BREAKING NEWS: Church President Russell M. Nelson to Address BYU Students on September 17, 2019; Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf Will Rededicate the Frankfurt Germany Temple

Hello again, everyone! Breaking news has just been shared relating to the weekly BYU devotional/forum. With the Fall Semester 2019 Devotional Schedule that was previously released, there was not a live devotional or forum planned for Tuesday September 17. But the Church News has shared an invitation issued by Church President Russell M. Nelson, in view of his plans to address those on the BYU campus on Tuesday.

Given that he is the Chairman of the Church Educational System, it is not surprising he would opt to provide an unannounced address on a week in which nothing formal had previously been planned. The prophet's issued invitation was as follows: "I think about the issues facing young people daily. I feel inspired to share an important message with you on September 17 at 11:05 a.m. MDT. Please join me that day on the Church’s Facebook or YouTube account or http://ChurchofJesusChrist.org ."

Insofar as I am aware, a BYU devotional being broadcast live via the offical Church's website is unprecedented. And the wording of the invitation appears to indicate that he had not originally planned on this, but that he is again following the Spirit in doing so, and is enabling it to be carried live on the Church website for reasons that may only become apparent when he actually gives the address. Stay tuned for my coverage on that devotional.

If that were the only breaking news to share, I would be satisfied enough, but while putting a post together to cover that development, another Church News article, written to cover the beginning of the Frankfurt Germany Temple open house, shared the news that, as I anticipated, Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf will rededicate that temple.

That is fitting and proper. Not only is he our native German apostle, who has had experience dedicating and rededicating temples during his near-decade of service in the First Presidency, but the fact that he is also now a senior member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles seems to fit my theory that, for the time being, temples will continue to be rededicated by the more senior apostles (from President Nelson through Elder Christofferson).

With that in mind, I think it may be safe to assume that either President Oaks or Elder Christofferson (the latter of whom speaks fluent Spanish) may be sent to privately rededicate the Asuncion Paraguay Temple in November. I don't know what that might mean for the Arequipa Peru Temple dedication, but time will tell. I suppose President Oaks could be sent to take care of the Asuncion Paraguay rededication with a translator in tow, and then Elder Christofferson might dedicate the Arequipa Peru Temple. Stay tuned for more on that as I learn more about both events.

That does it for now. Any and all comments are, as always, welcome and appreciated, on any post at any time, as long as such comments are made in accordance with the established guidelines. Thank you for the privilege of your time. If you enjoyed what you read here and would like to stay informed of newly added content, please feel free to subscribe. Until my next post, I wish each one of you all the best and pray that the Lord will bless you all in everything you do.

  2. Hello again, everyone! The Church News published the latest edition of their ongoing series "This Week on Social" yesterday. Posts from the following leaders were highlighted:

Church President Russell M. Nelson (from whom 4 posts were shared) and his Second Counselor, President Henry B. Eyring; Elder Neil L. Andersen of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles; and Sister Becky Craven, Second Counselor in the Young Women General Presidency.

You can find a summary of those posts and links to the posts themselves at the following web address:

I also have some additional temple updates to pass along, and will do so in another comment in just a few minutes, For now, my thanks again to you all.

  3. Here are the temple updates I mentioned. First, given that it is now nearly 11:00 PM Lisbon Portugal time, the youth devotional has surely been held there. The first dedicatory session will get underway in around 10 hours. As soon as reports are available about the youth devotional and the dedication, I wlll be sure to pass that along.

In the meantime, I wanted to note an update on the Church's progress towards having 200 temples by or before the 200th anniversary of the Church's reestablishment (which will be observed on Saturday April 6, 2030). With the dedication of the Lisbon Portugal Temple tomorrow, there will be 34 temples remaining for the Church to dedicate by or before the date of the bicentennial anniversary. And since there will be 10.56 years between tomorrow and that date, the Church will need to dedicate an average 3.22 temples per year. And within the next year alone, 3 or 4 temples will be dedicated. During 2021, at least 6 others will almost certainly be dedicated. So by this time 2 years from now, the averages will likely look completely different. Therefore, there will easily be 200 temples by that bicentennial anniversary, and there could be several more than that.

