BREAKING TEMPLE NEWS: Site Location and Preliminary Information Released for the Grand Rapids Michigan Temple

Hello again, everyone! As I've mentioned in the recent past, on Monday, between 1-3 PM here in Utah, the Church has been announcing major temple updates. Today is no exception, as the site location and preliminary information have been confirmed for the Grand Rapids Michigan Temple, yet another US temple announced last month by President Nelson. Let's break down the details:

The Grand Rapids Michigan Temple will be a single-story edifice of approximately 20,000 square feet that will be built at 2400 Forest Hill Avenue in Grand Rapids on a 10.5-acre site. Detailed plans are still being developed, and the rendering will be released and a groundbreaking scheduled (either separately or at the same time) at a later date.

Given the fact that the square footage of this temple is exactly twice the size of the modular temples in Helena Montana, Casper Wyoming, and Elko Nevada, it occurred to me to wonder if the Church might expand that modular design to this temple. If that turns out to be the plan, it will be interesting to see how the larger modular components might work. And in that case, that temple could be built in 2.75-3.25 years at the most.

It will be interesting to see what happens there. In the meantime, I have updated my document showing the status of announced temples which have not yet had any information officially confirmed. In summary of that document, of the 72 currently-announced temples, there are 50 remaining for which we do not have official information. If any of you have any questions about that document, feel free to ask them here.

While I was preparing this update, the Newsroom provided a new home page for the latest temple updates, so that will be an important resource for all of us going forward. I was grateful for this update, despite the fact that it only pertained to a single temple. I continue to monitor all other temple updates and Church news developments and will bring word of those to you all here as I receive it. In the meantime, that does it for now. Thank you for the privilege of your time.

BREAKING TEMPLE NEWS: Groundbreaking Dates Announced for Four Latin American Temples; Official Details Released for the Managua Nicaragua Temple

Hello again, everyone! Breaking temple news has once again been announced by the Church. And this announcement is a huge one. The announcement includes a site confirmation, the release of an exterior rendering, and the groundbreaking announcement for the Managua Nicaragua Temple, which was announced by President Nelson in April 2018.  Let's break down the details:

The single-story 25,000 square foot Managua Nicaragua Temple will be built in the area of Departamento de Managua, Nicaragua, at km 9.3 Carretera Masaya, between 2nd and 3rd entrance streets to Residencial Las Colinas, Distrito V – (5).  Elder Taylor G. Godoy, First Counselor in the Central America Area Presidency, will preside at the temple groundbreaking on Saturday, November 20, 2022. I don't know at this point if the site location in question is in fact the one the Church has been holding in reserve for years, but we may find that out later.

If that was the only temple update today, it would be wonderful enough. But groundbreakings have also been confirmed for the Miraflores Guatemala City Guatemala Temple (first announced in October 2020) and the Torreon and Queretaro Mexico Temples (which were both announced in April 2021). The site locations and exterior renderings were revealed for the Torreon Mexico and Miraflores Guatemala City Guatemala Temples on September 23 of last year, with the official name for Guatemala City's second temple being confirmed on July 1 of this year.

As you might recall my mentioning, the Torreon Mexico Temple will be the first built outside the United States to use the 10,000 square-foot modular components. Oficial information was released for the Queretaro Mexico Temple on December 7, 2021. So, having reviewed the history of the stage-by-stage announcements for the Miraflores Guatemala City Guatemala, Torreon Mexico, and Queretaro Mexico Temples, when will those groundbreakings take place? And who will oversee them?

The groundbreaking for the Miraflores Guatemala City Guatemala Temple will take place on Saturday, December 3, 2022, under the direction of Elder Patricio M. Giuffra, Second Counselor in the Central America Area Presidency. One week later, the groundbreaking for the Torreon Mexico Temple will take place under the direction of Mexico Area President Elder Hugo Montoya (his biography mistakenly notes him as serving in the South America Northwest Area Presidency, which has not been true for several years).

And the groundbreaking services for the Queretaro Mexico Temple are set to take place on Saturday, January 7 of next year, with Elder Adrian Ochoa, First Counselor in the Mexico Area Presidency, set to preside thereat.

Having shared this information, if I might do so, I'd like to interject a few other general comments: While I've been hoping for 3 of these temples to have groundbreakings in the near term,  Managua Nicaragua was not on my radar as a temple that could have a site location confirmed, a rendering released, and a groundbreaking set in one fell swoop.

Above and beyond that, however, I do not necessarily believe that the Torreon Mexico Temple will be the last one to have a groundbreaking announced and set to occur by the end of this year. I fully anticipate that more official information (particularly exterior renderings and groundbreaking arrangements) could be set for both the Teton River Idaho and Montpelier Idaho Temples in the coming weeks and that either or both could still potentially occur this year. Other temple groundbreakings could also be set to occur before the end of this year as well.

A few prospects there: we know that the Port Moresby Papua New Guinea Temple site is being cleared and that the Tarawa Kiribati and Port Vila Vanuatu could also see groundbreakings in the near term. And it's still possible that the Belo Horizonte Brazil and Cali Colombia Temples, which had their sites confirmed and exterior renderings released at the same time that both the Torreon Mexico and Miraflores Guatemala City Guatemala Temples had their official information announced, could see groundbreakings set soon as well.

If I had to venture a guess as to the most likely other temples that might have a groundbreaking before the end of this year, I think that the Teton River and Montpelier Idaho Temples, and the Port Moresby Papua. New Guinea Temple top that list. Whether or not any or all of them might actually see that occur remains to be seen. But in any case, I continue to monitor all such updates, in addition to anything else relating to temple construction or general Church news, and will be sure to pass those updates along as they cross my radar. I am grateful to have been able to find out about this announcement and to share the analysis thereof here with you all.

