BREAKING NEWS: Health Updates on President Nelson and Elder Holland

Hello again, everyone! New health updates have been provided for President Russell M. Nelson and Elder Jeffrey R. Holland.  Shortly after his 99th birthday, President Nelson fell. Having prescribed similar treatment for other patients in similar information, the prophet will be following doctor's orders to rest and will not be present for General Conference weekend. 

His social media update on this indicates that he hopes to record his message (singular). I assume that refers to either his main message for Sunday morning or his concluding remarks on Sunday Afternoon. As a result, I anticipate his counselors will step up to the plate and fill in for him in opening and closing the conference, and, if necessary, announcing any new updates, including new temples, unless the prophet prerecords that message to close the conference.

Meanwhile, Elder Holland continues to recuperate at home from his recent hospital stay and will be watching remotely. The article didn't say anything about him prerecording his remarks, so I assume we won't hear from him again this weekend. But hopefully, both the prophet and Elder Holland will be able to be present and fully participate in General Conference in April.

I don't know what this means for my General Conference predictions, but I will figure that out and have the updates ready to go in my 10:00 PM post tonight that will share the final version of those predictions. In the interim, I continue to monitor all Church News, Newsroom, and Church of Jesus Christ Temples updates and will continue to pass those along as time and circumstances allow. Church President and Prophet Russell M. Nelson Celebrates His 99th Birthday

Hello again, everyone! I am back once again, this time to share a post in tribute to our beloved prophet, Church President Russell M. Nelson, who officially marks his 99th birthday today, thus becoming the first apostle and prophet of this dispensation to reach that age milestone. So let's talk about this wonderful man whom we sustain as the prophet, seer and revelator for the Church, and the only man currently authorized to speak in behalf of the Lord. Russell Marion Nelson was born in Salt Lake City Utah to Marion C. and Edna Anderson Nelson on this day in 1924 (just a day before the birth of Boyd K. Packer, his future immediate predecessor to the Presidency of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles).

Though he grew up in a loving family, his parents were not active in the Church. As a teenager, he went looking for books about the Church at Deseret Book. His parents allowed him and his siblings to be baptized when he was 16. President Nelson married his first wife, Dantzel, in the Salt Lake Temple. They have nine daughters and one son. When his wife unexpectedly died in 2005, he described having "inconsolable grief" for a time. He married Wendy Watson, a BYU professor, the following April.

He studied at LDS Business College and went on to obtain his BA and MD at the University of Utah. He simultaneously trained as a surgeon and did doctoral studies at the University of Utah. He was part of the research team that developed the heart-lung machine that was first used for an open-heart operation on a human being in 1951. He spent two years on medical duty for the US Army during the Korean War, then underwent another training period in Boston at the prestigious Harvard Medical School's Massachusetts General Hospital.

At one key point in his medical career, the University of Chicago was anxious to get him to come and teach at their school of medicine, so the president of that university asked Dallin H., Oaks, then a professor at the law school, to try and persuade him to come. Then-Brother Oaks did his best to convince then-Brother Nelson to accept the offer. But Church President David O. McKay advised Brother Nelson not to go, so he turned down that opportunity.

In 1955, he accepted a teaching opportunity at the University of Utah School of Medicine, where he built his own heart-and-lung machine. Around a year later, he was on duty to perform the first pediatric cardiac operation. In 1960, he performed the first successful operative repair of a tricuspid heart valve. Being worried that a surgical procedure he had been asked to perform was too risky for anyone, he requested and received a blessing from then-Elder Spencer W. Kimball, who was one of his patients.

That surgery was a success, and he later used the same technique to operate on Elder Kimball himself, a risky procedure, which only moved forward following a pointed directive from President Harold B. Lee, who at that time was serving as First Counselor in the First Presidency. While performing that operation, Brother Nelson had the overwhelming feeling that President Kimball would one day be President of the Church.

As a result of that operation's success, Church members were blessed to enjoy the counsel and ministry of President Kimball for almost another decade and a half. The doctor-patient relationship he experienced with President Kimball enabled Brother Nelson to write a letter of assurance about President Kimball's health when the latter was called as Church President.

He has served in many positions on different hospital boards and has received several awards for his pioneering work. He likewise had many service opportunities in the Church. He served as a stake president for over six years, during which time he served alongside another future apostle, Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin.

In mid-1970, Ernest L. Wilkinson, then president of BYU, submitted his resignation, which went into effect early the following year. As Neal A. Maxwell, Commissioner of Church Education, searched for a replacement, Brother Nelson was one of the candidates considered for the position, which was in due course filled by Brother Nelson's future apostolic seatmate, Dallin H. Oaks.

In the meantime, Brother Nelson was called in June of 1971 as the Sunday School General President (during which time, Brother Wirthlin would again serve alongside him.) Brother Nelson would go on to also serve in the now-defunct calling of regional representative, during which time, having been present when President Kimball suggested that some of them should learn Mandarin Chinese, took on that task in obedience to the prophet's counsel.