That said, I have three other temple updates to share. At the Praia Cabo Verde Temple, where the site is being staked, while the structural fill dirt has been compacted, and preparations are underway to drive piles for the temple's foundation. Next, I have some great news: Full-scale construction is now underway on the Belem Brazil Temple, where forms are being set for the foundation footings. And finally, open house tours are officially underway for the Frankfurt Germany Temple, and open house tours will get underway for the Raleigh North Carolina Temple one week from now. Both open houses will conclude on September 28. I continue to monitor all Church news and temple updates and will pass word of those along to you all as I become aware of such things. In the meantime, my thanks once again to you all.

  4. Hello again, everyone! While I was waiting for reports to be shared on the youth devotional for the Lisbon Portugal Temple, I started to work on another revision of my future estimates for known temple events. And as I did so, in the process of doing research to help me present the best information possible in that respect, I was drawn again to the interview of President Nelson and Elder Cook by Brazilian media representatives as they were wrapping up their Pacific Ministry Tour.

As we know, during that interview, President Nelson indicated that new temples were among "other announcements" that would be coming. Based on that, I wanted to revise what I have said previously: although I do not anticipate a mass number of temples being announced next month, I would not be surprised if President Nelson provided preliminary information about his temple expansion plans, even if those plans are not detailed in full.

We already have the information that additional smaller temples in more remote areas are part of the plan, and based on the precedents set recently by the Yigo Guam, Praia Cabo Verde, and San Juan Puerto Rico Temples, which were able to have a groundbreaking occur within around 9 months of their announcements, with more smaller temples reportedly on the way, the one thing we don't know is the specifics of how the long-term ten-fold increase will be achieved.

A statement made on the Church Growth Blog from someone who knew someone who talked to both President Nelson and the head of the Temple Deparment indicated that the plan, at least for the moment, is for 19-20 new temples to be announced per year. At some point, I do believe a mass number of temples will be announced. But I now feel that, if nothing else, President Nelson may provide more preliminary information about his long-term plans to increase the number of temples ten-fold.

For now, therefore, I will stick to my estimate that 14-16 new temples may be announced next month, and that the number of temples announced each April and October will be incrementally increased from the number of temples announced the prior April and October. But I think we could get some more initial information about his plans from him personally next month in General Conference. Just wanted to provide more food for thought on that. Thanks.

  5. Hello again, everyone! The Church News and Newsroom have covered several additional developments. First, the Saturday meetings held in conjunction with Sunday's dedication of the Lisbon Portugal Temple, and coverage on the dedication itself:

    https://www.thechurchnews.com/leaders-and-ministry/2019-09-14/churchs-past-present-and-future-in-portugal-is-focus-as-elder-andersen-prepares-to-dedicate-temple-in-lisbon-160377

    https://www.thechurchnews.com/temples/2019-09-15/portugal-lisbon-temple-neil-andersen-160450

Next, the Church News editor, Sister Sarah Jane Weaver, shared how President Nelson's recently-completed Latin American ministry impacted the Church members in the nations he visited during that tour:

    https://www.thechurchnews.com/leaders-and-ministry/2019-09-15/president-nelson-guatamela-latam-ministry-160122

Also, due to the recent death of a mission president while he served in the Philippines, a current area seventy has been called to serve as the new mission president, which will almost certainly result in his release as an area seventy next month:

    https://www.thechurchnews.com/callings/2019-09-15/mission-leaders-philippines-callings-provo-160057

And while we're on the subject of missionary work, a companionship serving in Canada were seriously injured in a recent car accident:

    https://www.thechurchnews.com/callings/2019-09-15/mission-leaders-philippines-callings-provo-160057

President Oaks was the featured speaker this weekend at a multi-stake devotional for Saints in rural northeastern Arizona:

    https://www.thechurchnews.com/leaders-and-ministry/2019-09-15/president-oaks-arizona-lds-piesthood-160429

And finally, from the Church's official Newsroom comes a report of the Worldwide Devotional and Face-to_-Face event for young adults, which was held earlier this evening and featured Elder Ulisses Soares of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and Elder Craig C. Christensen, a General Authority Seventy currently serving as the Utah Area President:

    https://newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org/article/worldwide-devotional-young-adult-face-to-face-broadcast

I had the privilege of watching that broadcast, which was the first of its' kind at which Spanish and Poruguese was spoken in addition to English. It was powerful to see the way these Brethren and their wives carefully, thoughtfully, and profoundly spoke in addressing the chosen questions. Hopefully the multilingual event will be the first of many,

In the meantime, I will continue to monitor all Church news and temple updates and will bring word of tbose to you all as I receive it. In the meantime, thanks again,=.