In the meantime, that does it for now. Thank you for the privilege of your time. UPDATE: Third Quarter Temple Construction Progress

Hello again, everyone! With General Conference now less than 12 hours away, the third quarter of 2022 is almost in the history books. But before it completely passes away, I couldn't let it go without reporting on the latest temple construction updates. As has been customary for all such reports in the past, we will look back on that progress from the beginning of the year until now.

So as a refresher, you can look back at where things stood as this year beganone day before the April General Conference, and at the rough mid-point of 2022. And as we conclude the third quarter of 2022, one last report shows where things stand now. So much has happened with temple construction thus far this year, and with General Conference weekend upon us, even more milestones are anticipated throughout the end of this year.

That includes the likely announcement of new temples this weekend. So, concerning temple construction developments, buckle up! It's going to be a wild ride. For my part, I continue to monitor all such updates and will bring the highlights to you all here through breaking news updates in new posts or progress updates on the comment threads of existing posts.

In the meantime, that does it for now. Thank you for the privilege of your time. All comments are, as always, welcome and appreciated, on any post at any time, as long as the offered feedback is made per the established guidelines. BREAKING TEMPLE NEWS: Site Location, Rendering, and Groundbreaking Arrangements Released for Heber Valley Utah Temple; Site Location Confirmed for the Teton River Idaho Temple

Hello again, everyone! A short time ago, the First Presidency provided updates on two temples in the United States. In a single announcement, the location, exterior rendering, and groundbreaking arrangements were confirmed for the Heber Valley Utah Temple and the site location has been confirmed for the Teton River Idaho Temple. There's a lot to get into, so let's jump right in.

The three-story 88,000-square-foot Heber Valley Utah Temple will be built southeast of 1400 East Center Street in Heber City on a 17.9-acre site. The groundbreaking for that temple has been set to occur on October 8, 3 weeks before the previously-announced groundbreaking for the Willamette Valley Oregon Temple, and Elder Kevin R. Duncan, the executive director of the Church's Temple Department, will preside at that event.

Turning now to the Teton River Idaho Temple, the three-story130,000 square-foot temple will be built northwest of Second East 2000 North in Rexburg Idaho on a 16.6-acre site. Although no exterior rendering has been released for that temple yet, since the Church has already cleared the site, hopefully, confirmation of that rendering and the groundbreaking arrangements will be announced in the coming weeks.

The Heber Valley Utah and Teton River Idaho Temples were 2 of the 4 US temples announced last October, so it's nice to see these official announcements. And it gives me hope that additional announcements about US temples may also come soon. Likewise, I hope for other official announcements about temples outside the United States. And this is the second Monday in a row in which major temple announcements have been made in the afternoon, so it could be the start of a new trend.

I continue to monitor all such updates and will be sure to pass those along as they cross my radar. In the meantime, that does it for now. Thank you for the privilege of your time. All comments are, as always, welcome and appreciated, on any post at any time, as long as the offered feedback is made per the established guidelines.

BREAKING TEMPLE NEWS: Opening Arrangements Announced for San Juan Puerto Rico Temple; Renovation Plans Announced for Stockholm Sweden Temple

Hello again, everyone! This afternoon, the First Presidency made a major announcement regarding two temples of the Church: opening arrangements for the San Juan Puerto Rico Temple, and a planned renovation for the Stockholm Sweden Temple. Let's break down the details: A media day on Monday, November 28 will be followed by invited guest tours on Tuesday and Wednesday, November 29 and 30.

The public open house for the San Juan Puerto Rico Temple will be held from Thursday, December 1-Saturday, December 17, 2022. Although a youth devotional is not mentioned, I assume that will occur on Saturday, January 14, followed the next day by the dedication of that temple in three sessions at 9:00 AM, 12:00 PM, and 3:00 PM Puerto Rican time, which is 7:00 AM, 10:00 AM, and 1:00 PM the same day here in Utah.

Elder D. Todd Christofferson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles will preside at the dedication. I had recently shared my theory that since August has come and gone without the announcement of temple dedications or rededications, any that were set would occur next year, and that appears to be the case. The one exception might be the Columbus Ohio Temple, which is nearing completion and could probably have an open house and rededication prior to the end of this year.

That being said, let's move on to the Stockholm Sweden Temple. That temple will close sometime next year for an extensive renovation that will nearly double the size of that temple from 16,366 square feet to approximately 31,000 square feet. That will increase the capacity of the temple, which will now have two rooms for the endowment that will include 40 seats apiece.

A rendering of the redesign was also released in conjunction with this announcement. Due to the extensive work planned, the temple will remain closed for approximately three years, reopening sometime in 2026 or 2027. So we now have three temples that are set to close for extensive renovations next year: Kona Hawaii, Provo Utah, and Stockholm Sweden. Each of those renovations involves an overhauled exterior look and expansions.

I am grateful to have learned about this and to have passed it along to you all. I continue to monitor all such updates and will be sure to pass them along here as I become aware thereof. In the meantime, that does it for now. Thank you for the privilege of your time. BREAKING TEMPLE NEWS: Renovations, Expansions, and a Redesign Scheduled for Kona Hawaii Temple

Hello again, everyone! The First Presidency announced this afternoon that renovations, expansions, and a redesign are planned beginning around October 2023 for the Kona Hawaii Temple. The updates are anticipated to be completed sometime in late 2025. Plans call for an increase in the square footage of that temple from 9,500 square feet to 12,000 square feet. The rendering for the temple after the change reflects a slightly different look.

The temple is the 70th in operation, originally dedicated by President Hinckley on January 23 and 24, 2000. This continues the Church's efforts to expand the floor plan of Hinckley-era temples to accommodate an increased need. During the renovation process, the Church encourages patrons in the Kona temple district to participate in ordinance work at the Laie Hawaii Temple. I am grateful to have heard about this news and for the opportunity to share it with you all here.

