have said "It seems more than a little unreasonable to me that some seem to expect that everything that will be affected by this directive should have changed within 24 hours after the statement was released. Guess I should do a better job of proofreading my own content before I add it here to either posts or my comments thereon.

  4. I like the date desperation of posts. I hate the white wash background. Too hard on the eyes.

  6. Hey, Kenny! Just wanted to let you know that I am reworking the view settings for mobile layout. I am in the process of having my wife look it over. Hopefully the changes I have made thus far have fixed the issue you described. If not, please feel free to let me know. Thanks again.

In addition to my life-long love for the subjects which I cover in the posts of this blog, I have long held the belief that we can disagree without becoming disagreeable. Differences of opinion are natural, while being disagreeable in expressing those differences is not. And in that sense, I have no desire to close the door on anyone who earnestly desires to contribute to the ongoing dialogue on subjects covered in the posts on this blog.

At the same time, however, I recognize that we live in a time when incivility, discourtesy, unkindness, and even cyber-bullying has regrettably become part of online interactions. With that in mind, while anyone who wishes can comment on anything if they choose to do so, I hereby reserve the right to immediately delete any comments which are critical, unkind, lack civility, or promote prodcuts, services, and values contrary to either the Church, or to the rules of online etiquette.

I'd also like to remind all who comment here that I try to respond personally to each individual comment as I feel is appropriate. Such replies are not meant to end the conversation, but to acknowledge earnest feedback as it is submitted.

And in order to better preserve the spirit and pure intentions for which this blog was established, I also hereby request that anyone not commenting with a regular user name (particularly those whose comments appear under the "Unknown" or "Anonymous" monikers, give the rest of us a name to work with in addressing any replies. If such individuals do not wish to disclose their actual given names, a pseudonym or nickname would suffice.

Any comments made by individuals who opt to not give a name by which they can ber identified may, depending on the substance and tone of such comments, be subject to deletion as well. I would respectfully ask that all of us do all we can to keep the dialogue positive, polite, and without malice or ill-will. May the Lord bless us all in our discussion of these important matters.