My thanks once again to you all.

  7. Where would the most remote stakes be? Kirabati? Vanauatu? Ulaanbaatar? Or others? The first two are isolated islands have to either use a sea or air route. Ulaanbaatar can use air, or ground such as rail or bus to get to the nearest temples.

    ReplyDelete
  8. For those questions, Chris, I'd defer to Matt as the expert. There are plenty of remote locations throughout the Church. My comfort zone lies more in providi Bung a general list of locations for which I feel a temple could be announced than in trying to determine what could be defined as "remote". But from my comfort zone, I caN tell you, I would not be shocked to see temples in all of the locations you mentioned, since Kiribati, Vanuatu, and Mongolia were all on Matt's latest list of the top ten nations with the strongest Church presence that does not have a temple in any phase. Madagascar would qualify as remote as well, since that nation is entirely separated from the rest of the African continent. Just some food for though from what I can tell you there. Thanks, Chris!

The Church News likewise provided parallel coverage on the missionary death and President Nelson's address to BYU students and to young adults worldwide, but I will let any of you who are interested catch up on that coverage yourself:

    https://www.thechurchnews.com/

The one other thing I would like to note is that I had the privilege of watching the prophet's address live at home this morning, and I was touched by how forthright and clear President Nelson was. Watching the warmth on his face as he spoke, and how he interacted with those in attendance at the Marriott Center with waves and big smiles, and listening to his inspired counsel was an experience I will not soon forget.

As he spoke, I felt the Spirit strongly confirming that everything he was saying was absolutely true, and although I already had such a witness going into the devotional, I was grateful for the witness in the moment. I would echo the words of the prophet in urging anyone who reads my words here to pray and find out for themselves whether or not the words spoken by President Nelson and his apostolic colleagues are in accordance with the Lord's will for His people and for the world at this time. And for those who choose to do so with real intent, Moroni's promise given at the end of the Book of Mormon will take effect in relation to the words of those apostles. I know because I have received that witness myself numerous times, and it was reiterated with perfect clarity to me today. My thanks once again to you all.

  12. I had almost forgotten that another update has been reported on the Pocatello Idaho Temple, where the metal floor deck is being set; while the foundation is being backfilled; the parking lot and driveway curbing continues to be poured; and retaining wall structures are being built. Barring anything very unexpected, since the updates for the Pocatello temple have been far more consistent and noteworthy than the lack of progress on the Quito Ecuador Temple, the former temple will almost certainly be dedicated before the latter, though none of the sources available to me for such information have verified that as being the case.

As another general note, based on the progress (or the lack thereof) on the Praia Cabo Verde, Yigo Guam, San Juan Puerto Rico, Urdaneta Philippines, and Belem Brazil Temples, changes on the general or more specific estiamtes or both for the completion of those temples may also need to be adjusted one way or the other. Additionally, depending on how quickly things progress for the Saratoga Springs Utah and Puebla Mexico Temples in contrast with the Bangkok Thailand Temples, one or both of the former two could likely be dedicated before the latter.

Three other temple-related items I wanted to mention here: I continue to work as I can on a large-scale revision for my more specific estimates for known temple events, which I will hope to post on this blog for review before the end of this month. I also have another mini-series coming by way of comparative analysis on temple construction progress that has been made during this third quarter of 2019, which will be posted on this blog before the end of the month. Feedback on my list of potential temples which may be announced next month will continue to be accepted until midnight when September 30 becomes October 1.