I continue to monitor all such updates and will bring you word of those here as I become aware of them. In the meantime, that does it for now. All comments are, as always, welcome and appreciated, on any post at any time, as long as the offered feedback is made per the established guidelines. BREAKING TEMPLE NEWS: Church President Russell M. Nelson Will Rededicate the Washington D.C. Temple on August 14; Other Participating General Leaders Identified

Hello again, everyone! Within the last 20 minutes, the Church News has shared a breaking update on the rededication plans cfor the Washington D.C. Temple. According to the news article, Church President Russell M. Nelson will preside at the 3 sessions, set to be held at 9:00 AM, 1:30 PM, and 5:00 PM on Sunday August 14. He will be accompanied by both of his counselors, Presidents Dallin H. Oaks and Henry B. Eyring.

Other general Church leaders participating to varying degrees in the 3 sessions are Elders Quentin L. Cook and Gerrit W. Gong of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles; Elder Paul V. Johnson (who may have supervisory oversight for the North America Southeast Area as a member of the Presidency of the Seventy); Sister Amy A. Wright, the new First Counselor in the Primary General Presidency, who, while serving as Second Counselor in that presidency for the last year, was a member of the Temple and Family History Executive Council (as Elder Gong is currently);

Elder Kevin R. Duncan, Executive Director of the Temple Department; and the presidency of the Church's North America Northeast Area (Elders Allen D. Haynie, W. Mark Bassett, and Vaiangina Sikahema). I am grateful the Church News has confirmed these details, including verifying my theory that President Nelson will personally preside at this temple's rededication.

I continue to monitor all other updates from the Church News, Newsroom, and Church of Jesus Christ Temples site and will be sure to pass those along to you all as I become aware thereof. In the meantime, that does it for now. All comments are, as always, welcome and appreciated, on any post at any time, as long as the offered feedback is made per the established guidelines.

Review of Temple Construction Progress During the First Half of 2022

Hello again, everyone! With just 10 minutes left in the first half of 2022, I wanted to provide a look back at temple construction progress during these first 6 months of 2022. To contextualize that, I have three reports: what temple construction looked like as 2022 began, a look at the progress made on that front when the April 2022 General Conference was a few days away, and how things look as we head into the month marking the General Authorities' annual recess.

As we know at this point, the Church has dedicated 3 new temples and has rededicated 1 (with the rededication of another occurring this weekend). So far, the Church has broken ground for 9 temples, and 2 others are scheduled to occur in mid-to-late August. And the site location and preliminary information have been announced for 1 temple thus far. In view of the recess month into which we're entering, I don't anticipate any major announcements relating to temples until August, but I would love to be wrong about that.

I am cautiously optimistic that the second half of this year will bring with it major updates on a variety of fronts. I continue to monitor all such developments and Church news reports, and will bring word thereof to you all here as time and circumstances allow. In the meantime, that does it for now. All comments are, as always, welcome and appreciated, on any post at any time, as long as the offered feedback is made per the established guidelines.

BREAKING TEMPLE NEWS: Late October Groundbreaking Set for the Willamette Valley Oregon Temple

Note: The initial version of this post was published at 10:45 AM, and updated between 5:30 and 7:00 PM with additional information and analysis

Hello again, everyone! The First Presidency has announced this morning that ground will be broken for the Willamette Valley Oregon Temple on Sunday, October 29 with Elder Valeri V. Cordon, First Counselor in the North America West Area Presidency, presiding. Further analysis on this development will be available here later today. For now, my thanks once again to you all.

Hello again, everyone! As noted above, I published an initial version of this post this morning during some downtime prior to my father-in-law's funeral. After having focused sufficient time on his funeral services and family time, I am back to provide additional commentary on the announcement. Firstly, I found the timing of the announcement slightly odd, given the fact that the groundbreaking was set for four months in the future.

Based on the fact that the Church, now has two temple groundbreakings scheduled for mid-to-late August and one now for late October, I am cautiously optimistic that the Church will be able to set at least a few other groundbreakings to occur between the August 27 groundbreaking for the Ephraim Utah Temple and the October 29 groundbreaking announced today for Oregon's third temple.

Among the most likely potential temples for which I anticipate announcements are the Teton River and Montpelier Idaho, Miraflores Guatemala City Guatemala, Belo Horizonte Brazil, Cali Colombia, Torreon and Queretaro Mexico, and Cape Town South Africa Temples. Per information from one of my Pacific Area contacts, I also anticipate action will be taken in the second half of this year towards groundbreakings for the Tarawa Kiribati, Port Vila Vanuatu, and Port Moresby Papua New Guinea Temples.

But I am also keeping my eyes open for other potential announcements. As some of you might recall, a report from December 1 of last year indicated that on November 26, Elder Larry S. Kacher presented the king of the Ashante in Kumasi Ghana a picture that appeared to show the exterior rendering for the temple in that city. If the Church confirms that that is the official rendering, and provides confirmation on the location of the temple site, a groundbreaking could soon follow.

As we also know, Expo 2020 wrapped up a month or so ago in Dubai UAE, so the transfer of the property to the Church could occur in the coming months, enabling a groundbreaking for the temple in that city to follow shortly after the confirmation of the specific location and exterior rendering. And with sites reportedly also acquired for the Managua Nicaragua, Lagos Nigeria, and Kaoshiung Taiwan Temples, groundbreakings for each of those temples could be forthcoming soon.

In particular relation to the Managua Nicaragua Temple, the last time I heard from my Central American contact (Patzicia) here, there were issues the Church was trying to work around relating to that temple. I don't quite know whether those issues have since been resolved, but I'm hopeful we might soon see action taken on that temple. As I've also mentioned, any of the other 10 temples in the United States in October 2021 and April 2022 could potentially have announcements made as well.

