Tribute to Elder Gary E. Stevenson, Who is Marking His 66th Birthday Today

Hello again, everyone! With today being August 6, Elder Gary E. Stevenson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles is celebrating his 66th birthday. Gary Evan Stevenson was born to Evan and Jean Stevenson on this day in 1955 in Ogden, Utah. He grew up in the Cache Valley. He served full-time in the Japan Fukuoka Mission, after which he continued his secondary education at Utah State University's Jon M. Huntsman School of Business. During the course of his studies there, he met Lesa Jean Higley, whom he later married in the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple, and with whom he would raise four sons. He spent his professional career working as the COO of ICON Health and Fitness, and served on both the Marriott School of Management Advisory Council and also the USU Foundation Board.

In the Church, he has served as a bishop and a stake president's counselor. From 2004-2007, he and his wife presided over the Japan Nagoya Mission. Less than a year after his return, he was among the first general authority seventies called during President Thomas S. Monson's prophetic administration in April 2008. In August of that same year, he was called to serve as First Counselor in the Asia North Area Presidency, marking his third return to Japan as a representative of the Church. The following year, he became the president of that same area, and he served in that assignment until April 2012, at which point, he was released as a General Authority Seventy and sustained as the Church's 14th Presiding Bishop.

In October 2015, with three vacancies in the apostleship due to the deaths of President Boyd K. Packer and Elders L. Tom Perry and Richard G. Scott, Elder Stevenson was unexpectedly summoned to meet with the First Presidency. He related that he felt sure that he was being notified that one of his counselors (Bishops Gerald Causse or Dean M. Davies) were being called to the apostleship. He was stunned when the apostolic call was instead extended to him personally.

He was sustained as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles on October 3, 2015, and was ordained an apostle on October 8, then released as Presiding Bishop one day later. His call to the apostleship marked the second time a current General Authority Seventy who had subsequently been called as Presiding Bishop was also eventually called to the apostleship. Previously, that had been the case with Elder Robert D. Hales, who was called as a General Authority in 1975, and as Presiding Bishop of the Church in 1985 before being called to the apostleship in 1994. Those two former Presiding Bishops of the Church would serve together in the apostleship for approximately two years before Elder Hales' passing on October 1, 2017.

2015 marked the first time since 1906 that the Church needed to fill more than two apostolic vacancies. 1906 that the Church had more than two apostolic vacancies to fill at the same time.

In 1906, following the resignations of Matthias F. Cowley and John W. Taylor over the Church's repeal of the doctrine of plural marriage, and the death of another apostle, Marriner W. Merrill, the Church called George F. Richards, Orson F. Whitney, and David O. McKay, Of the three, Then-Elder McKay was the youngest, with Elder Whitney being the oldest, and Elder Richards fell in age between the two. This was an exception to the gneral rule that when more than one apostle was called on the same day, they are typically ordained in order from oldest to youngest. The three apostolic calls in 2015 saw a similar anomaly in that respect. Although Elders Ronald A. Rasband, Gary E. Stevenson, and Dale G. Renlund were all called to the apostleship on the same day of the week in the week prior to General Conference, Elder Rasband is the oldest, Elder Stevenson is the youngest, and Elder Renlund is in the middle of those three.

At the age of 60, Elder Stevenson was the youngest man called to the apostleship since Elder David A. Bednar (who was 52 at the time of his October 2004 apostolic call). He would retain his status as the youngest currently-serving apostle until the April 2018 call of Elder Ulisses Soares, who was 59 at the time of his call. With the apostolic calls of Elders Gerrit W. Gong (another apostle with strong connections to Asia) and Ulisses Soares in April 2018, Elder Stevenson is now the 9th in seniority in the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and the 12th in seniority among all current apostles. In terms of his age, he is the second-youngest among both the Quorum of the Twelve and the apostles overall. In his 11 years of service as a general authority, he has given ">15 addresses in General Conference (1 as a General Authority Seventy, 2 as Presiding Bishop, and the remaining 12 since his call to the apostleship). All of these addresses, covering a wide variety of topics, are well worthy of your time, attention and review.