And the final thing I wanted to note at this time is that I will be publishing the next apostolic milestone update this weekend. So stay tuned for all of that upcoming content, in addition to ongoing coverage of major Church news items and any other temple updates. Hopefully it won't be too long now before the open house and dedication arrangements are announced for the Rio de Janeiro Brazil Temple, along with the anticipated confirmation of the groundbreaking arrangements for the PUebla Mexico Temple. I am likewise hopeful that we will hear the announcement of arrangements for at least 3-4 other temple groundbreakings before the end of this year, if not more than that. I will stay on top of all of these developments. In the meantime, my ongoing and continued thanks to you all.

  13. Hello again, everyone! Earlier today, the Church announced the closure of the Guatemala City Guatemala Missionary Training Center (MTC) effective January of next year in order to enable more usage of the substantially larger MTC in Mexico. The manner in which the Guatemala MTC space may be repurposed for other uses is yet to be detrmined.

This continues the Church's ongoing efforts, under the direction of our beloved prophet, President Russsell M. Nelson, to reduce and simplify the work of the Church, and to ensure that the Church is being wise and prudent with the properties they own. You can read more on this development at the following web address:

    https://newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org/article/guatemala-missionary-training-center-closing

And with the Raleigh North Carolina Temple open house set to begin this Saturday, the Newsroom has released interior and exterior photographs thereof:

    https://newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org/article/raleigh-north-carolina-temple-opens-for-tours

But in relation to that released information, there was a surprising development. Insofar as I am aware, when both the Memphis Tennessee and Oklahoma City Oklahoma Temples were privately rededicated in May of this year, the Church stuck to its' plans of not having a youth devotional the night before. But in the information about the Raleigh North Carolina Temple, it was noted that a youth devotional will be held the night before the one-session private rededication, over which Acting President M. Russell Ballard of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles is set to preside. So this may be the start of a new tradition for temples that are privately rededicated: to have a youth devotional the night before, as has been the status quo for all other temples dedicated or rededicated. I will provide more insights on this as they are made available. In the meantime, as I noted in my prior comment, I have plans for quite a lot of content within the next week or two prior to General Conference. So stay tuned for that. In the meantime, my thanks once again to you all.

  14. Maybe converting the Gautamala MTC into a visitor center may be an option.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hey, Chris. Thanks for taking time to comment. I apologize for my delayed response. There are a few different options which I am sure the Church may look at in terms of how best to utilize either the building or the land on which it sits once the MTC closes. A visitor's center might be an option since the building is just less than a mile away from the temple. It could also be that space may be repurposed for mission and area offices, meetinghouse space, or perhaps be utilized in some way at some point in conjunction with a renovation of the temple which serves that city. Given that some other temples dedicated at around the same time period (during the mid-1980s) have been undeergoing renovation in the last few years, a temple renovation for the Guatemala City edifice seems almost certain at some point in the not-too-distant future.

Whatever might occur, I am sure the Brethren will be carefully deliberating and praying about how to best use the building and/or the land on which it sits, and I look forward to seeing how all of that pans out. In the meantime, thanks again, Chris, for taking time to comment. Always a pleasure to hear from you.

  15. With the initiative to drop the name or initials "LDS" any ideas for a possible name change for LDS Business College?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hey, Chris! My personal opinion: Since those initials in the name of the college are used in reference to the Latter-day Saints for whom the college was built, and not as a reference to the Church that owns and operates the college, since "Latter-day Saints" remains an acceptable way to refer to Church members and not the Church itself, a name change may not be needed for the college.

And the same may be true for LDS Hospital. That is, of course, no more or less than my own theory, and I have previously been wrong about other changes that have since been made. But FWIW, that's my reasoning on that. Thanks, Chris.

  20. A couple of months ago the church announced pre-approval for returning missionaries into the BYU Pathway Worldwide. Could they start and do the same thing for seminary students or soon to be graduating seniors around the world? I wonder if it could be offered as part of each ward or branches self-reliance and welfare program. This program has shown to lift both the temporal and especially spiritual areas of the lives of participants. Many may not do well in traditional education but will greatly benefit with pathway.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. This program is available to all ages and in over 130 countries around the world. I think around 80% of members are within an hour ride/drive of a weekly meeting location, the rest is online.