And for the remaining 29 other temples announced between April 2018 and April of this year, at least 8 others (Budapest Hungary, Brussels Belgium, Vienna Austria, Beira Mozambique, Singapore Republic of Singapore, Antananarivo Madagascar, Culiacan Mexico, and Vitoria Brazil) have had at least 1 potential location identified in photographic galleries.

If any of those locations are confirmed as the spots for those temples, the announcement of groundbreaking arrangements could occur at any time. It's also worth mentioning that, in view of the fact that there are now 6 temples with full-scale construction pending, I am hoping that at least a couple of them might soon have full-scale efforts begin.

Having shared these notes, I also wanted to mention that, in view of today's announcement, even with no other groundbreakings currently scheduled, the announcement about the groundbreaking for Oregon's third temple means that, by the time that is held on October 29, the Church will have broken ground for as many  temples then as it had last year on December 11.

And if the Church is able to schedule 9 or 10 more groundbreakings prior to the end of this year, the groundbreakings conducted in 2022 will match or exceed the number of temple groundbreakings held two years ago. For purposes of comparison, I'm again providing links for the side-by-side comparisons of temple groundbreakings in 2020 vs. 2021 and the now-updated 2021 vs. 2022. I will be interested to see what other temple developments might merit an announcement from the Church in the coming second half of this year.

Just by way of reminder, I will be posting my report on temple construction progress during the first half of 2022 in the early-morning hours when June 30 becomes July 1. I also continue to monitor all other Church news reports and any additional temple construction updates and will be sure to pass the word of those developments along as they cross my radar in the days, weeks, and months ahead.

In the meantime, that does it for now. All comments are, as always, welcome and appreciated, on any post at any time, as long as the offered feedback is made per the established guidelines. BREAKING TEMPLE NEWS: Opening Arrangements Announced for Two Temples in South America

Hello again, everyone! I have mentioned in the recent past that I felt that the timing on the Quito Ecuador and Belem Brazil Temple openings would be difficult to pinpoint. And that has been the case for a while now. It occurred to me to wonder if the openings for either or both would be delayed until other temples (such as the San Juan Puerto Rico, Feather River California, Saratoga Springs Utah, and Helena Montana Temples) were dedicated, or at least had opening arrangements announced.

I had also recently voiced the opinion that the Church would likely next set the rededication arrangements for the Columbus Ohio Temple and the dedication arrangements for the San Juan Puerto Rico Temple next before that happened for any other temples. Well, as He has so many times before, the Lord has proven me wrong on all of that. This morning, the First Presidency officially confirmed the opening arrangements for two South American temples, the Belem Brazil and Quito Ecuador Temples.  Let's break down the details:

Firstly, despite the time difference (Quito is 2 hours ahead of Belem), the arrangements for the Belem Brazil Temple are detailed before Quito Ecuador. Brazil's newest temple will have a two-week open house, running from Saturday October 22-Saturday November 5, excluding the Sundays of October 23 and 30. And the second Ecuadoran temple open house will be held over a 15-day period from Friday October 14-Saturday October 29, with the exception of the Sundays of October 16 and 23.

Here's the really interesting thing, though: The dedications of both temples are set to take place on Sunday November 20. The Church is sending Elder Dale G. Renlund to preside at the dedication of Brazil's newest temple, while the dedication of Quito's second will be under the direction of Elder Quentin L. Cook. Elder Renlund previously dedicated the Kinshasa Democratic Republic of the Congo Temple in 2019, while Elder Cook rededicated the Baton Rouge Louisiana Temple later that same year.

Because of the time difference between Belem Brazil and Quito Ecuador, the first dedicatory session will get underway for Ecuador's newest temple 2 hours before the first session of the Belem Brazil Temple dedication is held. So right now, the Quito Ecuador and Belem Brazil Temples are on track to become the 174th and 175th operating temples of the Church. However, there is a possibility, however remote, that if construction wraps up soon on the San Juan Puerto Rico, Feather River California, and Saratoga Springs Utah Temples, any of those could be dedicated before the November 20 dedication of these 2 temples.

It's also worth mentioning that the newest update on the Columbus Ohio Temple could also soon be announced, so it will be interesting to see what might happen there. Incidentally, I have received feedback indicating that the Church might conduct the dedication of the Helena Montana Temple sometime in December, so it will be interesting to see the timing on temple events for the back half of this year. For my part, I continue to monitor all such updates, including major Church news, and will be sure to continue to pass those updates along as time and circumstances allow.

In the meantime, that does it for now. All comments are, as always, welcome and appreciated, on any post at any time, as long as the offered feedback is made per the established guidelines. Thank you for the privilege of your time. I hope any of you who would like to share anything will take your opportunity to “sound off” in the comments below. BREAKING TEMPLE NEWS: Revised Rendering Released for Yorba Linda California Temple

Hello again, everyone! I have some breaking temple news to report. I had mentioned in the threads of another post that a provisional permit had been granted for the Yorba Linda California Temple, conditional on the Church reducing the height of the steeple. This afternoon, we now have information about the revised rendering, which was just released this afternoon. The spire has been lowered, and will now be located just above the entrance (the previous rendering showed the spire in the center of the temple).

Based on the fact that the Church has met the requirements to lower the spire, unless something changes, plans for the groundbreaking of that temple (which will occur next Saturday, June 18, on the same day as the groundbreaking for the Smithfield Utah Temple) are likely good to go ahead as scheduled. Speaking of the next two groundbreakings, the Church has indirectly confirmed today that the groundbreaking for the Yorba Linda California Temple will take place at 11:00 AM here in Utah, which is 10:00 AM in Yorba Linda. I haven't yet heard anything indicating what time the Smithfield Utah Temple groundbreaking might occur, but I assume that will be sometime around 11:00 AM as well. I will have reports on those events as soon as they are provided.