In April 1984, with the advice and consent of President Spencer W. Kimball, President Gordon B. Hinckley, then Second Counselor in the First Presidency, called Brother Nelson to fill one of two vacancies in the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. Then-Brother Oaks was called to fill the other vacancy, and the two have sat side-by-side in the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles since that time.

In the natural course of life between then-Elder Nelson's apostolic call (announced on April 7, 1984) and early July 2015, the Church had lost 4 Chrch Presidents and all of the apostles senior to then-Church President Thomas S. Monson, in addition to all apostles junior to President Monson but senior to Elder Nelson. The last of those was President Boyd K. Packer, whose passing on July 3, 2015 led to Elder Nelson becoming the de facto President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. He was officially set apart in that capacity 12 days later, on Wednesday July 15, 2015, by Church President Thomas S. Monson, who had by that time begun to decrease his involvement in the day-to-day administration of the Church.

When the Church released an official statement in mid-May 2017, which noted that President Monson would no longer be taking an active role in leading the Church, as President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, President Nelson filled a vital role in assisting President Monson's counselors, President Henry B. Eyring and then-President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, in taking care of the day-to-day administration of the Church.

When President Monson passed away on January 2. 2018, President Nelson directed the affairs of the Church as the senior apostle (and the de facto Acting President of the Church) for 12 days before his ordination and setting apart as Church President.

Following his ordination, he met individually with each of the other 12 apostles to get their input on who should serve as his counselors and who should be called to fill the resulting 2 vacancies in the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. Once that process was complete, he selected as his counselors his seatmate, Elder Oaks, and Elder Eyring, who had served as a counselor to both Presidents Monson and Gordon B. Hinckley, as his First and Second Counselors, respectively, in the First Presidency. As a result of that reorganization, Elder Uchtdorf again took his place in the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. During the broadcast and subsequent press conference when the new First Presidency was introduced to the world on Tuesday January 16, President Nelson paid tribute to his predecessor's counselors and mentioned that both were willing to now serve where they were most needed. The responsibilities assigned to Elder Uchtdorf were those previously held by the senior three apostles of the Church, Presidents Nelson and Oaks, and the new Acting President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, M. Russell Ballard.

Even prior to serving as President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, or subsequently as President of the Church, President Nelson took great care of his fellow Brethren in the apostleship.

Many of you will recall how, in the midst of an address about charity, the pure love of Christ, Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin began shaking uncontrollably, In a silent demonstration of what his colleague was teaching, Elder Nelson stood by and supported Elder Wirthlin until he closed his address, then gently helped him back to his seat. Not long after Elder Richard G. Scott underwent a needed surgical procedure, he was surprised to learn that President Nelson had stood inside the operating room observing the procedure in its entirety.

And, of course, as recounted during the funeral of Elder Robert D. Hales, following the Sunday Morning Session of the October 2017 General Conference, President Nelson felt impressed skip his lunch break and go immediately to the hospital to visit Elder Robert D. Hales, who passed away within a few minutes after President Nelson arrived.

President Nelson has demonstrated a keen intellect, a willingness to seek for and follow revelation from the Lord, and an undeviating loyalty and full commitment to his family, his Church, and his apostolic colleagues. We have seen him respond swiftly to such revelation, and perhaps the greatest details of the revelation he continues to receive regularly are yet-to-be revealed in the upcoming General Conference.

I have always been impressed and touched by President Nelson's remarks. He has given 110 addresses thus far in General Conference, including 65 following his call to the apostleship, 5 given while he served as President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, and 40 so far which he has given since becoming President of the Church. By all accounts, he continues to think, move, and act with the health, vigor, and energy of one 20-30 years younger than his current 99 years. Something Sister Nelson has repeated in public comments lately is that she is highly suspicious of his birth certificate, because he is anything but a typical 99-year-old.

I am grateful for the chance to have paid this birthday tribute to President Nelson. He and all of the other apostles have my unequivocal and everlasting support and sustaining vote. I know for myself that President Russell M. Nelson is a prophet of God, that he will not lead us astray, that he speaks for and on the behalf of he Lord and that we will be blessed by the Lord as we follow the counsel given by His chosen mouthpiece.

UPDATED: Current Apostolic Data

Hello again, everyone! It has been a tradition on this blog for me to provide updates on apostolic data every 7 weeks. Having last done so on Sunday, May 7, it is time to publish the newest such data. As with every two-part update, the first part contains updated data about the age and tenure length records for all 17 Church Presidents, in addition to updated information on the tenure length records for each of the 28 Presidents of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. 

The first document likewise notes information on the tenure length rankings for three sets of apostolic groups: the longest-serving First Presidencies (which will not be updated with the current First Presidency until 2024), in addition to the longest-serving groups of members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, and groups of all ordained apostles (the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles), and an overview of when each of those current groups will move up on the list.

