Hello again, everyone! The Church News has shared
this report on President Nelson's visit to Tonga, which highlights his visit with the King and Queen of Tonga, and the member devotional at which he spoke. Following that devotional, the Nelsons and Gongs crossed the international dateline, and are now in Papeete Tahiti. They will have around a day to rest and regroup, and will then cap their Pacific Ministry Tour by attending a cultural celebration marking the 175th anniversary since missionaries first arrived in French Polynesia, and will speak at a devotional that evening which will be broadcast to all congregations in Tahiti.
As that ministry tour winds to a close, although we did not hear anything about the Brethren looking over site locations for the Pago Pago American Samoa or Neiafu Tonga Temple, it is tremendous that the site location for the Auckland New Zealand Temple has been confirmed. And as I
mentioned yesterday, I am anticipating that at least 9 temples will have a groundbreaking within the next year or so. But I am hoping that we may hear about many more groundbreakings, especially in view of the unexpected way 8 temples will have had a groundbreaking within the first half of this year,
Having noted that, I also wanted to mote that the Copenhagen Denmark Temple is today marking the
15th anniversary of its' dedication, and that
5 new temple presidents have been called to serve, among which are the first president for the Arequipa Peru Temple, 1 former area seventy, and 1 former counselor in the presidency of the same temple for which he will assume oversight. With the announced calls of these 5 additional temple presidents, the total number of new temple presidents called is 62.
There are also 2 other temples under construction (Winnipeg Manitoban and
Abidjan Côte d'Ivoire) for which the first presidents may be called before the end of this year. And in view of the fact that only 1 of the remaining 8 temples which are on my list for this year has not been or will not be affected by a renovation, it may be anyone's guess how many other temples might have a new president announced at some point this year. An updated copy of my list of the temples which have had or may yet have a new president announced follows below.
In order to not disturb the flow of that information, I will end here and now as I always do: That does it for this post. Any and all comments are, as always, welcome and appreciated, on any post at any time, as longa as such comments are made in accordance with the stablished guidelines.Thank you for the privilege of your time. I
President Nelson is going to go on another ministry tour at the end of August and the first part of September.
ReplyDeletePlaces mentioned in the local area pages:
Bogotá CO 25 Aug 2019
Quito EC 27 Aug 2019
Sao Paulo BR 01 Sep 2019
There will more than likely be more stops on his itineary given the space-out in dates. My hypothesis is that he will visit Argentina between Quito and Sao Paulo, because there has been a report in an Argentinian daily about how the members of the Church wanted to construct a temple in Bahia Blanca, south of the capital city of Buenos Aires. In addition to that, besides the three Carribbean countries of Guayana, Suriname, and French Guiana, the only two countries that President Nelson would not have visited in South America would be, precisely, Argentina and Venezuela.
But confirmed: Bogota 25 Aug, Quito 27 Aug, Sao Paulo 01 Sep
In the Bogota and Quito events, they are only asking for those that live within three hours of the location to attend, whereas the Sao Paulo event is going to be strictly controlled as space is rather limited to squeeze 50 SP area stakes into the center where they plan to have the event.
Bryan, thank you for stopping by to share this news. I knew President Nelson would likely go on another leg of his Global Ministry Tour at some point this year, but did not anticipate he would be in South America for the second time in less than a year. It will be interesting to see what happens with this tour. It wouldn't shock me if he departs Salt Lake on August 23 and wraps up the tour on September 2 or so. I say that because the Church has already announced his 95th birthday celebration will be held on September 6, so he would want to get back to Salt Lake in enough time to rest sufficiently before that celebration is held. Given the special focus on South America, it wouldn't shock me if more temples are announced there in October, and Bahia Blanca may be one of those, especially if President Nelson is going to ascertain to build a temple there based on his visit. Where did you find the information about the Bahia Blanca Saints wanting a temple?
DeleteIn the interim, the news releases I could find on this (per your indication) were on the Colombian and Ecuadoran versions of the Newsroom website:
https://www.noticiasmormonas.co/articulo/presidente-nelson-anuncia-su-visita-a-colombia
https://www.noticiasmormonas.ec/articulo/se-anuncia-la-visita-del-presidente-nelson-a-ecuador
I could not find the article verifying the planned stop in Sao Paulo. With that said, I am sure that at some point within the next month or two, the complete itinerary will be released, along with details regarding who will be accompanying President Nelson on this next tour.
In the interim, thanks for mentioning that here, Bryan. I also wanted to note that I have published the preliminary list of locations in which a temple may be announced. The web address for those predicted locations follows below, and all are weelcome to comment from now until around a week before General Conference.

In view of what you shared here, Bryan, it looks like I may have to rethink my offered thoughts about the prospects in the South America South Area. But there is nothing so constant as change. Having said that, thanks for taking time to comment, Bryan!

ReplyDeleteApparently they were planning this from 2017 but have some issues with the tower height. The land is already bought and paid for in US dollars given the fluctuation of the Argentine peso.