I gratefully sustain Elder Stevenson as a prophet, seer, and revelator, and appreciate this opportunity to post this tribute to him for his birthday. I similarly greatly admire and sustain each and every one of the other apostles in their God-given roles and responsibilities, and I am grateful to them for giving their time and talents to build up the kingdom of God, and to go wherever they are sent, bearing witness of the Savior at all times and in all circumstances. I share my witness that these men are called of God, and that we will be blessed as we give heed to their words. That does it for now. BREAKING TEMPLE NEWS: Latest Phased Temple Reopenings Announced for July and August

Hello again, everyone! Following a one-week hiatus necessitated by my aforementioned medical emergency, I am back to share the latest temple reopening updates, which were released by the Church this morning. This post will highlight those updates, as they in are found in the updated official release from the Newsroom, with coverage also provided through the Church News update and the updated temple reopening status tracker

Without further interruption, let's dive right in to what these changes are, when they will go into effect, and the updated data about how many temples will be open in each operational phase as of next Monday (August 9). According to today's report, the Paris France and Stockholm Sweden Temples have now offficially entered phase 3, allowing all living ordinances in priority order, in addition to limited proxy work by appointment.

Meawhile, 5 temples in Brazil are anticipated to move to phase 2-B later this month, alowing all living ordinances in priority order, in addition to limited prxy baptism as scheduled. The 5 in question are Campinas, Curitiba, and Recife (each of which may enter phase 2-B as early as next Tuesday (August 10), with the Porto Alegre and Sao Paulo Brazil Temples anticipated to enter phase 2-B as early as the following Tuesday (August 17).

Today's coverage also reiterated that the Spokane Washington Temple was still anticipated to transition to phase 3 as early as Monday August 16, with the Medford Oregon Temple anticipated to do the same at some point between now and the end of August (an exact date on that has not yet been mentioned on that). Additionally, the two temples in the Philippines (Cebu City and Manila) will pause operations for the time being, out of an abundance of caution and in compliance with restrictions in that island nation.

As I have previously done with recent temple reopening reports, I wanted to again share the demographic breakdown of the different temple statuses. It remains a given that 8 temples continue to be closed for renovation. Of those 8, 6 have been granted phase 3 status so that those in the relevant temple districts can schedule living ordinances in priority order, in addition to limited proxy work, at the temple nearest to the Church members in the districts of those 6 temples.

Meanwhile,` 9 temples are "paused" in their reopenings. Of those 9, 6 had been in phase 3 when they were paused, with 2 in phase 2-B and 1 in phase 1. Of the remaining temples in various phases of reopening, there are 2 in phase 1, 9 in phase 2, 16 in phase 2-B, and the reamining 124 in phase 3. I am grateful for the measured approach and week-to-week adaptability the First Presidency has shown in their efforts towards reopening temples as quickly and as safely as possible. I remain committed to bringing you all the latest in Church news and temple developments (relative to temple reopenings, temple construction, and temple milestones.

That does it for now. Any and all comments are, as always, welcome and appreciated, on any post at any time, as long as such omments are made in accordance with the established guidelines. Thank you for the privilege of your time.If you enjoyed what you read here and would like to stay informed of newly added content, please feel free to subscribe. Personal Circumstance Delay Blog Updates

Hello again, everyone! I know that the weekly temple updates, along with additional changes to General Conference and additional temple groundbreakings have been announced. But early Tuesday  morning, I had a medical emergency that resulted in surgery yesterday. I am at home and in the mend, but until further notice, previously-prepared content will serve as the bulk of updates here. I do have several additional developments I'm awaiting word on, but I wanted to give you that update. If any of you are aware of anything any of us need to know, please share that in  the comments of the newest post. My thanks once again to you all.

BREAKING TEMPLE NEWS: Latest Phased Reopening Updates Released

Note: This post was originally published on this blog at 10:20 AM. Subsequent content was added between 12:30 and 1:00 PM.

