President Nelson Announces Press Conference/Message to Church Members

Hello again, everyone! I am posting with some interesting news. In this article, President Nelson announced he will be giving a special message over the internet and all Church-owned radio and television stations at 9:00 AM MST this Tuesday, followed by a press conference at 10:00 AM. I may be wrong in saying this (please let me know if I am), but I cannot recall a time in Church history where a senior apostle gave a special one-hour message to the entire Church like this one hour prior to a press conference in which he will likely take questions from the media and introduce his new counselors in the First Presidency. This was amazing to hear about. Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available. That does it for this post. Any and all comments are, as always, welcome and appreciated. Thank you for the privilege of your time. Until my next post, I wish each one of you all the best and pray that the Lord will bless you all in everything you do.

  1. This is a first as far as I am aware of. I can't imagine what the reason is. I can only think it would be a major policy change or announcement. My wife thought that he may not be the next prophet due to age, but I doubt that is the case.

    1. Hey, Scott. Thanks for taking time to comment. It would appear your wife and my wife might be on the same wavelength: my wife asked me what the odds were that President Nelson is not going to be the new Church president. There is a stipulation in the succession process where the senior apostle could designate someone else as the new Church president if he feels inspired to do so. But the Church also recently announced its intention to embrace technology more fully and to utilize it to reach Church members and other religiously-minded individuals. The Salt Lake Tribune published an article covering the announcement, and it sounds like the reason for the press conference will be to introduce the new First Presidency. Some have said President Nelson may right off the bat announce his First Presidency picks and those who will fill the vacancies in the Quorum of the Twelve, and while that might all occur, it appears that the meeting of the Twelve may take place on Sunday, and that President Nelson wants to address Church members right off the bat. Whether that is to announce policy changes, Church leadership changes, or anything else remains to be seen. But it is more likely than not that he is merely taking his first opportunity to address the Church as the new president prior to him and his counselors taking questions from the press. The link to the article in the Salt Lake Tribune follows. Thanks.

    2. Another thought just hit me: The announcement made during President Monson's administration about the Church's intent to utilize technology on a larger scale to reach the members of the Church means that President Nelson is the first senior apostle of the Church to come to that position following that announcement. Based on that fact, it would make sense that his first public address as Church president would come prior to the press conference he called, rather than waiting to address the Church for the first time during General Conference. So it makes sense on that level as well.

    3. Here I am again with yet another observation about all of this. Since President Kimball became Church president on Sunday December 30, 1973, it has been traditional that new Church presidents are ordained on a Sunday. That has been true for all Church presidents between Kimball and Monson, so I doubt Nelson will break that precedent. We will find out for sure on Tuesday, but it would appear that any changes will be made this Sunday. Thanks again for wading through these additional comments.

    4. According to an article released by the Deseret News, the reason that President Nelson is going to speak and hold the press conference on Tuesday is because Monday is Martin Luther King Day in the US, which is a day off for General Authorities as well. But the changes are likely to be made tomorrow. Thanks for reading this additional information.

In addition to my life-long love for the subjects which I cover in the posts of this blog, I have long held the belief that we can disagree without becoming disagreeable. Differences of opinion are natural, while being disagreeable in expressing those differences is not. And in that sense, I have no desire to close the door on anyone who earnestly desires to contribute to the ongoing dialogue on subjects covered in the posts on this blog.

At the same time, however, I recognize that we live in a time when incivility, discourtesy, unkindness, and even cyber-bullying has regrettably become part of online interactions. With that in mind, while anyone who wishes can comment on anything if they choose to do so, I hereby reserve the right to immediately delete any comments which are critical, unkind, lack civility, or promote prodcuts, services, and values contrary to either the Church, or to the rules of online etiquette.

I'd also like to remind all who comment here that I try to respond personally to each individual comment as I feel is appropriate. Such replies are not meant to end the conversation, but to acknowledge earnest feedback as it is submitted.

And in order to better preserve the spirit and pure intentions for which this blog was established, I also hereby request that anyone not commenting with a regular user name (particularly those whose comments appear under the "Unknown" or "Anonymous" monikers, give the rest of us a name to work with in addressing any replies. If such individuals do not wish to disclose their actual given names, a pseudonym or nickname would suffice.

Any comments made by individuals who opt to not give a name by which they can ber identified may, depending on the substance and tone of such comments, be subject to deletion as well. I would respectfully ask that all of us do all we can to keep the dialogue positive, polite, and without malice or ill-will. May the Lord bless us all in our discussion of these important matters.