    2. Interesting theories, Chris! The one thing I keep going back and forth on is whether or not past precedent would dictate what is and is not announced during General Conference. A significant change to the Church Educational System in general or to BYU-Pathway Worldwide in particular might possibly fall under the category of the type of announcement made outside of General Conference, but I say that based on the timing of the most recent announcement in that respect. Perhaps the "other announcements" that are coming may not be anything any of us might currently see coming down the pike.

One way or another, we will find out more roughly two weeks from today, and I will be excited to see what actually winds up happening. Thanks, Chris!

      Delete
  21. That's true. I think almost half of major announcements the last two years may have been announced outside of conference. Or at least a sizable amount.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I actually think a majority of announcements made during President Nelson's prophetic administration were made outside of General Conference, but I would have to double-check that. The fact that President Nelson dropped a teaser towards the end of last month seems indicative of one or two large-scale developments, though what those might actually wind up being harder to figure out than initially believed. I am excited to see what happens there. In the meantime, thank you, Chris, for taking time to coment.

  22. Hello again, everyone! I have a couple of additional temple updates to pass along. First of all, with the time now being around 3:45 AM in Raleigh North Carolina, the one-week open house for that temple will begin in around 4.25 hours. Tours will go for 12 hours today and one week from today, and from 10:00 AM-8:00 PM Monday-Friday (with tour hours being referred to by Raleigh time).

Additionally, at the Belem Brazil Temple, while forms continue to be set for the footings, the construction crew has also begun to rough in the plumbing. I am still hopeful that full-scale efforts will begin on the new San Juan Puerto RIco and Lima Peru Los Olivos Temples, and on the renovation process for the Hong Kong China Temple, within the next month or two, and that we will also see at least 4-5 other temples have a groundbreaking during that time in addition to that of the already-announced Saratoga Springs Utah Temple and the yet-to-be-confirmed arrangements for the Puebla Mexico Temple. I will keep my eyes open for more information in that respect and pass it along here via either new comments or a new post.

And for those interested in the projects I am planning for this blog in the future, you can find that information in my comment from September 19 at 12:19 AM, which appears earlier in this thread. In the meantime, my thanks to you all for your continued interest and ongoing support.

  23. Hello again, everyone! Earlier today, the Newsroom shared the following report, which speaks for itself:

    https://newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org/article/sister-eubank-speaks-national-womens-conference-finland

And I wanted to additionally note here a change to my plans for posts in the immediate future on this blog. I have the latest apostolic milestone update ready for publication here within the next 2-3 hours, so that will be covered here as planned, and I had hoped to also provide updates to my specific estimates for known temple events in the near future, but in looking back at the history of posts on this blog, I published the last revision of those updates roughly one month ago. So I have decided to hold off for now on publishing that, but anticipate doing so within the next 4-6 weeks, by which time we may have more information on other temple groundbreakings that will need to be factored into those estimates. I appreciate your continued interest and support. Thank you.

Differences of opinion are natural, while being disagreeable in expressing those differences is not. And in that sense, I have no desire to close the door on anyone who earnestly desires to contribute to the ongoing dialogue on subjects covered in the posts on this blog.

At the same time, however, I recognize that we live in a time when incivility, discourtesy, unkindness, and even cyber-bullying has regrettably become part of online interactions. With that in mind, while anyone who wishes can comment on anything if they choose to do so, I hereby reserve the right to immediately delete any comments which are critical, unkind, lack civility, or promote prodcuts, services, and values contrary to either the Church, or to the rules of online etiquette.

I'd also like to remind all who comment here that I try to respond personally to each individual comment as I feel is appropriate. Such replies are not meant to end the conversation, but to acknowledge earnest feedback as it is submitted.

And in order to better preserve the spirit and pure intentions for which this blog was established, I also hereby request that anyone not commenting with a regular user name (particularly those whose comments appear under the "Unknown" or "Anonymous" monikers, give the rest of us a name to work with in addressing any replies. If such individuals do not wish to disclose their actual given names, a pseudonym or nickname would suffice.

Any comments made by individuals who opt to not give a name by which they can ber identified may, depending on the substance and tone of such comments, be subject to deletion as well. I would respectfully ask that all of us do all we can to keep the dialogue positive, polite, and without malice or ill-will. May the Lord bless us all in our discussion of these important matters.