In the meantime, that does it for now. Any and all comments are, as always, welcome and appreciated, on any post at any time, as long as such feedback offered is consistent with the established guidelines.I hope any of you who would like to share anything will take your opportunity to “sound off” in the comments below. BREAKING TEMPLE NEWS: 12 More Temples Have Transitioned to Phase 4 (Normal Operations)

Hello again, everyone! Within the last few weeks, only the temple reopening status tracker has been updated, without corresponding updates being shared in a regular Church News article. In addition, the status tracker went from being updated on Tuesday to being updated on Wednesday in the last couple of weeks. When there was no new update yesterday, I had assumed (and may have asserted) that the Church would hold steady to its' existing status of temple reopenings.  But I am pleased to be able to report that today, not only has the status tracker been updated, the Church News has shared the first major update since May 17

So what has changed today? Let's take a look. 12 additional temples have begun the process of transitioning to phase 4 (normal operations). Those 12 include  3 in Europe (Helsinki Finland, Lisbon Portugal, and London England), 2 in the Philippines (Cebu City and Manila Philippines), 2 in the United States (Atlanta Georgia and Fort Lauderdale Florida), and 1 each in Africa (Accra Ghana), Asia (Yigo Guam) Brazil (Rio de Janeiro Brazil), Canada (Halifax Nova Scotia),  and the Pacific (Perth Australia).

As a result of these updates, 8 temples remain closed for renovation, with all 8 granted phase 3 status so that the patrons in those districts can schedule living and proxy ordinances at the nearest open temple. 1 other (Kyiv Ukraine) has had operations paused/suspended in phase 3 due to the ongoing Russian invasion. 1 more (Suva Fiji) remains in phase 1, with no temples in phases 2 or 2-B. As a result of today's update, 15 temples remain in phase 3, with the remaining 148 in phase 4 and returning to normal operations.

It did occur to me to wonder if the Church will grant any of the 8 temples closed for renovation a phase 4 status since most of the temples closest to those that are in various renovation stages are now in phase 4. In any case, with rededications scheduled for 4 of those 8 temples, the phase 4 transitions should follow their respective rededications. As I read about today's update, my gratitude for the inspiration attending such changes once again increased.

Given that all operating temples suspended operations in March of 2020, it is heartening to see the Church getting ever closer to normal operations for all of its' temples. That has been inspiring to watch. I continue to monitor all Church news developments and temple construction updates and will continue to bring those to you all here as I become aware thereof. In the meantime, that does it for now.

Any and all comments are, as always, welcome and appreciated, on any post at any time, as long as such feedback offered is consistent with the established guidelines. I hope any of you who would like to share anything will take your opportunity to “sound off” in the comments below.

BREAKING TEMPLE NEWS: 9 More Temples Will Transition to Phase 4

Hello again, everyone! The Church News shared yet another new report on temple reopenings this morning. The latest update indicates that 9 more temples of the Church will begin to transition to phase 4 (normal operations). Let's get into the details: 162 of the Church's 171 dedicated temples are operational. With 8 closed for major renovations, 1 other (the Rio de Janeiro Brazil Temple) has been dedicated and is anticipated to begin operations soon.

The 9 temples moving toward normal operations include: 4 in the United States (Boston Massachusetts, Hartford Connecticut, Louisville Kentucky, and Nashville Tennessee);  2 in Europe (Madrid Spain and Preston England) and 1 each in Canada (Montreal Quebec); Central America (San Salvador El Salvador); and Asia (Seoul Korea).

As a result of these details, the status of the Church's 171 temples stands as follows: 1 (Rio de Janeiro Brazil) will begin operations soon; 8 are closed for major renovations (with all 8 having been granted phase 3 status, allowing patrons in those districts to schedule phase 3 living and proxy work at the nearest temple); 1 (Kyiv Ukraine) has had operations paused/suspended in phase 3 out of an abundance of caution due to the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine; and 1 (Suva Fiji) remains in phase 1.

With no temples currently in phases 2 or 2-B, of the remaining temples, 26 are in phase 3 (those 26 do not include the 8 temples undergoing renovation, which are being separately categorized for the time being), and, with the changes announced today, the total number of temples now in phase 4 is 134. The Church News has also updated the temple reopening status tracker, which shows an area-by-area breakdown of temples worldwide.

Incidentally, on that status tracker, if you look at the Brazil Area specifically, there is an entry for the Rio de Janeiro Brazil Temple. The text on that entry reads: "Dedicated May 8, 2022. Ordination work for patrons begins May 19, 2022." I assume that "Ordination work" was supposed to be "Ordinance work" because otherwise, it doesn't make much sense. But if the temple is officially open for ordinance work on May 19, I assume that it will be granted phase 4 status right away, since all other Brazilian temples are now in phase 4.

Either way, the status of that temple is likely to be clarified by the Church News in the update next week. I will continue to monitor all updates from the Newsroom and the Church News, along with any updates on the status of temples in the construction queue (under construction, undergoing renovation, or those in various other phases) and pass those along to you all here as I become aware thereof.

In the meantime, that does it for now. Any and all comments are, as always, welcome and appreciated, on any post at any time, as long as such feedback offered is consistent with the established guidelines.  I hope any of you who would like to share anything will take your opportunity to “sound off” in the comments below.

BREAKING TEMPLE NEWS: August Groundbreakings Set for Ephraim Utah and Lubumbashi Democratic Republic of the Congo Temples

Hello again, everyone! I have breaking temple news to report today. Two temples of the Church will have groundbreakings in August. This morning, the First Presidency announced the arrangements for such ceremonies for the Lubumbashi Democratic Republic of the Congo and Ephraim Utah Temples. In conjunction with today's announcement, the general location, artist's rendering and details were announced for the Democratic Republic of the Congo's second temple.