Meanwhile, the second part of today's update shows the long-form and decimal ages for the members of the current First Presidency, Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, and the apostolic groups overall, in addition to the average ages of each group and apostolic nonagenarians (with 4 of the current 15 apostles being on that list), and a final table showing the remaining time between today and when each of the other 11 apostles will become nonagenarians and join that list. With these updates coming every 7 weeks, the next update will be posted here on August 13. Hopefully, this shared data will be of interest to you all. BREAKING NEWS: Elder Holland Resumes Full-Time Ministry; Update on Current Apostolic Milestones

Hello again, everyone! In view of President Eyring's 90th birthday yesterday, the Church now has 4 nonagenarian apostles serving for the first time in Church history. In a surprising update, an essay written by Elder Jeffrey R. Holland highlights the blessing of having older, more mature leaders in the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. 

Elder Holland's article referenced a small gathering for President Eyring's birthday, which means the article served as confirmation that Elder Holland has officially resumed his full-time apostolic ministry following his recent medical leave. Aside from that good news update, the Church News also reports that, as of today, the current group of 15 apostles in the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles is officially the sixth-longest tenured group in Church history. 

That update does not match the data I shared in my last apostolic milestone update, which indicated that the current group of 15 apostles actually moved up to the sixth spot on that list on April 27 of this year. I think that can be explained by using a different criteria for calculating that than I used, but I'm not sure on that. It is true they remain in the sixth spot now, and they will move up to the fifth spot on that list of apostolic groups in August. I am grateful to have learned of these key updates and to pass them along to you all here.

I continue to monitor all Church News, Newsroom, and temple construction updates and will bring word of those to you all here as I become aware thereof. In the meantime, that does it for now. Initial Predictions for the October 2023 General Conference

Hello again, everyone! In the absence of any major announcements by the Church this week, I have been able to put together the initial draft of my predictions for the October 2023 General Conference. First up, as always, we have my predictions for the potential speaker lineup. A few notes on that: Last conference marked only the third time that President Nelson didn't deliver any remarks to open the General Conference. 

I don't know if that means he won't be speaking in any of the opening sessions for however many General Conferences he continues to serve as prophet, so I wanted to at least allow for the possibility. Secondly, as acknowledged in the one footnote to these predictions, last conference, President Oaks not only presented new GA Seventies, he also noted the upcoming August 1 release of 3 GA Seventies and led the group sustaining of the changes in area seventies and the advanced sustaining of the incoming Young Women General Presidency.

Since all of the changes effective on or before August 1 were already presented last time, the sustaining in October is likely to only include the First Presidency, the President and Acting President of the Quorum of the Twelve, the members of that Quorum, and a motion to sustain all other GA Seventies, area seventies, and general officers as presently constituted. Since that process may only take a couple of minutes, it is possible that more general Church leaders could speak in the Saturday Afternoon Session than I have predicted here.

With the major changes already noted, these predictions mark the first time that they do not include a document showing the likely changes in Church leadership. It's also worth noting that, of course, I am assuming that all apostles will be able to speak in October and that the Saturday Evening Session will again be open to all members and friends of the Church. 

So the only other element remaining are my predictions for the most likely locations in which new temples could be announced. Regarding the likely new temples, if the information I have is correct, President Nelson may announce a minimum of 35 temples per year. If that remains the case for this year, then with 15 new temples announced earlier this month, the Church may look to having a minimum of 20 others announced in October. 

I see no reason to not believe that will be the minimum possible number of temples. With those introductory notes shared, the rest of the predictions largely speak for themselves. I am pleased, therefore, to declare the commenting period for these initial predictions officially opened. That commenting period will remain active until Thursday, October 2, at 10:00 PM, which will then give me 36 hours to finalize these predictions.

Unless the Church continues to take a temporary hiatus on temple construction announcements, I assume the next major announcement will be shared on Monday. In the interim, I continue to monitor all major Church News and Newsroom updates and any other temple construction updates and will be sure to pass those along to you all as they cross my radar.

UPDATE: Post-Conference Documents

 Hello again, everyone! WA little over a week since the April 2023 General Conference convened, I wanted to share my post-conference document analysis. First, I wanted to provide a report on my predictions for General Conference. First up is the review of my predictions for the speaker lineup, the changes in general Church leadership, (and the statistical report), and, of course, the most likely;prospective temple locations. As a result of those predictions vs. what actually happened, I have taken the opportunity to analyze and score those predictions.

Some reminders on the scoring might be helpful. Regarding my projected speaker lineup, 3 points were awarded if I got the right speaker in the right position in the right session. Some examples of that are my correct predictions that President Dallin H. Oaks would conduct the Saturday Morning Session,and that Elder Gerrit W. Gong would speak in the exact spot he did in the same session. 

Two points were awarded if I got the right speaker in the right session but in the wrong position. Some examples of that were Eldeers Gary E. Stevenson and Quentin L. Cook,who both spoke in the first session, but not in the spots I projected. One point was awarded when I correctly predicted that a leader would speak at any point in the conference, but had them both in the wrong session and the wrong order in that session. 

