The Current Number of General Authority Seventies

Hello again, everyone! In the comments made in response to my post highlighting the changes in general Church leadership that were announced by President Oaks at the beginning of the Saturday Afternoon Session, the observation was made that he may have been in error on the number of current General Authorities.

President Oaks had stated there were 116 currently serving General Authorities. What that means is that, in addition to those 25 men who serve in the First Presidency, Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, Presidency of the Seventy, and Presiding Bishopric, there should be 91 General Authority Seventies. Some pointed out that the list they keep only has 90 men listed. In checking my own list, I discovered that there are indeed 91 men serving as General Authority Seventies, which means that President Oaks was correct in saying there are now 116 men serving as General Authorities.

In order to verify that number, and to comply with Blogger formats, the easiest way in which I could share my list is to copy and paste the latest version of my list. It is divided into 3 columns and 10 full rows, with the final man on an additional row.

Before setting the context for this list, I should mention a couple of things: The last Deseret News Church Almanac (the 2013 edition) listed the numbering of the men who served in the First and Second Quorums of the Seventy as two separate groups, and numbered each according to the date on which these men were called to the Seventy. Generally that involved an alphabetical list by those dates, but there have been a few exceptions.

I also fully recognize that more men than are listed here have served in the First and Seccond Quorums of the Seventy. The numbering here reflects the dates of call for all of those serving currently, and any numbers and names not appearing on this list are not included for the reasons outlined above.

Additionally, until 2016, when the Church stopped publicly announcing to which Quorums newly-called Brethren were assigned, since a Quorum affiliation and distinction had been announced for all other Brethren called between 1994 and 2015, those called to the First and Second Quorums during that time are not listed in full alphabetical order, but first by Quorum assignment, then in alphabetical order within those Quorums. It may not be a perfect system, but it has worked for me.

When updating that list following General Conference, I realized (primarily because my own laptop is unbootable at the moment and because I had to retrieve this information from an old copy, which I subsequently updated) had many men on there that are now either in the Presidency of the Seventy, have been granted emeritus status, have passed away, or, in one case (James J. Hamula), had been excommunicated. I checked and double-checked the list to ensure that it was accurate, and unless I happened to overlook one man that should have been removed, I am reasonably confident in its' accuracy. That list follows below.

So as not to disturb the flow of it, I will end now as I always do. That does it for this post. Any and all comments are, as always, welcome and appreciated. Thank you for the privilege of your time. Until my next post, I wish each one of you all the best and pray that the Lord will bless you all in everything you do.

  1. Just realized I had forgotten to remove Elder Larry R. Lawrence from the list, which would suggest there are indeed only 90 General Authority Seventies. I am continuing to compare my list against others I have at my disposal. I will post another comment if and when I have anything further to add.

  2. I just edited this list and updated it. Based on that, it would appear that there are indeed 90 General Authority Seventies, which, when added to the 25 in the other positions I mentioned, makes 115 total General Authorities. So unless we all are missing something, President Oaks may indeed have been mistaken. That does happen.

  3. Another note on the list above: The men listed above includes those three who will be released from the Presidency of the Seventy in August, and, by extension, no longer includes the three who will be serving in the Presidency as of that month. It may also be worth noting that I don't believe I missed anyone, but if I did, that might explain the discrepancy more than President Oaks potentially making a mistake.

  4. Just double-checked both the numbers and the names. It seems unlikely that I have omitted anyone. It will be interesting to see if and how the Church might clarify and/or correct the number President Oaks provided.

  5. I am going to post the first prediction for October conference, Elder C. Scott Grow will be released from the Seventy. I am visiting Boise and have learned he is running for state Senator.

  6. Since he is going to be 70 next month, I can see that happening. FYI, I would also expected Elders Mervyn B. Arnold, Craig A. Cardon, Larry J. Echo Hawk, Allan F. Packer, and Gregory A. Schwitzer will all be released as well. All of them will be 70 before the end of 2018. Next year, we will also see several others granted emeritus status as well. Looking ahead to 2020, there will likely only be two released and granted emeritus status. It is interesting that Elder Grow is thinking of entering politics once his service concludes. Thanks for letting me know.

  7. You can add Elder Claudio D. Zivic to that list, he turns 70 in December.

  8. I'm sure I knew that. Can't believe I forgot about him. But that is absolutely correct. I was curious, so I just checked on it, and the birth dates for Elders Zivic and Cardon are 11 days apart in December, with Elder Zivic on December 19 and 30.

But an interesting question just came to mind. Before asking that question, I wanted to provide the background information that made me wonder about it: I know we have a number of General Authority Seventies that died while actively serving as such, and I also know that there have been some instances where a General Authority was granted emeritus status prior to turning 70, if only in consideration of their health and well being. A recent example of this is Elder Bruce A. Carlson, who was released and granted emeritus status in the October 2015 General Conference, but will only apparently turn 70 in 2019.