Let's break down the details: The groundbreaking for the Lubumbashi DR Congo Temple will take place on Saturday August 20, 2022, under the direction of Elder Matthew L. Carpenter, the current First Counselor in the Africa Central Area presidency who, by the time of the groundbreaking, will transition to being the Area President. The temple will be built on a 2.57-acre site near the intersections of Av. Kashobwe, Av. Biyayi, and Av. Du Lac Kipopo. Plans call for a single-story temple of 19,300 square feet. Ancillary buildings (note the plural) of 31,000 square feet will house a distribution center for the Church and patron and missionary housing. We have another temple announced in April 2020 that has had official details confirmed.

In the meantime, as we know, the Ephraim Utah Temple was announcedin May of last year, with site identification following five months later (last October) and a rendering resed on March 4 of this year.

Ground will be broken for that temple on Saturday August 27. The First Presidency has asked Elder Walter F. González, the current Second Counselor in the Utah Area Presidency who will be released from that assignment on August 1 and will be released and granted emeritus status in October, to preside at that groundbreaking.

The fact that these two events are set for back-to-back weeks in mid-to-late August gives me hope that perhaps other temples might have their groundbreakings on the Saturdays of August 6 and 13.

I continue to monitor all such updates and will pass word of those along to you all here as I receive it. In the meantime, that does it for now. Any and all comments are, as always, welcome and appreciated, on any post at any time, as long as such feedback offered is consistent with the established guidelines.

BREAKING TEMPLE NEWS: 16 Temples Begin Transition to Normal Operations; "Traveling" Open House Being Conducted for Those in Yigo Guam Temple District

Hello again, everyone! In recent weeks, the timing of announcements about temple phase transitions has become slightly less predictable, with some announcements coming Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday morning rather than on Tuesday morning. So it has been difficult to anticipate the timing of such announcements each week, assuming there are any at all. Despite that, I am pleased to be able to report today that 16 additional temples will begin their transitions to phase 4 (normal operations) as soon as today.

The 16 temples include the following: 10 in Latin America (Buenos Aires and Cordoba Argentina; Concepcion and Santiago Chile; Guatemala City and Quetzaltenango Guatemala; Asuncion Paraguay; Montevideo Uruguay; Panama City Panama; and Tegucigalpa Honduras); 3 in Africa (Aba Nigeria, Durban South Africa, Kinshasa Democratic Republic of the Congo); 2 in the United States (Birmingham Alabama and Orlando Florida) and 1 in Europe (Paris France). These adjustments are also confirmed in the area-by-area temple status tracker

As a result of the latest adjustments, the reopening status of the Church's 170 currently-operating temples stands as follows: 8 are closed for major renovations (all of which have been granted a designation of phase 3, allowing patrons in those districts to schedule phase 3 appointments at the nearest temples open); 1 each with phase 3 operations suspended (Kyiv Ukraine) and in phase 1 (Suva Fiji); 0 in phases 2 and 2-B; 35 remaining in phase 3; and the remaining 125 which have transitioned or soon begin transitioning to phase 4 operations.

In view of today's announcement, 77.16% of the 162 currently-open temples are or will be returning to normal operations. Aside from the Kyiv Ukraine Temple, which is currently affected by the Russian invasion of that nation (which despite having previously moved on from Kyiv, has now seen action resume there), and the Suva Fiji Temple (where the transition to normal operations is being hindered by local COVID-19 conditions, among other factors), I believe in coming weeks that the 8 temples being renovation may be granted phase 4 status since the temples nearest to them have begun such transitions already.

The same is true of the 35 temples currently in phase 3. It has been interesting to watch the methodical way in which temple reopenings have occurred, and I again testify of the prophetic foresight guiding that process. But in addition to temple reopenings, there is another development I need to cover here. The Church is preparing to host tours of the Yigo Guam Temple.

Since some of the Saints in the forthcoming temple district are currently prohibited from traveling to Guam due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Church is bringing the experience of the temple open house through means of virtual tours and samples of materials used to furnish and beautify that edifice. The "traveling open house" will reach out to members and friends of other faiths in those regions to allow them to be part of that experience. That brings me to a potential correction I may need to make.

I had understood that the Church was using a multipurpose space in the temple that could serve alternately as an instruction room for the endowment or a sealing room. The open house pictures appear to indicate they will be separate spaces, which was not originally indicated when construction began. If that is correct, then it corrects and supersedes anything I previously said on that.

The VIP/invited guest tours have begun, with the formal open house starting tomorrow and going through May 14. The temple dedication will follow on Sunday May 22, under the direction of Elder David A. Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. I will monitor available resources for updates on that and bring word of those to you as they are reported. I also continue to monitor all Church news updates and temple developments and will bring you all word of those as I receive it.

In the meantime, that does it for now. Any and all comments are, as always, welcome and appreciated, on any post at any time, as long as such feedback offered is consistent with the established guidelines.  I hope any of you who would like to share anything will take your opportunity to “sound off” in the comments below. BREAKING TEMPLE NEWS: Number of Temples Transitioning to Normal Operations Now Exceeds 100

Hello again, everyone! As some of you might recall, last week, we had two temple reopening updates released on Tuesday and Wednesday. In the first comment I posted yesterday, I indicated that, with no new reopening updates reported, I was unsure whether the Church would share such a report later this week, or if they would hold steady for the time being with the information posted Wednesday.