Examples of that are Camille N. Johnson, who spoke Sunday Morning rather than Saturday Evening, and Elder Carl B. Cook, who spoke Saturday Morning rather than Sunday Morning. And of course, anything I had not predicted that occurred was given a score of 0. Examples of that are most of the GA Seventies who spoke. Regarding my predictions for changes in general Church leadership, each element was worth 3 points. 

I correctly protected new GA Seventies, changes in area seventies, and the Young Women General Presidency, and I was also correct about changes in the Young Men General Presidency. there were 3 points On the temple locations, 3 points meant I had the correct location exactly right (Jakarta Indonesia is an example), with 2 points for having the correct general region but the wrong specific location (one of the 2 Philippines temples was unexpected). 

1 point meant an unexpected announcement for states where I had predicted new temples. And there was a score of 0 for locations where I wasn't predicting a new temple, but one was announced (the temples in Missouri, Virginia, and Pennsylvania are examples). I gave myself a small margin of error on both the temple predictions and the speaker lineup since there were some things I couldn't have predicted.

So, as reflected in the scorecard, even though there was a lot about this conference that I had no way to predict, what I put together yielded a 58.6% accuracy rate, and with all of the unknowns, I'm satisfied with that. If that was all I had to pass along tonight, I'd be satisfied therewith, but I do have a few more items. As I usually do, I have also been able to compile a document showing the lengths of each apostolic address. 

I have likewise updated the document showing the total number of General Conference addresses given by each of our current apostles. And I have also created a mock-up of what I think the table of contents might look like for the May 2023 Liahona. I will be sure to provide a follow-up on how my mock-up table of contents compares with the actual thing once that is available.

I likewise continue to monitor all Church news updates and temple developments and will be sure to post here with the latest on that as I become aware thereof. Unless there is a good reason for the Church not to do so, I am fully expecting that the next major temple construction update from the Church will be published tomorrow during the 2:00 PM hour. You can count on my analysis thereof ASAP after that announcement is made.

BREAKING TEMPLE NEWS: President Nelson Announces 15 New Temples as the April 2023 General Conference Concludes

Hello again, everyone! In all but one of the Church's 10 previous General Conferences held since early 2018, the Sunday Afternoon Session has usually concluded with closing remarks and the announcement of new temples by our beloved prophet, President Russell M. Nelson. Today was no different. I am pleased to report that 15 new templeshave been announced in each of the following locations: 

Retalhuleu Guatemala; Iquitos Peru; Teresina & Natal Brazil; Tuguegarao City & Iloilo Philippines; Jakarta Indonesia; Hamburg Germany; Lethbridge Alberta Canada; San Jose and Bakersfield California; Springfield Missouri; Charlotte North Carolina; Winchester Virginia; and Harrisburg Pennsylvania. Today's announcement brings the total number of temples in the Church to 315, 133 (42% of which President Nelson has personally announced).

I had the following 9 locations exactly correct: Iquitos Peru, Teresina and Natal Brazil, Jakarta Indonesia, Hamburg Germany, Lehtbridge Alberta Canada, San Jose and Bakersfield California, and Charlotte North Carolina. I had the right general location but the wrong specific location for the following temples: Retalhuleu Guatemala & Tuguegaro City & Iloilo Philippines, And the following temples announced were not on my radar, but perhaps they should have been: Springfield Missouri, Winchester Virginia, and Harrisburg Pennsylvania.

As a general note, unless I am mistaken, Sister Wendy Nelson is a native of Raymond Alberta, and the temple in Lethbridge will likely serve the area in which she grew up. Matthew Martinich, who maintains the Church Growth Blog, will likely have more information on this than I could provide here. With today's announcement of new temples, the Church may or may not have another major temple construction update announced at around 2:00 PM tomorrow afternoon.

UPDATED: April 2023 General Conference Predictions (Final Version)

Hello again, everyone! On this Thursday, with 36 hours remaining until the April 2023 General Conference, I wanted to pass along the final version of my predictions for the upcoming conference. But before I get into those, a disclaimer: I have no inside information, nor do I claim any special inspiration that would lead me to assert that these predictions are in any way an accurate representation of what will occur this weekend. Such inspiration is solely in the purview of the prophet of the Church. 

That being said, I have noticed some patterns in General Conference upon which these predictions are based. And whether I am correct or incorrect about any of these elements, I always enjoy seeing if and how my predictions based on those patterns stack up against what actually transpires over General Conference weekend. So I hope none of you takes these predictions as inspired or gospel, because they are neither. 

With that disclaimer noted, first up, we have the projected speaker lineup (which includes the alterations I made based on the announcement that the Saturday Evening Session would be two hours rather than 1.5 hours). The speaker lineup is relatively self-explanatory. I will just add that I anticipate that the prophet will conclude the Saturday Morning Session rather than opening it, especially if the recommendations of his physicians are to be seated while he gives those remarks. If that happens, President Eyring will likely be the first speaker in that session. 