Even so, until there is actually approval, I would take it with a grain of salt until they actually announce it from Salt Lake. Because when they do, at least in ARG, that is because the temple is already approved or very near approval. That was why Salta and Mendoza were able to progress rather quickly from the time the temples there were announced.
https://masfe.org/noticias/presidente-russell-m-nelson-visitara-brasil/ (Spanish) story on the Brazil Area letting the members know the Prophet will be in Sao Paulo on the first day of September.
Bryan, thank you for sharing that article. I know that at the time I posted my latest list of potential temple locations, I had three cities in Argentina which I couldn't narrow down to one, namely: Santa Fe, Rosario, and Neuquen. Given what you shared, I have replaced all three with Bahia Blanca. I likewise appreciated your disclaimer about this report, since nothing is official until the Brethren make it so by a formal announcement. Even if President Nelson were to visit Bahia Blanca during that trip, we might not know whether any potential sites were looked at unless and until a temple for that city is subsequently announced and it is confirmed that the land that was referenced will be the location thereof.
DeleteHopefully with land being confirmed for both the Salta and Mendoza Argentina Temples already, their groundbreakings could occur within the next 12-18 months, if not sooner. Again, Bryan, thank you for passing that information along. I appreciate hearing from you.
As for my home temple, Puebla, apparently the land has already been set apart for that purpose. One, or perhaps two, new stakes will be formed west of Puebla 10 days from now. An unidentified member of the 12 is said to be presiding at the stake, though I suspect it will be Elder Holland as he will have a YSA devotional with the Mexico Area immediately prior. There's also a special women's conference being held in Puebla this weekend too.
ReplyDeleteYou usually don't have an apostle come down to dedicate a stake anymore. I don't want to speculate too much, but it is possible that we could get more news concerning the Temple, groundbreaking date, or temple rendering reveal.
Thank you also for this additional commment, Bryan. Good to hear of the additional Church growth which has occurred in the Puebla area. And it is also good to hear that land has officially been procured for the temple in that city. I know you said that the Church has a great relationship with the Mexican government, so I will look forward to hearing what happens during that visit of the unnamed member of the Twelve.
DeleteAs for the Twelve visiting stake conferences, I know that when I was a young man, then-Elder Eyring was the general Church leader assigned to preside at our stake conference, at which time I believe the presidency of our stake was reorganized. So it happens. Sometimes that is rare, but if I recall correctly, each able-bodied apostle is assigned to personally preside over at least two stake conferences per year, as part of their commission to visit with ans strengthen Church members all around the world. I also know that recent reports on the ministry of our apostles have shared their experiences at stake conferences. Either way, if a member of the Twelve is coming to Mexico, and if an apostolic visit is rare for the nation, there may be something to look forward to there. Please keep us posted, and thanks again for commenting.
Perhaps one of the stops could be to preside at the groundbreaking for one of the two announced temples in Argentina or Brazil? Since he will be in Sao Paulo on Sunday the 1st, maybe a groundbreaking the day prior in Belem or Brasilia, if we follow the fairly regular pattern of temple groundbreakings being held on Saturdays.
ReplyDeleteIt will be interesting to hear more details.
Eric, thank you for taking time to comment. I suppose that it is possible that stops in Brazil or Argentina could be to preside at a temple grounbreaking. I believe the last temple to have a Church President preside at its' groundbreaking was the Rome Italy Temple, but I'd have to double-check that. In the meantime, depending on the planned itinerary in terms of both the cities visited and the dates of the visit, he may not be within an easy distance between where he is speaking and the locations of any of those temples.
DeleteOf course, I am saying that without knowing what the itinerary will look like. What I do know, however, is that it is likely that the Brasilia Brazil Temple will be one of the next temples (if not the very next) to have a groundbreaking. So there is a lot to consider there, particularly with all that is not known. But I am hoping that within the next 5-6 weeks, information on the timing for one more temple groudnbreaking will be released prior to the annual July recess for the General Authorities.
Whatever might happen with President Nelson's next Global Ministry Tour, at very least, I can promise to try my personal best to stay on top of reporting about it. And in any case, the idea that he will be heading out again for a major ministry trip in around 3 months says a lot about his desire to be out and about among the people, which is very commendable. I know of few other almost-95 year-olds who have that level of vigor and stamina. But it is wonderful to see daily evidence of that in this case. Thanks again, Eric, for taking time to comment.
Why is the Veracruz Temple on this list? I show Carlos Flores called as President in 2018.
ReplyDeleteScott, after reading your comment, I did some digging on my end, and I found verification in the Church News of the information you provided. I think what happened was that one or two of the sources I use for such lists did not have that information updated, which is why I put it on my list. But if the new president has only been serving a year, I can take him off of this year's list. Also, it's my understanding that when an existing temple is clsoed for renovation, the presidency thereof is released for the duration of that renovation process, and. in most cases, is called to serve again as the renovation wraps up. Since Veracruz was the only temple on my list which was not affected by a renovation process that has occurred, is occurring, or will yet occur, the only other temples for which a new president may be called are the Winnipeg Manitoba and Abidjan Côte d'Ivoire Temples. I suppose that could change, depending on anything unexpected occurring in relation to current temple presidents, but we will have to see what happens there. In the meantime, Scott, thanks for pointing out this error. I appreciate hearing from you.