This morning, I am pleased to report on the latest update from the Church, which was released by the Church News a short time ago. That update indicates that with additional phase 4 transitions that occurred yesterday and today, the number of temples making the transition to phase 4 now officially exceeds 100. As of Tuesday April 26, the following 23 temples that began transitioning to phase 4 included:

13 temples in Mexico (Cuidad Juarez, Colonia Juárez Chihuahua, Guadalajara, Hermosillo Sonora, Merida, Mexico City, Monterrey, Oaxaca, Tampico, Tijuana, Tuxtla Guitierrez, Veracruz, and Villahermosa Mexico); 7 in the United States (Meridian and Pocatello Idaho, Logan Utah, Manhattan New York,  Nauvoo Illinois, St. Louis Missouri, and Star Valley Wyoming); and 3 elsewhere in the world (Papeete Tahiti, Port-au-Prince Haiti, and Santo Domingo Dominican Republic).

The following 3 temples in the Western United States began transitioning to phase 4 effective today: Fresno California, Medford Oregon, and Seattle Washington. As a result of the changes to these 26 temples, the status of all Church temples now stands as follows, effective today: 8 are closed for major renovations (with all 8 designated as phase 3, allowing patrons in those districts to schedule living or proxy work at the nearest phase 3 temples open to them).

Phase 3 operations at the Kyiv Ukraine Temple remain paused/suspended due to the ongoing Russian invasion. The Suva Fiji Temple remains in phase 1.  And with 0 temples in phase 2 or 2-B, there are now 51 temples still in phase 3, and the remaining 109 are now in phase 4 (returning to normal operations). These changes can be confirmed in the area-by-area status tracker.

The Church remains committed to a carefully-planned, cautiously-coordinated effort to move all 170 temples worldwide towards resuming normal pre-pandemic operations. As I've watched that process unfold, I have become even more convinced of and profoundly grateful for the prophetic foresight that continues to guide this process. In the coming weeks, I will be interested to see if future updates are published on Monday or Tuesday, or if the announcement today shifts those updates to Wednesday.

I continue to monitor any and all Church news updates and newly-reported temple developments, and remain committed to bringing word of those to you all here as I become aware thereof. In the meantime, that does it for now. Any and all comments are, as always, welcome and appreciated, on any post at any time, as long as such feedback offered is consistent with the established guidelines.

BREAKING TEMPLE NEWS: Additional Phase 4 Transitions Announced; More than Half of Temples Worldwide Now Open in that Phase

Hello again, everyone! On the heels of yesterday's announcement that the number of temples in Phase 4 was almost doubling, I am stunned and thrilled to be posting with yet another update: A new announcement made this afternoon indicates that more temples have been set to start transitioning to Phase 4. The latest changes are also outlined in the newly-updated status tracker. With that said, let's get to the details of today's unexpected additional update:

11 more temples began that transition as of today. The temples in question are: Calgary and Edmonton Alberta; Baton Rouge Louisiana; Detroit Michigan; Johannesburg South Africa; Palmyra New York; Philadelphia Pennsylvania; Regina Saskatchewan; Toronto Ontario; Vancouver British Columbia; and Winnipeg Manitoba.

As a result of today's announcement the reopening status for each of our current temples breaks down as follows: 8 are closed for major renovations (all of which have been designated a phase 3 status, allowing patrons within those districts to schedule living and proxy work at temples closest to them); 1 (Kyiv Ukraine) continues to have operations paused/suspended; 1 more is in phase 1; and with 0 in either phases 2 or 2-B, that leaves 77 temples in phase 3, and the remaining 83 in phase 4.

Although this announcement was unexpected today, I am grateful to have been able to learn about this and to pass the information along to you all here. I continue to monitor all Church news updates and temple developments and will do my best to pass all such updates along as I learn about them. In the meantime, that does it for now.

BREAKING TEMPLE NEWS: Number of Temples Announced for Phase 4 Reopening Almost Doubles

Hello again, everyone! Last week, we got the unexpected announcement that 37 temples had begun or would soon begin a transition to phase 4 operations (marking a return back to pre-pandemic temple operations). I shared my opinion in that previous report that other temples could also soon start to transition to more normal operations. So I am pleased to report this morning that another significant update from the Church on temple reopenings has been provided. With today's announcement, the number of temples transitioning to phase 4 will almost double from 37 to 72 of the Church's current 170 operating temples. Let's break down the details:

4 of the 35 additional temples actually began that process before today's announcement. The four temples (and the dates the transitions began, listed in parentheses) are Newport Beach California (March 27), Kona Hawai.i (April 4), Raleigh North Carolina (April 13), and Sacramento California (April 16). The remaining 31 all started their transition today.

Those temples are: Gilbert, Mesa, Phoenix, Snowflake, and The Gila Valley Arizona;  Bountiful, Brigham City, and Ogden Utah;  Dallas, Houston, Lubbock, and San Antonio Texas; Arequipa, Lima, and Trujillo Peru;  Boise, Idaho Falls, and Twin Falls Idaho; Barranquilla and Bogota Colombia; Los Angeles and Oakland California; Las Vegas and Reno Nevada; Albuquerque New Mexico; Caracas Venezuela; Cardston Alberta; Cochabamba Bolivia; Fort Collins Colorado;  Guayaquil Ecuador; Kona Hawaii;  Oklahoma City Oklahoma; and Raleigh North Carolina.

As a result of these changes, the phase breakdown for the 170 temples of the Church is as follows: 8 are closed for major renovations (with all 8 being granted phase 3 designations, allowing patrons in those districts to schedule phase 3 ordinances at the nearest open temple); 1 more (Kyiv Ukraine) continues to have its' reopening suspended until further notice; 1 in phase 1; 0 in phases 2 and 2-B; 88 remaining in phase 3; and, of course, the remaining 72 are now beginning to return to normal operations.

These updates have also been detailed in the status tracker for temple reopenings. Oddly enough, the Newsroom release for temple reopenings has not yet been updated with this information. As always, I am grateful for the inspired way that temple reopenings have been handled, and I am pleased to have been able to pass those updates along. I continue to monitor any and all Church news and temple updates and will do my best to pass those along to you all as I become aware thereof.