Hello again, everyone! Although I had published an initial version of this post here at 10:20 AM,  some of the Church News articles covering that development were not yet available at that time, and I had another commitment to tend to this morning, so, on the heels of this morning's announcement of the revised reopening dates for the Washington D.C. Temple, temple reopening update were first provided in this official release from the Newsroom. Those updates were subsequently also shared in the latest update from the Church News, and were further reflected in the weekly reopening status tracker. Let's get right into those details.

First, the temples in Caracas Venezuela, Manaus Brazil, Tijuana Mexico, and Vancouver British Columbia have reopened or will soon reoepen in phase 3, which allows for the performance of all living ordiances in priority order, and the scheduling of limited proxy work. Meanwhile, the Church has announced that the Fortaleza Brazil Temple could transition to phase 2-B, allowing ordinances for the living in priority order, and proxy baptisms by appointment, as early as August 2. And the Sydney Australia Temple, which had reached phase 3 in its reopening, has had to puuse operations due to COVID-19 conditions and restrictions.

And three more temples in North America could reopen in phase 3 anytime between now and the ned of next month. Those three are the Toronto Ontario Temple in the North America Northeast Area, and the Medford Oregon and Spokane Washington Temples  in the North America West Area. As of next Monday (July 26), these adjustments will result in the following breakdown of temples reoepning in each phase:

8 are closed for major renovations (6 of which have been granted phase 3 designation, allowing ordinances for the living in priority order and limited proxy ordinances as scheduled); 10 temples are currently "paused" in their reopenings (6 of those had reached phase 3, with 1 in phase 2-B and the remaining 3 in phase 2); 3 are operating in phase 1; with 10 in phase 2; 17 others are in phase 2-B; and the remaining 120 are now operating in phase 3.

As always, I remain continuously grateful for the measured approaach the Brethren have taken to carefully transition temples to the next phases of operation, while allowing COVID-19 conditions to inform their choices about pausing or stepping back any of the temples in their reopening. Each week, the Church is getting all the more close to a return to normal temple operations, and that is very much a reason to rejoice.

For my part, I continue to monitor all Church news updates and temple developments, and will be sure to pass word of those along to you all as I become aware thereof. That does it for now. Any and all comments are, as always, welcome and appreciated, on any post at any time, as long as such comments are made in accordance with the established guidelines. BREAKING TEMPLE NEWS: Reopening Dates Set for the Washington D.C. Temple

Hello again, everyone! Although I anticipate the weekly announcement of temple reopenings any time now, other breaking temple news has been announced by the Church. Following a nearly 2-year delay due to COVID-19 conditions, revised reopening dates have been reset for the Washington D.C. Temple Let's break down the particulars. The Church has announced that a media day will occur on April 18, 2022, with VIP/private tours from April 19-April 27.

Following those tours, the temple will reopen to the public for a rough 6-week period (from April 28-June 4, excluding the relevant Sundays).  There will be a youth devotional held on June 18, followed by the rededication of the temple the next day in 3 sessions (at 9:00 AM, 12:00 PM, and 3:00 PM), The youth devotional and rededication will be broadcast to all meetinghouses in the the Wasshington D.C. Temple district.

Interestingly enough, the news release does not mention who will preside at the youth devetional and templei rededication. I was a little surprised that the rededication of this temple will only occur in mid-June of next year, but ive view of the extended open house, it does make sense. As I mentioned at the beginning of this post, the Church will likely make its' temple reopeneing announcements for the week in the next little while, which I will pass along to you all as I receive that information.

That does it for now. Any and all comments are, as always, welcome and appreciated, on any post at any time, as long as such comments are made in accordance with the established guidelines. Thank you for the privilege of your time. If you enjoyed what you read here and would like to stay informed of newly added content, please feel free to subscribe. BREAKING TEMPLE NEWS: Church Confirms the Preliminary Details for the Yorba Linda California Temple

Hello again, everyone! This morning the Church has confirmed the location and preliminary plans for the Yorba Linda California Temple. Let's break down the details. The single-story temple (anticipated to be roughly 30,000 square feet) will rise on a 5.4 acre site on the corners of Osmond Street and Bastanchuury Road. Representatives from the Church will work on the approvals process for that temple alongside government leaders, but this very well could mean another temple that is likely to have a groundbreaking later this year.