The second document shows the changes I anticipate will be made in general Church leadership, and also the projected data for the Statistical Report, 2022. With the exception of the temples dedicated and rededicated, the temple total, and the stake and mission totals, those figures are based on a somewhat complex algorithm that is difficult to explain.

And the third document shows the list of potential locations in which a temple announcement appears most likely for this General Conference. As I have noted previously, I heard last year that 35 new temples would be announced, and since that happened, and since President Nelson has made new temple announcements a prominent part of his prophetic tenure, I believe we will see a minimum of 40 new temples announced this year. 

If that happens, I anticipate a 21/19 or a 19/21 split between April and October. I have been slightly more specific in my selections in another document that shows the temples announced every 6 months by geographical areas of the Church. The more specific list for this conference is at the bottom of that document.

I will be tuned in to General Conference throughout this weekend and will bring you the latest major updates and announcements as they are publicly released. In the meantime, since midnight tomorrow marks the end of the first quarter of 2022, stay tuned for my first quarter 2023 review of temple construction progress just before that time tomorrow.

UPDATED: Current Apostolic Data

 Hello again, everyone! It has been a tradition on this blog for me to provide updates on apostolic data every 7 weeks. Having last done so on Sunday, January 29, it is time to publish the newest such data. As with every two-part update, the first part contains updated data about the age and tenure length records for all 17 Church Presidents, in addition to updated information on the tenure length records for each of the 28 Presidents of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

The first document likewise notes information on the tenure length rankings for three sets of apostolic groups: the longest-serving First Presidencies (which will not be updated with the current First Presidency until 2024), in addition to the longest-serving groups of members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, and groups of all ordained apostles (the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles), in addition to when each of those current groups will move up on the list.

Meanwhile, the second part of today's update shows the long-form and decimal ages for the members of the current First Presidency, Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, and the apostolic groups overall, in addition to the average ages of each group and apostolic nonagenarians (with 3 of the current 15 apostles being on that list), and a final table showing the remaining time between today and when each of the other 12 apostles will become nonagenarians and join that list. With these updates coming every 7 weeks, the next update (which will be posted here on Sunday May 7) will be the last one before President Eyring joins the list of apostolic nonagenarians.

Church President Russell M. Nelson Observes His 5th Anniversary as Prophet

Hello again, everyone! As I mentioned in passing yesterday, my recovery from my minor procedure on Thursday has been unpredictable. Despite that, I feel I would be remiss if I did not take a moment on this Saturday to acknowledge the 5th anniversary of the prophetic tenure of Church President Russell M. Nelson. Of our 17 Church Presidents, only 4 have served for less than 5 years.

I don't think that any extensive analysis on my part would be adequate enough to honor this milestone. Thankfully in advance of this milestone, highlighted summaries have been featured by both the Newsroom and the Church News. 

Among the key highlights has been a focus on revelation and prophetic invitations, a summary of what 3 of President Nelson's 8 surviving children shared about him as a husband, father, surgeon, apostle, and prophet (which was detailed more fully in a special edition of the Church News podcast), and 99 announcements, and changes which have occurred in the Church since January 2018.

Prophetic invitations and the blessings that followed have been pivotal as well. And what our prophet has accomplished through inspiration and revelation has been astounding. His 5-year ministry bears striking similarities to the strategy for playing Scrabble. He has taken major steps to unify the worldwide Church by differentiating between what is doctrinal and what has been merely traditional, bucking the expected trends repeatedly.

Under his direction, the Church now has three global magazines, is awaiting the arrival of new hymnbooks and children's songbooks to also be used worldwide, has now seen the appointment of the first Asian-American and Latin-American apostles, has seen restructuring efforts affecting the Elders' and High Priests' Quorums, ward Young Men Presidencies, and stake Sunday School and Young Men Presidencies.

For the first time ever in Church history, all current apostles have individually presided at one temple dedication or rededication. And President Nelson has surpassed 15th Church President Gordon B. Hinckley as the oldest living prophet and the prophet to announce the most temples. The 118 temples announced around the world in the last five years have brought the total number of worldwide temples to an even 300.

Additionally, the Church is well on track to have 200 operating temples within the next 18 months or less, and the Church could almost certainly have 300 temples dedicated by the bicentennial anniversary of the Church (Saturday, April 6, 2030). President Nelson is not only the oldest living prophet but is the older living apostle as well.

The prophet's apostolic colleagues, his wife, and his children all say he is hard to keep up with and continue to report that he acts with the energy and vigor of someone 30-40 years younger than his now-98 years of age.  Some have stated that he might be near the end of his life several times. But just as the prophet has proven the world wrong in the January 2018 assessment that he was unlikely to change the Church, he continues to live and function well daily. 

Of course, as any good former physician would do, he followed the advice of his doctors and was seated to deliver his remarks during the October 2022 General Conference. But his being seated did not in any way diminish the impact of his prophetic counsel. At the beginning of this month, in our ward's Fast and Testimony Meeting, many ward members shared admiration for President Nelson.