With that in mind, since you mentioned you keep track of such things and are working on a database of such information, how likely is it that the Church could opt to release anyone else who would be turning 70 in 2019 or 2020? Looking ahead to those who fall under that description, as far as I know, the only one for whom I was not able to find any assignment is Lawrence E. Corbridge. I look forward to your thoughts on that. Thanks.

  9. Well, I've only had this database since 2015, and in that time only one other GA 70 got emeritus status early, namely Elder Jairo Mazzagardi in 2016 at the age of 69. I don't really know the reason for either him or Elder Carlson's early release. The only other one I specifically remember was in the 1990's when Elder Andrew W. Peterson was given emeritus status at about the age of 50 after a bad motorcycle accident, and then died a couple years later.

However, you made another suggestion as well. I have compared the list of those who will turn 70 in 2019 and 2020 with the assignments just announced, with the following results:
there are 9 who turn 70 in 2019, Elders Andersen, Clark, Corbridge, Claudio Costa, Foster, Haleck, Hallstrom, Snow and Wilson. Of those 9 only Andersen, Costa and Haleck (I didn't see him in your list but double-checked the article and saw him listed as President of the Pacific area) received assignments in this announcement. You probably know about other assignments some have- isn't Elder Clark Commissioner of Education, for example?

As for 2020, I only see three GA 70's who will turn 70 that year: Elder L. Whitney Clayton (currently Senior President of the 70), Falabella (received an assignment in this announcement) and Maynes, who was not on the list.

I'm not sure I've answered your question but I hope I've contributed some valuable information.

  10. Thanks for what you shared above. I knew about Elders Carlson, Mazzagardi & Peterson. While we don't know the exact & specific reasoning in each case, I can hazard a guess about Elder Carlson. He served in the Air Force prior to becoming a GA Seventy. If my understanding is correct, retired military members can at times be requested to come back and fill special assignments at the discretion of those in command posts. If such a request was made for Elder Carlson, I could see the Church accommodating that.

That said, the reason I didn't list Elder Haleck above is bbecause the list only shows changes in area leadership. He continues as Pacific Area President; since that has not changed from last year, he is not on the above list.

I know it has been customary for new assignments to be given in the week after April General Conference, and that the bios on LDS.org reflect the changes soon after, and I am anxious to see more information, particularly HQ assignments, and the "other assignments" President Ballard referenced that will be filled by the Presidency of the Seventy now that they are no longer supervising the North America areas. Stay tuned for more on that as I learn of it. Thanks.

  11. An additional note regarding the number of General Authority Seventies. If I have accounted correctly for everything, then it would appear from the Church's official list that, with the newest 8 not yet added, the number of GA Seventies on that list is 82. If we add those 8, the total is indeed 90, which, when added to the other 25 men, brings the total to 115. It could be that the data President Oaks shared was compiled prior to Elder Keetch's passing, but if that was the case, I would have thought he would have updated it in the interim. It will be interesting to see if and how the Church explains this.

On a separate note, it was awesome that the Solemn Assembly and Sustaining of Church Officers was done in two parts over two sessions, and I imagine the intent of that was to give both counselors in the First Presidency a chance to be part of that process. It was likewise interesting to see how many auxiliary presidency members we heard from, which I wasn't expecting.

And it was likewise interesting to me that the statistical report for 2017 was not presented during General Conference in the traditional spot it typically has. I would imagine (though I am not sure) that this will be a new practice going forward, and that the intent is to allow speakers in the Saturday Afternoon Session more time to speak. The main question I have is where in the Conference Ensign that report will be published. I don't imagine it will be included among the other addresses, since it was not presented during that time. It seems more likely to me that the Church will publish that report in the News of the Church section at the back of the Ensign.

This last General Conference was so full of developments I almost couldn't track them all. As a general note to you who read this comment, I wanted to advise you that I will be posting the results of my General Conference predictions at some point. But I recently had a computer crash, and between needing to replace it and get those documents I had saved elsewhere transferred to the new computer, I haven't had much time to do the usual analysis of those predictions. Just know that it is in the works, and will be posted ASAP. Thanks.

  12. Hey, twinnumerouno, quick question for you: Does the database you keep track information about area seventies, or just General Authority Seventies? The reason that I ask is that I have kept personal documents for several years detailing different data relating to current area seventies (one of which lists them alphabetically by geographical area according to the Quorum to which they are assigned, a second shows an alphabetical list of each of the 6 area seventies Quorums, and a final document which is a three column table showing the number of seventies in each area, the sum of that number to get the Quorum total, and a running total number of all area seventies).

As I noted in the latest blog post I put up today, I had my previous laptop crash & the process wiped out the data on the hard drive. So I have been attempting to piece back together much of the data I lost. Restoring the content of the three area seventies documents has been a challenge.

So I wondered if your database might show anything helpful to me in that regard. I realize that may be a long shot, but the only stupid questions are those that remain unasked. I will continue to work on getting those documents restored until I hear from you one way or the other. Thanks.

In addition to my life-long love for the subjects which I cover in the posts of this blog, I have long held the belief that we can disagree without becoming disagreeable.