With today's announcement, the only US temples announced earlier this year which have not had preliminary information confirmed are the Eugene Oregon and Ephraim Utah Temples, but I imagine word on the locations and preliminary details for thoesse temples will come down the pike at some point between now and the end of this month. In any case, I'd anticipate that the Church will have a very busy second half of 2021.

By way of review, the Church now has 14 temples in the queue which could conceivably have their groundbreakings during the second half of this month. With the information for most US temples being announced in stages, as has been the case lately, that does make it difficult to figure out what the timing of the next announcements (exterior renderings and groundbreaking arrangements) might turn out to be for each of these temples. which in turn will impact the construction time-frames.

Having said that, Iam grateful for the Church's approach here, which has been very measured for the time being, and I look forward to passing something more official on any of those temples along to you all once that is announced.  In the meantine I continue to monitor all Church news updates and temple developments and will be sure to bring word of those to you all here as well.

BREAKING TEMPLE NEWS: Groundbreakings Announced for Pittsburgh Pennsylvania and Nairobi Kenya Temples

Hello again, everyone! This morning, the First Presidency announced the groundbreaking arrangements for the temples in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania and Nairobi Kenya. First, it's worth noting that the Newsroom article on this development incorrectly states that both temples were announced in April 2020 by President Nelson. That's not quite correct. As we know, the Nairobi Kenya Temple was actually the last temple in the queue that had been originally announced by President Monson (in April 2017).

That inaccuracy aside, the first of the two to have a groundbreaking will be the Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Temple. That's set to occur on Saturday August 21, 2021, and is the second groundbreaking held during COVID-19 to have an exact date announced for the ceremony instead of a general window. Elder Randall K. Bennett, president of the Church's North America Northeast Area, will preside over that ceremony. The location and rendering of that temple was released in mid-January.

As for the Nairobi Kenya Temple, its' groundbreaking is set to occur on Saturday September 11. Elder Joseph W. Sitati, a native of Kenya currently serving as the president of the Africa Central Area of the Church, will preside at that event. In a somewhat odd development, the news release notes that the temple's official location and exterior rendering will be released at a later time. I imagine that's because the final approvals for the location and design are pending, but they are far enough along that a groundbreaking can be safely set.

It would appear that, except for areas where COVID-19 still makes things unpredictable, the Church is able to again set exact dates for temple groundbreakings. I would anticipate that both temples will be completed sometime in 2023 (with Nairobi possibly completed in 2024), but we'll have to see. Although I was anticipating groundbreaking announcements for more temples would be coming down the pike, the announcement specifically relating to Kenya's first temple surprised me in terms of its' timing.

I take today's announcement as a positive sign that the Church will be able to schedule other groundbreakings for specific dates in the future. On my personal watchlist for such an announcement are the temples in Lindon Utah (though the Church temples site indicates that the groundbreaking for that temple is anticiapted in 2022), and any of the Pacific Area Temples for which official details have been confirmed.

I particularly anticipate something official might come down the pike for the Neiafu TongaPago Pago American Samoa, and Port Moresby Papua New Guinea Temples, but we'll see what happens for each of those temples. It's also worth noting that, while I was composing the content of this post, the Church News shared their own coverage on today's announcement, though again, the Church News article also mistakenly asserts that the Nairobi Kenya Temple was announced in April 2020.

Today's announcement brings the number of temples for which a groundbreaking has been scheduled this year thus far ro 6, but I anticipate a sharp increase in that number for the second half of this year. For my part, I continue to monitor all Church news and temple updates, and will be sure to pass word of those along to you all here as I become aware thereof.

That does it for now. Any and all comments are, as always, welcome and appreciated, on any post at any time, as long as such comments are made in accordance with the established guidelines. BREAKING TEMPLE NEWS: Additional Temple Reopenings Announced for July and August

Hello again, everyone! This morning, the latest temple reopening updates were released through the Newsroom, with those same updates noted in the Church News and reflected as well in the temple reopening status tracker, with each of those showing the changes that will go into effect throughout the rest of this month and into August.