I was inspired to stand up and share my admiration for him, along with attesting to the fact that, as promised in the oath and covenant of the priesthood, President Nelson has been "sanctified by the Spirit unto the renewal of [his body[." In just over a year, President Nelson and his counselors will join the list of longest-serving First Presidencies of the Church.

The last five years of inspired leadership from and through President Nelson has taught me so much. A long time ago, I began regularly praying that when any major Church announcement is made, I would know for myself that it has been inspired by the Lord. And the Lord has never disappointed me in that. Many of the adjustments and changes that have been made have always left me with the question, "Why hasn't this been done before?"

I am grateful for the opportunity I have almost daily to witness what is going on in the Church around the world because of our current beloved prophet, President Russell M. Nelson. He is truly the ma for our time. As we heed his prophetic counsel and seek to obtain confirmation from the Lord regarding it, I promise He will continue to testify to all of us that He does indeed direct His work, through His chosen prophet, seer, and revelatory and President of the Church in our day, President Russell M. Nelson.

I am grateful to have had the chance to reflect on the impact the prophet has had on the Church in the last 6 years. I continue to monitor all major Church news updates and will be sure to bring word of those to you all as I become aware thereof. In the meantime, that does it for now. BREAKING TEMPLE NEWS: Church Confirms Location and Preliminary Information for the Bercelona Spain Temple

Hello again, everyone! True to form, on this Monday at this 2:00 PM hour in Utah, the First Presidency has made the first major temple announcement of 2023. The location and preliminary details have been provided for the Barcelona Spain Temple, which, as we know, was originally announced in April of last year. Here are the details: 

A 5.4-acre site at the intersection of Avinguda de la Vía Augusta and Avinguda de la Clota, Sant Cugat del Vallès in Barcelona will serve as the location of the two-story 27,500 square foot temple, along with a 13,600 square foot ancillary building, which will include arrival and distribution centers and patron housing. 

This now brings the total number of temples with sites announced to 25, most (if not all) of which will likely have groundbreakings this year. To be perfectly honest, I was hoping we might get an announcement on opening arrangements for either the Bentonville Arkansas or Okinawa Japan Temples, if not for both of them. But I'm not in any way disappointed by this news. 

With 2 temples originally announced in April 2018, 1 each the following October and April, 3 from April 2020, 5 and 8 from April and October of 2021, respectively, and 6 and 14 respectively from April and October of last year (still weird to say that at this point), the Church has not yet announced any information on 40 of the 68 announced temples.

What does that mean for the future? Well, bearing in mind that there are 8 temples in the queue that might have opening arrangements announced in the next 4-6 months or so, and 25 temples with sites announced (with exterior renderings released for 11 of those), we are unlikely to be short on temple announcements. 

I seem to recall that, during the pandemic, since the Church could not hold General Conference leadership meetings as usual in 2020, over the course of two days, two significant announcements were made relating to temple construction instead. 

So I have a theory that, while Monday could be a day for some major updates like site announcements or exterior renderings, maybe Thursday, which has been a standard day for other major Church announcements, or another day of the week could be used to announce other major temple news. 

Since President Nelson said a couple of years ago that things were going to move forward at an accelerated pace, it would make sense that, to keep up with a rapidly-progressing queue, some weeks going forward may include 2 temple-related announcements.For my part, I will continue to monitor all such updates and will do my best to bring you word of those (along with any Church news updates) to the best of my ability.

2022 Year-End Review of Developments Covered On This Blog

 Hello again, everyone! Although the Newsroom and the Church News have already provided multiple reports to cap off the year, and although more of those have come through today, I would be remiss as we close out the year if I did not look back myself at the major highlights covered on this blog this year. Either this year or last year, someone in the comments of this blog said that the content I provide was comparable to "the Church News on steroids". While I don't know if that's an accurate assessment of my work, there has been a lot going on this year. Let's take a look back at key highlights from 2022.

Temple updates, as noted in my last post, were outstanding and significant. Numerous reports covered the day-to-day ministry of our apostles and General Officers of the Church, including birthday tributes to the apostles and female general officers. Breaking news often came down the pike, not all of which was related to temple construction. I hit the outstanding milestone of 2,200 posts earlier this year. And of course, there were the unique projects and milestones of which I took note.

So many of the major announcements were developments I wasn't necessarily anticipating. But with the Church finding ways to hasten temple construction, and with the ongoing ministry of general leaders, updates were never in short supply. And I continued my personal tradition of praying in advance of every maojr announcement. As those developments were reported, I felt they were exactl;y what the Church needed for this period of time.

In the midst of global disasters, the Church stepped up in big ways to help in any way possible. Numerous Church leaders met with dignitaries and major representatives of governments around the world. The Church expanded its' golobal reach, and missionaries continued to find innovative ways to expand their reach as well. If there is one hting I hope my readers take away from coverage of these developments here in 2022, I hope it is that the Lord is very much at the helm of His work, that prophets and apostles continue to provide inspired direction, and that all is well in the Lord's kingdom here on Earth because of that.