In the meantime, that does it for now. Any and all comments are, as always, welcome and appreciated, on any post at any time, as long as such feedback offered is consistent with the established guidelines. BREAKING TEMPLE NEWS: First 37 Temples Will Gradually Return to Normal Operations (Phase 4)

Hello again, everyone! This just in from the Church News: the first 37 temples will gradually return to phase 4 (normal operations). The Memphis Tennessee Temple was the first to do so, starting that process on March 17; followed by the St. Paul Minnesota Temple on March 19; the Bismarck North Dakota, Denver Colorado, and Winter Quarters Nebraska Temples on March 29; the Tucson Arizona Temple on April 4; and the Columbia South Carolina and Kansas City Missouri Temples on April 5.

As of yesterday (April 11), the following temples are also phasing in a return to normal operations: Cedar City, Draper, Jordan River, Monticello, Mount Timpanogos, Oquirrh Mountain, Payson, Provo, Provo City Center, and Vernal Utah; Campinas, Curitiba, Fortaleza, Manaus, Porto Alegre, Recife, and São Paulo Brazil; Frankfurt and Freiberg Germany; Redlands and San Diego California; Bern Switzerland; Laie Hawaii; Portland Oregon; and Stockholm Sweden. And today, the Billings Montana and Chicago Illinois Temples began the transition to phase 4.

Effective today, 8 temples are closed for major renovations, all of which are in phase 3; 1 (Kyiv Ukraine) has operations paused/suspended having reached phase 3 previously; 1 more is operating in phase 1; 0 are in phases 2 and 2-B; 123 are now in phase 3; and, as noted, the remaining 37 are gradually returning to regular operations. These updates are reflected in the temple reopening status tracker.

I have a feeling more temples will begin the transition to normal operations in the coming weeks. I will keep my eyes open for those updates, and all other major Church news and temple developments. In the meantime, that does it for now. Any and all comments are, as always, welcome and appreciated, on any post at any time, as long as such feedback offered is consistent with the established guidelines.

BREAKING TEMPLE NEWS: Opening Arrangements Announced for Hamilton New Zealand Temple

Note: An original version of this post was published on 4/11/22 @ 2:15 PM, with subsequent additional analysis added between 6:35 and 7:35 PM.

Hello again, everyone! This afternoon,  the First Presidency announced reopening arrangements for the Hamilton New Zealand Temple. Before getting into the details of the announcement, I'd like to note that the reopening is occurring later this year than I had thought it might.

Given the fact that New Zealand has quickly locked down its' borders in the face of COVID-19 and its' variants, I had thought the reopening arrangements could occur soon after New Zealand reopens its' borders, which is due to happen at some point in the next 3-6 weeks, based on the information I found online about 2 weeks ago.

But I've mentioned in the past that, because of my ongoing preparation to cover major Church news updates and temple developments, anytime the Church announces anything, as soon as I hear or read any such announcement, in that same instance, the Lord confirms to me through His Spirit that what has been announced is His will for His Church at this time.

And as I share further analysis on the details of today's announcement, I hope you will all remember this statement: The Lord has proven yet again that His ways and thoughts will, as they always do, trump any analysis or prediction I have offered at any point pertaining to the timing of any temple event, including, in this particular case, the reopening of the Hamilton New Zealand Temple.

The arrangements, though unexpected in timing to this mortal mind of mine, are exactly what they need to be and are inspired, full stop. Monday August 22 has been designated a media day, with VIP tours for invited guests from Tuesday August 22-Thursday August 24. The public open house will run from Friday August 26-Saturday September 17, 2022, with the exception of the relevant Sundays (August 28 and September 4 and 11).

At the conclusion of the open house, final preparations will be made for the dedication in the four intervening weeks. A youth devotional for those within the Hamilton New Zealand temple district will be held on Saturday October 15, and the temple will be rededicated in three sessions held the following day at 9:00 AM, noon, and 3:00 PM Hamilton time, which will be 3:00 PM, 6:00 PM, and 9:00 PM on Saturday October 15 here in Utah.

By assignment from the First Presidency, Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles will preside at the youth devotional and rededication. I take that as further proof of my theory that the responsibility for presiding at temple rededications will continue to be delegated to either the First Presidency counselors or the senior half of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

It's also worth noting that, beginning last year, there was a bit of a rotation of assignments in councils, committees, and area supervision for the members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. I seem to recall (but could not find again) a report from last year in which it was noted that Elder Uchtdorf had conducted the annual area review for one of the Asia Areas.

So it's possible that if his area supervisory responsibilities have shifted to part of Asia, that the regions he oversees are geographically closer to the Pacific than any of the other senior apostles. But that's just my personal theory. As with anything else I share on this blog, unless it is specifically backed by official Church sources, please take any theories I offer with the proverbial grain of salt.

And unless and until they are confirmed or corrected by official sources, they are no more and no less than my own opinion. Having noted that, I present a new theory: with the Hamilton New Zealand Temple rededication not taking place until October, I fully anticipate that August and September could be big months for the dedications of new temples.

We now have two (Belem Brazil and San Juan Puerto Rico) which are nearing completion, and the Saratoga Springs Utah and Helena Montana Temples might not be too far behind. I also think it's safe to anticipate that the rededication of the Columbus Ohio Temple could occur between the already-announced rededications of the Washington D.C. Temple (on August 14) and the October 16 rededication for the Hamilton New Zealand Temple.

There are a lot more temple announcements that are anticipated to come down the pike in the coming weeks and months. To the best of my ability, I will continue to cover those and any other major announcements from the Church. In the meantime, that does it for now. Any and all comments are, as always, welcome and appreciated, on any post at any time, as long as such feedback offered is consistent with the established guidelines.