18 more temples have moved or will move into phase 3 as early as this week. Those temples break down by area as follows:

Caribbean: Port-au-Prince Haiti

Europe: Frankfurt and Freiberg Germany, Bern Switzerland, Copenhagen Denmark, Lisbon Portugal, Madrid Spain, and Rome Italy.

Philippines: Cebu City Philippines

North America Central: Calgary and Edmonton Alberta

North America Southeast: Fort Lauderdale and Orlando Florida; Columbia South Carolina; Louisville Kentucky; Memphis Tennessee; Raleigh North Carolina

South America Northwest: Guayaquil Ecuador

The Anchorage Alaska Temple (which falls under the North America West Area) has also reopened, but patrons in those districts have been able to schedule limited phase 3 proxy ordinances for the last several weeks. The Church also announced other temples projected to move to phase 3 in July and August, which are likewise listed by Church area:

Brazil: Manaus Brazil

Mexico: Tijuana Mexico

North America Northeast: Toronto Ontario

North America West: Vancouver British Columbia; Medford Oregon and Spokane Washington (The Church had originally planned to reopen the latter two temples later this month, but that's been pushed back to August, likely due to COVID-19 conditions).

South America Northwest: Caracas Venezuela

As of next Monday (July 19), the status of the Church's 168 temples will break down as follows: 8 closed for major renovations (6 of which have been given phase 3 designations); 9 paused (5 in phase 3, 1 in phase 2-B, and the remaining 3 in phase 2); 3 in phase 1; 10 in phase 2; 21 in phase 2-B; and the remaining 117 in phase 3.

I am grateful for the Church's continued measured and cautious approach to reopening temples. I continue to monitor all Church news updates and temple developments and will bring word of those to you all as I receive it. That does it for now. Any and all comments are, as always, welcome and appreciated, on any post at any time, as long as such comments are made in accordance with the established guidelines. BREAKING NEWS: Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra At Temple Square Plan a Phased Return to Normal Operations

Hello again, everyone! This morning, there was an unexpected update from the Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra, and Bells at Temple Square. Although the development in question was reported earlier this morning, I'm still classifying it as breaking news. So let's look at the relevant details here. First, the daily organ recitals, which have been offered virtually for the last several months, will reopen to the public beginning Monday July 19. On Monday-Saturday, those daily recitals are scheduled for noon MDT, while they are scheduled to occur at 2:00 PM MDT on Sundays.

But with the return to daily organ recitals that are again open to the public, the Church will continue to provide a virtual edition of those recitals in the ongoing Piping Up! series will continue to be live-streamed through the Choir's Youtube channel every Wednesday at noon. Meanwhile, a phased reopening plan has been announced for the Choir, Orchestra, and Bells. The Choir will resume in-person rehearsals on Thursday August 26, which will be open to the public starting on Thursday October 7.  The Bells at Temple Square resume regular rehearsals onWednesday September 1, which will again open to the public beginning Wednesday October 6.

The Choir has also announced that the completely-live Music & the Spoken Word broadcasts will replace the hybrid version of the broadcast (prerecorded performances with a new Spoken Work message) beginning Sunday September 19, and that beginning Sunday October 10, the live broadcasts of "Music and the Spoken Word" will again be open to the public. The Choir further announced that, for the October 2021 General Conference, rather than using prerecorded music, the Choir will provide music for three of the four General Conference Sessions.

Although the particulars of that are not spelled out specifically, I'm reasonably certain that the three sessions in question will be the Saturday Morning and Sunday Morning and Afternoon Sessions. As far as how that will work, I imagine that the Choir will be in either the otherwise-empty Conference Center or possibly the Tabernacle at Temple Square, with the feed of their performances piped in to the Conference Center Auditorium, from which the rest of the sessions will originate.

Today's announcement also noted that the Choir hopes to be able to present a live Christmas Concert this year, but official confirmation on the details will be deferred until they are more firmly set and able to move forward. I am grateful to see that the Choir, Orchestra, and Bells at Temple Square have announced a phased plan to move towards normal practices and performances, and will be be interesting to see how all of that turns out.