And so, as I close out this look back, I also want to look ahead to the future. As I mentioned in my last post, I will not be shocked if 2023 is another big year for temple developments. The Church is on track to dedicate 20-30 temples in 2023 alone, and around the same number of groundbreakings appear to be anticiapted. I also expect the Church will announce a minimum of 35 temples again this year.

As far as content unique to this blog, I have complied a list of anticipated projects for the upcoming year. And the day-to-day updates from the Church News, the Newsroom, the Church Temples site, and the Church Growth Blog will also be shared here as time and circumsstances allow. 2022 has also been a big year for feedback from all of you, my readers, in the way of corrections, clarifications, or additional observations.

I could not do what I do here to the extent that I do it were it not for the extensive intinerest and support provided by those of you who follow along here, who often share feedback and thoughts, and who continue to encourage me in those ongoing updates. So as we look back at 2022 and ahead to 2023, "thank you" seems woefully inadequate, but it will have to do.

For my part, I continue to monitor all Church news and temple construction updates and will be sure to pawss word of the latest developments to you all here as time and circumstancs allow going forward. In the meantime, that does it for now.

Initial Predictions for the April 2023 General Conference:, Part Two: Changes in General Church Leadership, Statistical Report 2022, and Potential Locations in Which a Temple Could Be Announced

Hello again, everyone! I am back as promised with a look at the initial version of my predictions for the April 2023 General Conference. This post will discuss the potential changes in general Church leadership, the estimated numbers for the Statistical Report 2022, and the potential locations in which the Church could announce new temples. So let's get right into it:

As I mentioned in my last post, any changes in the Presidency of the Seventy that would be effective in August 2023 are likely to be sustained in advance. And April has traditionally been the General Conference each year in which new General Authority Seventies and Area Seventies are sustained.  As I also mentioned in my previous post, I anticipate that the Church will release the current Young Women General Presidency and announce a new one, effective August 1. 

If the new Young Women General President is a current counselor in the Primary or Relief Society General Presidency, the subsequent changes will be sustained in advance. There may be changes to the Sunday School or Young Men General Presidency if any members are sustained as GA Seventies. I can't and won't give any more specific predictions there.

So we now turn to the statistical report. All numbers are essentially fairly speculative, with the numbers for the total stakes, districts, wards, and branches based on a guesstimate from the Church Temple site's statistical page and from Fuller Consideration. Aside from the total number of temples, the estimates for other elements typically found in the statistical report are based on complex algorithms that are difficult to describe.

So we now turn to the temple list. I was able to find at least a few new prospects, but most of them are carried over from my corresponding predictions for new temples from October of this year. I have also taken the liberty of adding a general note about which major metropolitan areas might be the next ones to have multiple temples announced simultaneously.  

While it is possible that any such announcements could relate to regions in the United States, it seems more likely that, at least initially, the Church will focus on those regions found outside the US. I also think that, because the Church will dedicate four temples here in Utah next year (Layton, Orem, Taylorsville, and Red Cliffs), and since all other new Utah temples are now under construction, the Church could and potentially will announce one or two temples in Utah this go-round. 

As we also know, the last new Utah temple was announced in October 2021, and there are several locations within both the Utah area and the state of Utah where new temples would make sense. So although there was a precedent set this year for no Utah temples to e announced, I think we can safely assume that at least one but possibly two new Utah temples are imminently likely.

Since President Nelson is reportedly hoping to announce a minimum of 35 temples per year every year for the time being, I think we could see anywhere between 15-20 new temples being announced in the upcoming General Conference. Whatever may happen in terms of that conference, I will be sure to pass anything along once I hear about it. 

It probably goes without saying, but I will, of course, update these predictions once the details of the Saturday Evening Session are outlined. Having said all of that, the commenting period for these predictions is now officially open and will remain open until Thursday March 30 of next year (just over 3 months from now) at 10:00 PM, which will give me 36 hours to make any final adjustments to these predictions if needed.

Initial Predictions for the April 2023 General Conference, Part One: Speaker Lineup Predictions

 Hello again, everyone! With just a few days of 2022 remaining, I do plan to provide my traditional year-end temple construction progress review and a look back at major developments covered there this year, and a look ahead to those projects I have planned for next year. But in the interim, I wanted to provide my initial predictions for the April 2023 General Conference. 

Since we likely won't get an announcement on the plans for the Saturday Evening Session until February, the predictions for the potential speaker lineup includes a projection that the third session of General Conference will be another general one for all members and friends of the Church. I have also allowed for the possibility that President Nelson could either be the first or last speaker in the first session. 

Additionally, it's worth noting that the Church has continued to ask more of the female General Officers of the Church to speak. The two counselors in the Relief Society General Presidency spoke in October, meaning that Sister Camille N. Johnson might be the only one from that presidency to speak this time around. 

Sister Tracy Y. Browing spoke in October, and Amy A. Wright spoke six months earlier alongside Sister Susan B. Porter when Sisters Porter and Wright were serving as counselors to Sister Johnson. It seems more likely to me that Sister Porter will again speak this time around since she has not spoken since her call as Primary General President. 

So if one member apiece speaks from the Primary and Relief Society General Presidencies, it is more likely that two representatives from the Young Women General Presidency will speak this time around. That is especially true since the current Young Women General Presidency are anticipated to be released in the upcoming General Conference. 

So because Sister Michelle D. Craig spoke during the October 2022 General Conference, I think the other two outgoing members of the Young Women General Presidency will speak. I also believe that, since the Young Men General President spoke in October and the Sunday School General President spoke in April of this year, that the First Counselor in the Sunday School General Presidency, Brother Milton Camargo, will represent the male General Officers.

It's also worth noting that in the April General Conferences of 2021 and 2022, there were no speakers from the Presiding Bishopric. While that trend could continue, I have felt impressed that Bishop W. Christopher Waddell might speak this go-round, and if he does, he is likely to do so in the final session of General Conference. 

As far as the Presidency of the Seventy is concerned, regarding the current 7 members, Elder Carl B. Cook was the one who spoke least recently (he did so in April 2019). Due to subsequent changes to the Presidency of the Seventy, the next least-recent speaker was Elder Carlos A. Godoy, who spoke in October 2020. So I see three possible scenarios for the Presidency of the Seventy: 

First, it is possible that changes that will take effect in August of 2023 in conjunction with area leadership changes may be presented in advance for a sustaining vote. If that happens, one of the incoming members could speak. If no changes are presented, either Elder Cook could speak this time around, or the Church could skip the Presidency of the Seventy until October 2023. 

It's also worth noting that, with the exception of Elder David S. Baxter (who is still reportedly on medical leave from his Church assignments and who last spoke in April of 2012), all of the General Authority Seventies who last spoke in the 5 General Conferences before the one in October 2015 have spoken again recently. 

So, as reflected in my predictions for General Authority Seventies who will speak this time around, I have the 3 remaining GA Seventies who last spoke in October 2015, the 1 remaining who last spoke in April 2016, and the 7 who last spoke in October 2016. 

The only other element of the speaker lineup I haven't mentioned relates to my predictions for the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. I am assuming that, barring anything unexpected, President Nelson will speak 3 times, President Oaks will do so twice (when taking the Sustaining of General Authorities, Area Seventies, and General OFficers into account) and President Eyring will speak once.

And for the members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, this document may illustrate how I came to the conclusion of which Quorum members would speak in each session. BREAKING NEWS: Church Releases New Recommendations for YSA Wards and Stakes

Hello again, everyone! A short time ago, the Church News shared an article outlining revised recommendations for young single adult congregations. Those changes were announced by an official notice from the Priesthood and Family Department. These changes are being made in response to counsel given by Church President Russell M. Nelson to Young Single Adults in a Worldwide Devotional held last May 

So what are these changes? While married Brethren will continue to serve as bishops and stake presidents of YSA wards and stakes, all other adult married couples supporting YSA wards and stakes should be honorably released ASAP. Stake presidents and bishops will call YSA men to serve as their counselors, and the high council of each YSA stake should be made up of YSA members. That also extends to the stake officers serving in the Relief Society and Sunday School presidencies.

The Church is also requesting that, in non-YSA stakes, YSA committees should be formed, with a YSA man and woman called as co-chairs of that committee. If there are insufficient YSA numbers in non-YSA stakes, neighboring stakes may join to form that council. Stake leaders are encouraged to use stake budgets to create "gathering places" for YSAs.

In his address in May, President Nelson made it clear that the Lord trusts the Young Single Adults of the Church, and these adjustments reflect that. I am pleased to have been able to share this update with you all. I continue to monitor all temple updates and Church news reports and will be sure to bring word of those to you as I become aware of such updates. In the meantime, that does it for now.

UPDATED: Current Apostolic Data

Hello again, everyone! It has been a tradition on this blog for me to provide updates on apostolic data every 7 weeks. Having last done so on Sunday, September 4, it is time to publish the newest such data. As with every two-part update, the first part contains updated data about the age and tenure length records for all 17 Church Presidents, in addition to updated information on the tenure length records for each of the 28 Presidents of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

The first document likewise notes information on the tenure length rankings for three sets of apostolic groups: the longest-serving First Presidencies (which will not be updated with the current First Presidency until 2024), in addition to the longest-serving groups of members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, and groups of all ordained apostles (the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles), in addition to when each of those current groups will move up on the list.

Meanwhile, the second part of today's update shows the long-form and decimal ages for the members of the current First Presidency, Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, and the apostolic groups overall, in addition to the average ages of each group and apostolic nonagenarians (with 3 of the current 15 apostles being on that list, and th>