On an unrelated note, Iu had recently mentioned that I anticipated at least a few major temple-related announcements in the near term, but when I made those statements, I had somehow spaced the fact that July has been the typical recess month for the General Authorities and General Officers of the Church. As a result, although we could see a few other breaking news updates this month, I imagine that July could potentially be a much quieter month than we have most recently seen in terms of major general developments or specific temple announcements.

I will keep my eyes open for word on all such developments and will do my level best to pass word of those along to you all as I become aware thereof. BREAKING TEMPLE NEWS: First Presidency Announces Additional Temple Reopenings Which Will Occur Throughout July

Hello again, everyone! As many of you are no doubt aware, in recent weeks, every Tuesday, that the Church has released the latest updates on the ongoing process of reopening temples. Since the Church switched the weekly announcements from Monday to Tuesday, those announcements have traditionally been made around or within the 10:00 AM hour.

I don't know if there was a lag today due to the recent federal holiday in the United States, but the announcement was made today just a short while ago. At the time this post was published, the updats from this week were only available through the Newsroom. Whenever coverage of these updates is available in the Church News, I will be sure to pass that along.

Update (added at noon): Apparently, while I was composing this post, the corresponding updates have been shared by the Church News, including coverage of the latest reopening announcements and the updated status tracker. The latter two updates additionally mentioned that 19 more temples had opened in phase 3 this week.

They include the following, broken down first by area, then listed in alphabetical order within those areas (except in cases where two or more temples in any states are announced, in which case those in the same state are listed together, followed then by temples in other states in each area)::

North America Central: Denver and Fort Collins Colorado; Bismarck North Dakota; Chicago Illinois; Regina Saskatchewan; St. Paul Minnesota

North America Northeast: Manhattan and Palmyra New York; Boston Massachusetts; Columbus Ohio; Detroit Michigan; Hartford Connecticut;  Indianapolis Indiana; Philadelphia Pennsylvania; Washington D.C.

North America West: Columbia River and Seattle 'Washington; Los Angeles California; Portland Oregon

The information from the Church News also specified that the Medford Oregon and Spokane Washington Temples, which had previously been announced for phase 3 reopenings before the end of July, have had that channge pushed back into August out of concern about COVID-19 conditions and restrictions.

The Anchorage Alaska Temple will begin phase 3 operations next Monday (July 12, after having been in phase 2-B since May 24). On that same date, the Calgary Alberta Temple will transition to phase 2-B, which will allow all living ordinances and limited proxy baptisms by appointment. Additonal note (also added during the noon hour): The Church News coverage also reiterated that, as previously announced, the Manila Philippines and Stockholm Sweden Temples will transition to phase 2-B next Monday (July 12), assuming COVID-19 assessments allow that to occur on scheduled. The Church News also provided an updated list of 21 temples for which phase 3 openings have been set for later this month or sometime next month. Having added that, let's return to the previously-published content.

Meanwhile, plans have also been announced for 3 temples in Canada (Calgary and Edmonton Alberta and Halifax Nova Scotia) 2 in the North America West Area (Medford Oregon and Spokane Washington) and one in Asia (Sapporo Japan) to transition to phase 3 on yet-unspecified dates in July or August, depending on COVID-19 conditions in each location..As of next Monday (July 12), the Church's temple reopenings will break down as follows (Please note: In the initially-published version of this post, I used the breakdown of numbers provided by the Newsroom, which mistakenly listed the data as if all the announced phase changes has already occurred. The corrected numbers below are featured courtesy of the Church News)::

8 temples closed for renovation (6 of which have been granted phase 3 designation, which allows those residing in those districts to schedule proxy work at whichever temple closest to them is in phase 3); 9 temples remain "paused" in their reopenings (of which 4 had reached phase 3, with 2 more in phase 2-B and 3 others in phase 2); 3 others in phase 1; 10 in phase 2; 38 in phase 2-B; and the remaining 100 in phase 3.

I am grateful for these latest updates, and for the Church's measured methods of reopening temples through using a week-by-week, temple-by-temple consideration of relevant factors. I am also likewise grateful for all other Church news updates and temple developments, and will be sure to bring you all word of those as I become aware thereof.
